"So far so good"
- Product Review by Carolyn Fridrich

Comments: Just received my AquaMaxx yesterday and put it together. The instructions were a little vague, but still got it put together. It is very very quiet. I had to modify it just a little to make room for my T-5 light that sits on top of my tank. The outside inlet tube stuck out too far, and was hitting the light, not allowing it to sit correctly on the tank. So I had to trim the connecting piece of tubing that connects the outside inlet pipe to the inside inlet pipe. It has been pulling a lot out so far. I have emptied the collection cup 3 times in the past 24 hours. It is built very well. It took a little time for it to initially prime, but if you follow their suggestion on putting the air hose from the silencer in the water, it will help it go smoother. Very pleased so far.

Comments: I'm only a beginner as an aquarist but i have had my tank a little over a year and decided to purchase this skimmer because my water hasnt been very clear since i've had the tank, so i purchased this beast here and within two days my tank is crystal clear, had some microbubbles for the first couple of days and pulled out a full cup of gunk as well. I dont see how this skimmer could get any better

Comments: Awesome, I mean, Awesome skimmer. Only knock is that it is slightly confusing to figure out how to put together. I am glad that there are videos online that show how to do so. This skimmer is made with excellent materials and made to last, very tough. Producing tons of quality skim in my 28 gallon tank. One of my best purchases for my reef tank as of yet! BUY IT! you will not regret it! FANTASTIC!

"Aquamaxx HOB-1 protein skimmer"
- Product Review by Christine Baker
(Posted on 7/28/12)

Comments: When I received my skimmer it took about 15 minutes to assemble. I agree that the directions were fairly vague, it just takes some time to figure them out. The skimmer is actually very attractive. I cleaned it first with vinegar and water and rinsed it well before adding it to my tank. It started producing skimmate the next afternoon. Each day I am getting darker and darker skimmate. I have had this skimmer for a week now and it's doing a much better job than the Aqua C Remora I just replaced. My Remora was LOUD!!! The Aquamaxx is pleasantly quiet, I just here trickling sounds which I actually find relaxing. I am very happy with this purchase so far.

Comments: What a Great Skimmer !!! Don't look around Just buy this one!!! First thing to do is run it for a few hours in a bucket with hot water and white vinegar then clean water to flush out.It will make start up days faster. Let me say one thing It takes a long time for the pump to prime on start up! took ten minutes for mine. Just place yellow tube down inside the skimmer box under the water and let it run !! Also set the skimmer cup HIGH it will run wet for the first few days if you can hook up the over flow hose to a bucket for a week or two. YOU will love this thing after the Break in !! It has pulled more stuff out in a week then my sea clone did in a month !!!!!!!!!

Comments: i couldnt be happier with this purchase. the unit is larger and sturdier than i expected. it really does look like industrial grade equipment. the motor is large, heavy and expensive looking. assembly was not difficult, but i can see how some people would have trouble with the directions. the skimmer is not even broke in and already producing dark skimmate rapidly!

"Good Idea, Many Bugs"
- Product Review by Joshua Kim
(Posted on 4/5/12)

Comments: I think many of the review have touched on this, but the main flaw of this skimmer is the mass amounts of micro bubbles that get into your main display. The only way to rid of these is time, but sometimes time is not enough. After months, I had to resort to an air regulator(not included) to gradually increase the air intake to finally remove MOST of the bubbles entering my tank. It is one of the better skimmers out there for its price. But I did not pay good money to make more problems for myself.

"Great skimmer with some TLC"
- Product Review by Vincent Putnam
(Posted on 3/16/12)
-
Comments: First off be aware this skimmer takes a long time to break in. It really took a solid month before it was running like it should. You might be able to cut this break in time down if you scrub it and clean it more than I did out of the box. If yours overflows constantly don't worry, it will get better. The next problem I had with it was the places where the suction tubes joined was pulling air into the skimmer. I fixed that by fusing them with PVC cement. Now it runs fantastic. I upgraded from a 40 gallon to a 90 gallon and now I'm running 2 of these bad boys. Works like a charm.

