MY TANK IS ALIVE! by ARMANDO CEJA
Experience Level: Intermediate
Posted on 10/3/2009 from Encino, CA
Comments: The Current USA Nova Extreme Pro T5HO 10k/460nm Actinics is the best fixture for the price(shop around)... I upgraded to the 6x 54watt. 48' fixture... I had been running a jbj 36' 96w x2 pc for 3 yrs now, (the fans were noisy and the light was somewhat faded) .. this new fixture is bright, and it lights up my tank like its a Christmas parade! LOL. It looks amazing. WOW! My fish love it and my corals look amazing with the 10k's. The 460n actinics give my corals a bright splash of color... unbelievable. The fans are surprisingly whisper quiet, they sound like they are not running at all. The dual high quality fans is a major reason why i love this fixture, using t5's eliminates a lot of the heat that u get with halides and PC lighting. I Love T5 HO technology.. added a dual timer for 10k/actinics and im set. The mounting legs the are provided are made of thin plastic, I highly recommend suspending the fixture from ceiling or upgrading to a rear mounting arm support. final thought: Better Than PC and Comparable with Halides. U cant go wrong! :)
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I bought it to replace my power compacts based on the feedback from several member's on a fish forum opinion and expierence. First let me tell people considering buying from Petstore.com that their communication with me from purchase to receiving them was OUTSTANDING, received my lights in three working days from purchase date even after being informed they were back ordered. Easy to set up and WOW, talk about bright!!! Fans run silently and cool. I would highly recommend them and Petstore.com to anyone considering purchasing.....

Comments: Using on a 90g "softy reef" tank, fish and corals love it. Added a R2 double moonlight kit (easy to do) it made the lighting complete. Also used the hanger kit for the light fixture, that makes for very easy access to the tank and is almost a must have.

Plenty of light by SHAWN

Posted on 7/6/2009 from EAU CLAIRE, WI UNITED STATES
Comments: This fixture has a lot of light but after about 3 weeks having it running the 10k bulbls started burning out. After losing 5 bulbs I RMA'd the light because of bad electronic ballasts. I have the new replacement fixure running now and haven't had any problems yet. I still gave the light a 4 out of 5 because the I like the other features of the light. It is very sturdy and easy enough for one person to move. It doesn't produce to much heat and it has plenty of vents and fans to keep it cool. Provided I don't have any ballast issues with the new light I would recommend this fixture to others. After some research the ballast issue is not limited to just this fixture or Current USA but other electronic ballast lamps as well.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

72" Model by PHILIP FORTMAN

Posted on 7/2/2009 from DAVIE, FL UNITED STATES
Comments: First I must state I am very happy with the 72” Current USA Nova Extreme Pro T5 HO Fixture purchased at the end of June 2009. It is currently installed over a new 180 gal setup, but I wish the web page tech info made it clear that the model used double sets (10 in all) of 36” tubes and not the (hard to find) 72” tubes. The tubes are uninstalled and arrived without breakage due to excellent packing by the shipper. New users should be instructed to alternate the rows: 1 actinic blue then 1 white when inserting tubes. This enables the “Independent controls for dawn/dusk applications” feature so just the blue starts in the morning, then in an hour or so the white are added for mid-day, then off for the blue dusk at the end of day.

Broke after 3 Weeks by Ryan

Posted on 3/20/2009 from ROSWELL, GA UNITED STATES
Comments: Lighting worked perfectly for about 3 weeks. I came home one day to find 2 of the lights not functioning. I switched the bulbs around and got some of them to work, but then other lights would not turn on. I've read several reviews that have also had this problem. On the positive side, when the light is working, it puts out a great amount of light and is whisper quiet to run the fans.

Comments: Overall this is a good quality light - very bright and consistent lighting across my 125 gallon tank. Only drawback of the light are the flimsy dock mounts provided by Current (they may be fine for shorter fixtures, but are too light weight for the 6 foot light) - I would strongly recommend buying the hanging kit for the 72" model.

Comments: Don't know what happened , worked like it should for about a month. I came home one day to find it out , no lights on. Messed with bulb configuration and I got some (half) of them to work . Moonlights still work but the T5 bulbs are still an issue. I'm going to request new bulbs for the system , I'm wondering if the ballast is strong enough to run the lights. At this time I would not consider buying this product. I will update my review on a later date.

