I don't normally write reviews, but I spent a lot of time trying to figure out which sand to buy. I thought my review might help. I bought several different types of sand to compare. After careful consideration, Fiji pink was the sand I chose. It normally comes in "live sand" form. Meaning it's packed in a bag with saltwater. This bag was not advertised as live but it did arrive fairly moist. I did not have to rinse it. It looked dark in the bag but once it was in my tank it was almost white, with a SLIGHT pinkish hint to it in some areas. The grain size is perfect, not too big and not too small.

I specifically picked this product for its grain size after doing extensive research. It turns out that studies have found little difference between the nitrate processing capacities of different depths and types of sandbeds. The main difference these studies found was the ability of the sandbed to "buffer" against phosphates. It was found that tanks with small (without being too small) grain size sandbeds have lower phosphates. I found this product while looking for appropriately sized sand. I really like the color. I was hoping it wouldn't be too pink. Thankfully it's more of a white color that looks very natural but glows a nice pinkish orange hue under metal halide lighting.

The grains are uniformly shaped with no larger pieces of shell or rubble, so the picture is a bit deceptive. If you need more rubble/shells so critters can tunnel or close up entrances to caves, this might not be the best choice. I'll definitely need to seed this with live sand that contains more rubble. I haven't seen what it looks like in the tank under lights yet, but the color isn't pink at all in the bag.
