Algae Free Piranha Float Algae Magnet Information

New and Revolutionary Cleaning Magnets! These are the strongest floating aquarium algae cleaning magnets available that are safe for glass and acrylic aquariums.  The inner cleaning assembly is made of high quality injected molded durable ABS plastic, which, when disengaged from the outer assemby, floats to the top of your aquarium.

Benefits of a "floating" inner cleaning assembly:
  • Enables vigorous algae scrubbing without worry of detachment and having to dig the cleaner off the bottom of your aquarium, scaring your fish, damaging the aquatic environment, and ultimately getting all wet.
  • Strong, impenetrable injected molded durable ABS plastic inner magnetic housing is fresh and saltwater safe and will not corrode or rust. Therefore, you can leave it in your aquarium all the time.
  • When substrate, gravel etc. get caught in the cleaning pad of aquarium algae cleaning magnets (which does occur from time to time) you can just disengage the inner assembly and it will float to the top so you can clean off the scrubbing pad. No more scratches.
  • Lighter inner cleaning assembly makes for a stronger magnetic attraction, better cleaning ability and easy maneuverability around corners.
  • No more strings to get tangled.
Qualities of our floating aquarium algae magnets:
  • New larger cleaning area (4" x 2") for faster cleaning of aquarium walls.
  • New even stronger "rare earth magnets" for super cleaning power.
  • Outer magnetic assembly made out of solid oak, cut and professionally finished with a golden oak finish.
  • True cleaning strength!
  • Replaceable natural felt pads on outer assembly are glass and acrylic safe -- no need for separate pads.
  • Medical grade Velcro glass scrubbing pad and acrylic safe pad holder that is non-toxic and aquaria safe.
  • Replaceable inner scrubbing pads for superior product life.
Piranha Float:
  • Aquarium Thickness: glass = 1/4" & 3/8"; acrylic = 3/16" & 1/4"
  • Aquarium Size: 30-125 gal
2-year warranty from date of purchase.

Comments: This is a good product for removing light algae.But it's not what I expected.The reviews I read stated that it could remove coraline algae from an acrylic tank. Not so. So it's back to scrapping & alot of elbow grease.

Comments: Tiger Shark algae scraper:I have a beautiful 180 gal. freshwater aquarum with tons of healthy plants. I use this scraper on the toughest remnant of horsehair algae that my brilliant sturiosoma cats can't dig off the glass. With a lot of muscle {I am a muscular guy} I finally removed the crap off the front glass.I purposely chose the biggest size available - and it turned out to be a good choice.If you work hard at this, it works.

Comments: I have a 30 gallon and the "Extra Strong" Nano Magnet I had purchased just wasn't cutting it in my opinion. Even more problematic was if I moved to quickly, the inside portion would become detached and sink to the bottom of the tank.
<br />
<br />I decided to choose the hammerhead version, since I'm eventuall planning to upgrade to a 70 gallon, and I couldn't be more pleased. It's not even fair to compare the two because this thing is very, very strong! It takes one pass to clean any film algae and I really like that the inner portion floats. I don't see this thing becoming detached, but if it does for some reason, it will float to the top making recovery convenient!
<br />
<br />The float comes with the inner and outer pieces, and even comes with replacement pads for both sides. It also includes a pad made for acrylic, so make sure you have the right inner cleaning pad on your magnet if you have an acrylic tank.
<br />
<br />I really like the wood finish for the outer portion. It is clean and attractive design and instead of having a piece of plastic stuck to your tank, it is an organic well finished piece of wood. It just works.
<br />
<br />I kinow this is expensive; however, if you are looking for something that is an attractive option that really works, you won't be disappointed. More importantly, you won't have to spend anymore money on another type or model. Although I wouldn't hesitate to purchase this again, it would be nice if the price was a little more affordable, otherwise, it's perfect!

Comments: I purchased one of the Algae Free Algae Magnets to replace a Mag Float on my 120 gallon mixed reef tank. This magnet is intensely strong and solidly built. It gets rid of nuisance algae on the glass very easily and holds its bond even in very high flow.
<br />
<br />The look of the units exterior is very sleek and contributes to the look of my tank. Instead of having a bulky white magfloat as an eyesore I know have a very attractive wooden exterior.
<br />
<br />This is the best algae magnet I have yet to use! Awesome product!