DO NOT BUY THIS LIGHT by ADAM PETROVSKY

Posted on 12/3/2008 from LAVEEN, AZ UNITED STATES
Comments: Had the light for about a week (seemed nice at first). Bulbs started to not light properly when turned off to on. Had to remove panel and jiggle the lights to get them to go back on. Eventually a full bank didn't work at all. Also, the legs which hold the fixture in place buckled on one side and bent/broke out of the light. Replaced this with the Sun system.

Comments: After being a halide freak for years, I was a little nervous about making the switch to T5's. However, this fixture makes it very easy at a very reasonable price. the stock bulbs started changing corals colors in a great way! The fact that the fixture comes with legs and a splash shield is another big plus. I was a bit weary about the legs at first and how they slide into the fixture. I was afraid they would want to slide out too easily, making the light easy to fall into the tank. My fears were gone when the legs slid in with a descent amount of resistance and really can't move unless you use a bit of force. Can't wait to see the electric bills now!

Posted on 11/12/2008 from DELRAY BEACH, FL UNITED STATES
Comments: This lighting fixture does great for my 125 reef. The colors pop from my corals and my fish. The fan is quiet and it runs cooler than my former lighting system. The only bad thing I have found about this unit are the legs. They are flimsy for the weight and size of this fixture. One of the sets of legs has already popped out of the track and I have had to prop the fixture using a little ingenuity, otherwise I love it. For the price you get a huge lighting difference.

So far so good by DAVID ZIMBRICK

Posted on 11/9/2008 from GRANDVIEW, MO UNITED STATES
Comments: Had this a week now and so far I love it. Construction is first rate, the fixture itself is rugged and attractive, and my corals are responding nicely after just a few days. The color rendering of the t-5's is very nice and I am experiencing my tank in a very new way! I wish they would have offered the 6 bulb fixture with moonlights but no big deal. The cooling fans are about as quiet as can be expected (the fan motors themselves offer virtually no noise) but the wind noise itself is still audible though not unbearable. I would expect this is unavoidable with any fixture. Still it is quieter than the PC's I was previously running and is perfectly acceptable. I agree with some of the other reviews in that the reflector seems to be where they have economized the fixture but I don't see that this necessarily has any significant impact on performance. There is more than enough high quality light making its way into the tank. Packing was first rate but one bulb arrived completely shattered. They shipped out a replacement for free the same day. This is my second order from here and I won't hesitate to continue shopping again.
Yes, I would recommend this product to my friends.

Excelent Light by ADRIANA LIMON

Posted on 11/3/2008 from LAREDO, TX UNITED STATES
Comments: Pros. This light is more than excellent for a coral reef and invertebrates with astonishing 324 watts which is a little bit more than the 5 watt per gallon recommended lightning in the case of a 55 gallon aquarium. Cons.: It heats up the aquarium if you use the included supports consider buying also the cable to hang it and give the lamp more space between your aquarium and lamp. Conclusion: This lamp s good enough to light a 55 gallon tank and i wouldn't doubt a 70 or a 100 gallon aquarium. Its my first high wattage lamp and wow it really bring up life in your aquarium.

Posted on 9/25/2008 from WEST HENRIETTA, NY UNITED STAT
Comments: The product is a bit below what I expected from Current USA. The legs that keep this thing on top of the aquarium are flimsy plastic and make the unit unstable. The unit also has a single reflector for each side bent around each bulb as opposed to individual reflectors for each bulb. Also the unit is held together with 2 aluminum brackets that obstruct the output of the unit. The actinics that come with the product are baby blue in color and should be replaced if you consider purchasing the product. I would definately consider a fixture by Aquactinics, which is a bit more pricey but is built to a higher standard.
I would not recommend this product to my friends.

Comments: I am quite pleased with the product. I have a standard 75g tank my old lighting was 6 65w pc bulbs. The nova fixture is much brighter. My dog lays on the couch 10ft away from the tank at night and glows. The heat dispersement is excellant the top of the fixture is almost cool to the touch with all six bulbs burning. My old units felt like a hot furnace. In the week i have used the fixture I have seen improvement in most of my corals especially my polyps and xenia. My galaxia corals sparkle as they did under halides at my local retailer. I feel I have enough light now to attempt most anything. I will eventually move the fixture lower to the tank surface once my corals are acclimated to the new light. In hopes that my dog will no longer look like an alian from the glow.I'm currently using the legs that came with the fixture which work quite well.I may switch the bulbs around and add another actinic to achieve a somewhat bluer look. That I have seen at my local retailer who uses a four bulb fixture and keeps most any corals under them.