Comments: Ok so I set this skimmer up last night and it's already pulling stuff out of my tank! I was shocked, it's super quiet, easy set-up. The construction is the best I have seen ever very heavy duty acrylic. I have this set up on my JBJ 28 nano LED system and it fits perfectly, the only thing is you can't open the hood all the way, but can be corrected with mods. This skimmer- you get what you paid for,... quality!

"great skimmer"
- Product Review by Joshua Myers
(Posted on 2/3/12)

Comments: I have the Aquamaxx hob1 on my 1 month old 40 gallon reef and after the first 3 Weeks it's running great. Caution to buyers it's a very sensitive skimmer so it will take time and care to run properly. The first few Weeks the cup filled up with a lot of water, and didn't consistently skim like my remora did in the beginning. Micro bubbles were a problem too. After breaking in and finding the right cup height the skimmer is constantly removing waste and air bubbles have drastically gone down in the main display. Performance wise it's just as good as the remora was, but the best part about the hob1 is how quiet it is compared to all other hob skimmers. Not silent but as close a you'll find. If you're looking for a good quiet skimmer and have patience you will not be disappointed.

Comments: 24g Cardiff - fits 1st compartment
<br />- Great quality built (nice thick arcylic walls),quiet, all parts fit perfectly... I just wished they payed that much attention to the instructions
<br />- To prime pump, once completely assembled, fill compartment with aquarium water, turn on pump, stick (yellow) air hose in water and allow intake hose to siphon
<br />- After 1 week, very little micro bubbles in tank... tea consistency scum... everyday gets darker
<br />- Attempted to do modification (move intake to left of return pipe) but it reduced scum production significantly
<br />- To reduce return pipe sound and because of new T elbow (no need to be concerned about back siphon), put return into water
<br />- Would recommend to others

<br />
<br />One small issue is priming the pump...hold the air intake tube in the tank water until the pump is primed and you will not have a problem...After 24 hours, I have already had a half a cup of nasty skimate....I have tried plenty of HOB filter for my 47 gal tank, but have never been really happy....

"Excellent with some tweaks"

Comments: I have a 29 Gallon Bio Cube HQI - the skimmer that came with the unit - well, it was crap. I read many other skimmer reviews and this one seemed to be the best. Even my local store in Des Moines was impressed. I ordered it directly from here (great service - They even suggested just doing the free shipping - It was going to save me money and only get it one day later )... Now for the product. As everyone else has said... Packaged very well, the instructions were a bit on the lame side (especially the part about the discharge or return pipe's hight)... It took me 5 minutes to assemble - This skimmer looks gorgeous - wow. I turned it on, and it instantly started to make so much foam that it would overfill the cup. Luckily it has it's own overflow back into the unit. I fiddled with the unit, re-set, raised the collection cup and it still filled up almost instantly... I was getting very runny/liquid type foam. I called tech support and they re-assured me that this might happen, and not to worry. They also suggested to install a 1/2 tube line to the waste exit port (rather than dump back into the unit - to set the waste line to dump into a bucket or so)... I had already done so. This overflow drain feature was one of the reasons I chose this unit (no dirty water everywhere)... I had to do some minor tank modifications to have the system fit.. It took me 5 minutes as well. I did buy some extra pipe fittings so that I could make the unit fit into my tank how I wanted it. The unit brought everything for standard tanks - I just wanted the intake and return jets to be elsewhere (I guess this is to be expected -Otherwise it would be perfect for anyone else)... Additionally, I too was experiencing many return bubbles (others have also had this happen to them.)... After about 4 hours and changing the cup out three different times. The system started to cycle perfectly, and I was getting some milky, cloudy, scummy waste from the skimmer.