"Great, but..." - Product Review by Jeffrey Blum (Posted on 1/8/12)

Comments: I bought the Tiger Shark magnet for my 36" deep bowfront acrylic tank. It is the only magnet that has helped clean my tank, I've tried 2-3 others that wouldn't do anything. But... I bought the magnet hoping it would remove coraline algae near the bottom of the tank that I can't reach by hand. It doesn't. I believe the curve of the tank is such that is makes the effective thichness too high. So I am returning the Tiger Shark and will be ordering the Great White instead. This is a great magnet for Acrylic Tanks, I just ordered the wrong size.

Comments: Hands down the best magnet I have ever used. Actually makes tank maintenance fun an not a chore. I have a six foot wide tank and had a mag float before. It kept coming off when I went fast so I had to chase it around my tank. This one sticks ten times better and doesn't come off very easy. Good job on this design.

Comments: In today's massive selection of aquarium maintenance products there is a lot of junk offered the newbie hobbyist. Not so regarding this product! This magnet unit is what all the rest aim to be IMHO. It feels 'right' in the hand, moves smoothly over the glass and clears the inside while polishing the outside of the glass. The 'hold' is excellent and you will not be looking around the surface for the separated end every time you go too fast for the magnetic attachment.
<br /> These magnets ( I have the pirahana and the bigger hammerhead) represent value and give me the impression of being created by and for serious hobbyists.
<br /> My only question-- does anyone want to buy my magnets from the other manufactures? I won't be needing them any more. :) JR

Comments: Usually have used a magfloat in the past, and this is better. I bought the Tiger Shark which is one up from the one I could have bought for my 180. Wanted something strong, and it is! Cleans very well, even the tough stuff if you've neglected to clean for a few days. I like the cloth pad on the outside, it does a great job cleaning the glass on viewing side of the tank. Attractive looking as well, the wood is a nice touch.

Comments: I have 1" acrylic. The magnet cleans very well and is very strong. Only problem is that it does not float. It is very heavy (as expected) and may fall on delicate corals if you are not careful while trying to remove it from tank. Overall good product.

Comments: This item definitely helps in the cleaning, remember to carefully place magnets together in tank because of thier strength,
<br />Most important keep cleaning magnet far enough above the sandbed and never get sand in it because you can easily scratch a acrylic or glass tank.

Comments: I decided to put some money into a 'better' algae scraper when my old MagFloat stopped doing the job. It looked nice in the catalog and came with replacement pads, so I decided to buy it. What a pleasant surprise! It worked better than I expected, particularly on the round corners of my acrylic aquarium. It's a tough magnet so it hangs in there and the replaceable pad is easy to clean and very, very effective.

Comments: I was hesitant to spend $89.00 on any magnet. This one is great!
<br />The in water part is a little smaller than the outside and that makes getting the corners really easy. It is an extremely strong magnet so. if your tank has thicker glass it will be good. If your tank has glass less than 1/2" get a smaller version.
<br />really good deal and it really works. I recommend this product.

Comments: Great product - The wife was always telling me when the 150 Gal tank built into the wall of our family room was getting alge on the glass. I was always the one doing the cleaning beings i had to get a stool & acess the tank from behind and reach deep into the tank to get all the algae buildup. Now we can both clean it without a stool or even getting our hands wet.

Comments: They should make it with the acrylic safe pad made into the magnet. Instead the pad is shipped with the magnet and you have to sandwich it between the magnets and it looks cheap. The acrylic safe pad is about 1/4" thick so you loose some magnetism. All in all it's still a great product.

Comments: I now have 2 from this company, this and the Great White. I have a 500 gallon and thought I needed the Great White. It worked, just too well. I did not want to order the smaller one right away so I used it for about a year. Recently ordered this one. Of course, easier to move around. Just make sure you know the thickness of the glass before you order because these things are incredibly strong.

Gets ALL the green algae quickly and easily. Yes, it leaves some of the small brown algae spots, but it still reduces the time and affort to keep the tank clean by about 90%

Comments: Nice product - I'm happy to be upgrading from a cheaper algae cleaner, however - the scraper attachment - why couldn't they have made studs to screw on to the floating magnet part that goes into the tank. I just don't feel the super glue is a good solution - it may work, but really - super glue.