Comments: This light is simply fantastic. The only downside being that the reflectors are not true individuals, it is a contoured sheet that gives some of those benefits. Even so, the PAR levels are impressive at anything less than a 20" tank height. This light has no problem keeping my corals - LPS and SPS alike.

Comments: I bought this unit to replace a PC fixture. The difference is amazing! My corals opened up almost immediatly and my tank was illuminated brilliantly! This is my first T5 fixture and I like it as much as MH lighting. The legs are adjustable which made it easy to fit on a slightly smaller than 36inch tank. The unit runs very cool, ne need to worry about temp spikes!

Strong, cool light - noisy by Lance

Comments: I'm enjoying my new Nova Extreme Pro 72" light on my 150gal tank with two exceptions. When the unit arrived, two bulbs were broken and I had to replace them ($30 each) and the fan is a little louder than I had hoped. However, the light is very strong, the color in my tank is exciting again. I'm surprised at how cool the hood and water are. My aquarium is down in a cool basement and I don't need a chiller.

Comments: Theses aren't much different than the regular Nova Extreme fixtures. They do not have true individual reflectors like they advertise, they are a slight improvement but no where near the quality of any other individual reflector on the market. The price is very good and the fans run quiet, but don't expect too much.

Comments: This unit illuminates my 46 gal euro tank very well. The only problem with it is the poor quality. I have had the unit for approximately 2 months and one of the actinic bulbs has already burnt out and I had to send it in for replacement. Another problem that I have had with it is that the leg broke and now the unit sits crooked on my tank. Marine depot had no problem with sending me a replacement bulb for free. I have yet to contact them about the broken leg but I assume they will replace it for me. It just seems to me for being such an expensive fixture that it would be better.

Comments: I purchased this light to replace my aqualight deluxe 2-65watt power compact on my 37 gallon. The difference is like night and day. It's a little long for my tank (30" wide) but the leg positioning is adjustable. My tank is 22" deep and with the reflectors Im positive the light is penetrating to the bottom. My tank is so much brighter than before. It also runs cooler than the aqualight. I'll soon be upgrading to a 46 gal bow and this light will be excellent for that too.

Comments: I have the 8 bulb version of this light without the individual reflectors, and this light completely outshines it! I use it on my 90 gallon and it's more than enough light for the tank. I'm happy with both of my Current USA T5 lights, but this one is the best! The only downside is that I'm trying to use it in an all-glass canopy and it's not well designed for that. I'm not able to cool the light very well (not necessarially the light's fault) and may have to cut vent holes into the canopy.

Comments: Well, I've had the new 48" 6 bulb Current Nova Extreme Pro for a couple of weeks now. I like the fixture a lot. It has two fans in the end plus vent slots in the top. Cooling of the fixture is not an issue. The TEK has no fans and is only slotted. Included with the fixture are the docking mounts (legs) as well as a full length acrylic splash shield. Both are optional items with both the TEK and Aquatinics fixtures. Six bulbs are included with the fixture. Three each of 10,000k and actinics. I like the looks of the tank with this light. The other brands are fixture only. Bulbs aren't horribly expensive, I may play with some different combinations as time goes on to see if I like the looks of others better. The unit has two on/off switches on the fan end. One turns on two actinics and a fan, the other controls the other blue plus the whites and the other fan. A good setup IMO for dusk to dawn light timing. It does not have the LED's built in that my Current PC fixture had, but that is more fluff than anything anyhow. The individual reflectors on this unit are what some may see as the weakest point in this fixture. Instead of having six independent and "individual" reflectors, Current USA has taken a different approach. The reflectors are formed from a single sheet of reflective material: starting at one edge and then bent/formed around each bulb. The reflectors are not curved or parabolic around each bulb, but rather angled (picture cutting a stop sign in half) to achieve the "individual" reflectors. The reflector material used appears to be of high quality, it is very reflective. So I can't say if this is a bad thing or not, I don't have experience with any other brand fixtures to use as a benchmark. All things considered, I think there is a lot of value in this fixture from a results to cost ratio. I am very pleased with it thus far and wouldn't hesitate recommending it to someone.

Comments: I bought this to replace my 36" 2 X 96W Orbit PC fixture and the switch is dramatic. even though there is only a 42W difference the visual difference is far more than that. I don't have meters to test these but it is a dramatic difference to the eye. the reflector looks like one reflector with bends around each bulb but it does the trick. I just have the bulbs that came with the unit right now. I may try to switch out bulbs later. this is a great unit for the price.