Comments: One word to potential buyer: 1st run the skimmer in warm water and vinegar. There is a lot of residue left over from manufacturing and if not done the skimmer takes a little longer to break in.
<br />
<br />Other than that, a little correct collection cup adjustment and the skimmer will pull some nastiness out of your tank. I also replaces the 90 degree elbow in the return with a 45 degree piece of pvc works better for me on my JBJ 28.

"Great skimmer!"
- Product Review by Nhan Do
(Posted on 12/23/11)

Comments: Package was very well pack . This product is much more beautiful in real life then the picture. Instruction was ok but not the best, the water level doesn't have to be below exit valves, no water height requirements. Works instantly. I am using it on a Cadlight 12G and it barely fit in the back but is awesome with it. I've tried 3 different nano skimmers and they are all horrible or too much microbubbles. This one is quite big for a nano tank but it looks nice so doesn't take away from the tank and works amazingly well! Best purchase ever and plenty of power for future tank upgrade, definitely rate as a 10,get it and you won't be disappointed.

Comments: Overall, nice skimmer. Well constructed. Motor is quiet. Generates a ton of bubbles. Takes a few days to break in where it would be a good idea to put an air valve at the end of the airline to control potential overflow.O ring design is a little silly to hold up the skimmer cup.I backed it up with a clamp I made. Hoping next iteration comes up with a rubber seal or something that can be retrofit. Other than that, really like the skimmer......

Comments: After 20+ years of freshwater I finally decided to go Salt. So this is my first skimmer, bare this in mind that I really have no other way to compare other hob's. For starters I was impressed that it is very thick and sturdy. Noise is comparable to my 48" Deep Blue T5's fans. It took about one hour to settle down (get the one with an overflow, worth it!) then began making skimmate by the third day. Before it made the skimmate there were a lot of microbubbles but by day 5 they are so few that it isn't noticeable. Overall a good pick for a beginner, not complex, quiet and effective.

Comments: I bought this skimmer to replace a AquaC Ramora skimmer because the pump on the Aquamaxx did not have to go into the tank. It started producing skimmate almost immediately. I had to adjust the hight of the collection cup a few times but I have it right now and it is producing a good amount of coffee colored skimmate. It producing much more skimmate than the Remora did. I would definitely recommend this skimmer.

Comments: This skimmer has been running for two days now and all I can say at this point is that it is quiet and is already making good skimmate. I know that the directions state that it can take up to two weeks for it to start "purring." My water parameters are already improving. It is also extremely quiet for a hang-on-back skimmer. The sound is hardly noticeable. It really makes some incredible bubbles. So far, so good!

Comments: After a month, I am pleased with the cleaning ability of the unit. I am disappointed with the water level requirement needing to be 4 inches below the exit tube. I had to build a stand and not let it hang on the back to accomplish this. Also, the exiting water is a little noisy and makes bubbles that splash on the light.

Comments: I received my Aquamaxx skimmer carefully and neatly packaged. When I opened it there were two parts missing. The instructions that came with the product are very poor, they consist of two sheets of paper with black and gray graphics (like someone quickly throw something together on a computer). No Owner's Manual provided for any further information on such things as say, trouble shooting!! My tank lip had to be modified with a dremmel for brackets to secure on the tank. I was not aware of any modification needs prior to purchase. At this price point I expected more from the manufacturers end. Once I had all the parts,figured out how to assemble it using the crummy instruction diagram, and modified the tank lip, I was able to plug her in. This skimmer works very well, making skimmate within a couple of hours. It is quiet. It does create alot of microbubbles- but I have been told that this will subside as the unit breaks in.

Comments: Skimmer is quiet and seems like it will work well. It is breaking in as it has only been on my tank 3 days. It does put bubbles out into my tank though. It also pops water onto my lights and leaves salt behind. I am a little disappointed that the pump that was supposed to ba a Sicce turned out to be a Shark, but otherwise I think it will work good.