Comments: I have read other reviews on this product on this site and like others I started with the negative. I have a glass tank that is 125 gallons. I have been a user and purchaser of MAG-Float for some time now. My kids used to go up to the tank and take off the mag float and I would have to reattach the magnets as it went floating around the tank. This magnet is super strong to the point where the kids are not able to take it off. It does a fantastic job of getting the glass clean. You still have to scrape off coraline algea if you let it go that long. Use this magnet once every 2 days or so and the glass stays looking nice and clear. I wish I had purchased this years ago.

Comments: This cleaning magnet was a little expensive, but it is worth the money! It does an excellent job and is well constructed. The magnets are very strong...CAUTION!!! Please read the instructions to avoid any possible damage.
<br />They recommend placing both halves against the glass 6 inches apart and sliding them together. After seeing how strong the magnets are, I see why! Just a piece of advice, do not put the magnets together outside your tank. I tried this and had to pry them apart with a flatbar. Good product!!!

Comments: The Hammerhead is a powerful magnet but a little overrated at 3/8" to 1/2" for an acrylic tank. I would say it is better rated for a 1/4" acrylic tank. As said above it is powerful but not what I had expected it to be only slightly more powerful than a large Mag Float. Considering what I have said I would rather had bought a bigger one .

Comments: I really like this product. We have a 250 gallon tank and there are some spots we just can't get with the scrapers and such. It arrived last week. We had a similar and less expensive one made in Europe and only one week into it, the pads wore out. The cost of the replacements was half as much as the product, so we looked elsewhere. This one came with a replacement pad. The tank was immaculate in just a few minutes and I didn't even get wet! Follow instructions to avoid scratching acrylic, even though it says "acrylic safe". That only applies if you follow the directions.

Comments: OK, so I've only used it for one week so far but I'm very impressed. I've used two other mag cleaners (one that floats and one that a certain pump company makes that does not float) and I can say this one really shines. My old floatmag came apart at least 3 or 4 times each time I used it and I had to go pretty slow to keep it from separating. The non-floating one was a pain to use b/c I had to hold a string and each time it separated had to pull the string quickly to keep it from hitting the sand.
<br />
<br />The hammerhead has not separate one time yet. I have a 110 with 1/2" glass. I can feel how much stronger the magnet is than either of the old cleaners I used. I was hesitant to get this becuase of the price over the old floatmag but I can say I'm happy I did.

Comments: Excellent product. I went cheap and bought a mag float and was not satisfied at all. The magnet on the Hammerhead is STRONG and clears all the glass in stroke instead of several. Comments: They aren't kidding when they say that these are strong magnets. Almost too strong. But it removed algae on the sides that the mag float couldn't, mostly because of the pressure of the magnets. Additionally, this cleaner is designed to allow you to replace both the cleaning pad and the felt pad. This unit is expensive, no doubt. But worth every penny.

Comments: I've had this magnet before which latest 10 years. It's very durable and works great. However, the one I purchased 10 yrs. ago was smaller (approx. 2 1/2" x 3 1/2") which better suited my small 29 gal. reef tank. The new size magnet is larger and a bit over-kill for this size tank, but works great. Just wish it came a bit smaller in size, otherwise, this is a great magnet!

Comments: I replaced all my sinking magnets with Mag-Float when they came out years ago, but now I replace all my Mag-Float with Hammerhead and Piranha from this supplier though they are more expensive. Now I have 6 of them.
<br />
<br />Their product is not perfect, one time I found a Hammerhead was sinking because water was inside. I called the supplier and received their replacement within a week. No question was asked.
<br />
<br />I also love the extra pads which come with their magnets.

Excellent!

Comments: I bought a new tank and found my old cleaner was not strong enough to stay attached while cleaning. I have a 1/2 inch thick glass tank and this has no problem staying on and does a great job cleaning. A little expensive but worth it!

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Not very happy with the Magnet. It made some small scratches on the inside of the tank and it does not move very smoothly along the surface. Is there anything that works better or is their a different pad I can use?I have an Acrylic tank.

Below Average

Comments: I feel that the Piranha float for my acrylic aquarium is average at best. For the price I thought it would do a much better job at cleaning off the algea than the magna floats. It does not. I still have to go in with my arm and clean the walls of the fishtank with good old elbow grease. I would save some money and go with the less expensive magnets.

