This is our third pump of the same model in three years. While it is advertised that it functions equally well in or out of water, I do not suggest you use it out of the water. The plastic pump body will heat up under normal use and warp inside, jamming the impeller and causing the internal thermal overload to trigger, shutting the pump off again and again. It was only by submerging the pump that we were able to obtain any type of long-time use from this pump, using the water surrounding the pump as a coolant. I consider it a poor design.
