Thus, a single filtration system can be used as a mechanical, biological, or chemical filter, depending on the media used.

If the biggest problem in your aquarium is ammonia, it makes sense to use a filter media specifically targeting ammonia. Take note that ammonia in high levels is toxic to fish and corals, so it's important to remove it - or at least, keep it minimal - in your tanks.