Comments: Finally broke down and got one. It is similar to the large Mag-Float in size and funtion, however it is not a big white eyesore on the inside and outside of the tank. It works well at removing most of the green stuff on the glass in a couple swipes, but some of the more stubborn stuff will either require more scrubbing or taking out the razor on a stick method. The wood side is nicely done and is more pleasing to the eye than the before mentioned. So if you want to keep the tank looking good while looking good in the process this is your toy!

Comments: I don't know if I was expecting to much out of an algae magnet, but the first time I used it, it scratched the heck out of my brand new acrylic tank. I followed all directions and made double sure that the pads were clean, positioned properly, and not contaminated with anything (there was no sand or snails in my aquarium at the time). Pretty much an expensive bummer right off the bat. I have corrected the problem by wrapping it in polishing cloths from the auto parts store; but for the price you shouldn't have to do this. The magnets are nice and strong though.

Comments: Very nice product. Put you scuba gear away to clean a large tank! My built into the wall 180 was a real pain to clean...this floating magnetic cleaner works great! If it slips off (which it doesn't do, unlike my old one) it just floats to the surface, no diving to get it back on the glass.

Comments: These are the nicest looking, highest quality magnet scrapers ive ever seen. if your like jimmy and Mr. Wolf (your an oak man) then this is a must have. Beware, dont let any sand(not one grain) get stuck between magnets or you will scratch the hell out of your glass, which happens easier than expected. Also, the piranha works better than the hammerhead

"Strong yet Expensive" - Product Review by Scott Vanzo (Posted on 2/1/08)

Great!

Comments: Even though it is considerably cheaper than the Magnavore, M-2ER, the Piranha seems pretty expensive when compared to my old Magna-float. However, the Piranha is a VERY strong magnet - perhaps too strong on my 3/8" glass as the magnet stutters a bit instead of gliding over the glass. Perhaps this will ease with time. Using the Piranha with the supplied Acrylic pad helps a bit since it separates the magnets slightly.
<br />
<br />Most importantly, the Pirahna does clean much better than my old float, perhaps due to the size of the pads and the strength of the magnet. One swipe is often all it takes to wipe an entire section of glass clean, not the repeated back-and-forth that I was used to.
<br />
<br />Included are one set of replacement pads and the acrylic pad (thin filter floss pad), which is a nice touch. Quality product.
<br />
<br />I deducted 1/2 star because it is so expensive ($30 would be ideal), and 1/2 star because mine seems to stutter a bit too much. Otherwise, I think the Piranha is an excellent product.

Comments: I have a 300 Gallon Predator tank in my living room, in it is a Lion Fish, French Angle, Blue Face Angle, Sail Fin Tang, Trigger Fish, Banded Zebra Eel and a Spotted Japanese Dragon Eel. It was difficult to get the glass clean on the inside given the size of the tank, the residents of the tank and the room it is in, wife would kill me if I made a mess in there. Now it is a walk in the park.One note of CAUTION.DONT GET THEM STUCK TOGETHER. IT TOOK ALOT OF WORK TO GET THEM APART. READ THE INSTRUCTIONS FRIST !!!!!!!!!!!!

"Algae Removal" - Product Review by Michael Holland (Posted on 11/30/07)

Excellent!

Comments: I was getting a lot of buildup of brown algae on my 180 gallon acrylic tank that a brush would not remove; you just can't get the leverage to really scrub the algae. It was also messy to use the brush. The Hammerhead float solved both problems. It still takes some elbow grease to get the algae off but it is a dream to use. Also, if you get a smaller magnet, it won't provide the grip to remove tough buildups. And if you get too strong a magnet it will be tough to pull through. I couldn't recommend this product more.

Comments: I've used Mag floats and scrapers of all sorts trying to keep my glass clean and always felt like it was a losing battle. I bit the bullet and bought this out of desperation. I can't believe all the time and money I spent on all of those other products. Save yourself the money and more importantly your time and just get this! Now what took me 3 to 4 hours a week takes only 15 minutes and looks much better!

Comments: I really love this tiger float algae magnet. I had a more expensive one in the past, and I actually like this one a lot better. The magnet is just strong enough, but not too strong to make it difficult to drag across the acrylic. I highly recommend it.