"Hooked up to JBJ 28G LED Tank"
- Product Review by Justin Theurich
(Posted on 9/15/11)
-
Comments: Well overall construction is good and it works. Still adjusting my cup depth. Only thing I did not like about it is that I'll have to modify it to open the cover on my JBJ 28G. The pipes are so big and bulky and stick out to far. I'll have to trim about an inch from the outlet pipe and take some off the T splice so I can open my lid for tank maintenance. As of now I can only get it open about 4 inches before it hits the Skimmer. I was tired of my JBJ Nano skimmer, I was tired of changing out the air-stones that always junked out. All in all It's a great product but needs some modifications to work with my JBJ 28G. Second thing I didn't like is as of current I can't direct the flow of water from the refuge of back over the wall as the pipes are in way of the divider wall. So it dumps back into the same area its filtering from currently until I make the modifications.

Comments: I purchased this skimmer when I purchased all of my initial equipment from here. This is a great skimmer, it gets a lot of skim mate and is very, very quiet. The skimmer is a good looking unit, takes up very little space behind the tank and without knowledge of what I was buying since I was new, I made the right choice. That was 5 months ago and it just keeps on going and keeps my tank clear. It is my only source of filtration on my 36 gallon corner tank and does a wonderful job.

"Excellent Skimmer"
- Product Review by Robert Sandre
(Posted on 8/14/11)

Comments: I upgraded my system from a 25g nano tank to a 55g tank. Included in the 55g setup was a Red Sea Prizm Pro (deluxe) skimmer. After running the new system for a few months with the Red Sea skimmer I noticed a negative change in my water quality as well as the general health and appearance of my tank inhabitants. I decided to purchase the AquaMaxx HOB and after a 2 day breaking in period, the skimmer is pulling out dark skim mate and working very well. I have noticed an improvement in overall appearance of all my fish as well as invertebrates/corals. The bubble anemone looks much healthier as well.
<br />
<br />The skimmer is very quiet and includes an overflow prevention mechanism that saved my wood floors on the second day of use.

"Got skimmate on the first day!"
- Product Review by Joseph Gingerich
(Posted on 7/16/11)
-
Comments: I am making the jump from FOWLR to full-blown reef in my 55 gallon so my first purchase toward that goal was this skimmer. I started set-up by soaking and rinsing every part in quite hot tap water twice. I also made sure my hands were washed and dried first to prevent depositing hand oils inside the skimmer. Set-up was not too bad, but the directions could have been a bit clearer. I fired up the unit and was impressed at the super quiet operation! It is quieter than my AquaClear 70 HOB filter. I began getting some stinky skimmate within hours, and am working to dial in the cup height exactly. The overflow feature of the collection cup is awesome, as I would have had a mess otherwise! The only minor problem is some aquarium rims may need to be trimmed to fit the unit, but this is a common issue with may pieces of equipment. In my case, it fit without modification to the tank rim.

Comments: Unlike the previous customer, I did not experience any poor craftsmanship with the Aquamaxx HOB Skimmer. My skimmer was well packed and was well put together with no leaks of any sort. The bubble chamber works well and does it's job great.
<br />
<br />After a quick rinse in some vinegar water, the skimmer chugged away as expected. The unit is very quiet, not silent mind you, but quiet. The instructions however really lack any real good information and are outdated. Since the printing of the instructions they have upgraded the return with a T, making the need to keep the return from being fully submerged obsolete. Troubleshooting is no where to be found. My silencer was a little loose upon arrival, and the unit was really loud. No where in the instructions does it explain that tightening the screw will solve this problem. Another problem I have with this unit is the cord is VERY short. It will not reach the floor from my tank. So creating a drip loop is out of the question. I had to mount my power strip higher to accommodate it. All in some minor things I would change, but the unit itself does the job it is intended to do.

Comments: Was impressed by the skimmers look, and was exited by all the positive reviews. However, unfortunately the skimmer started to leak once i installed to my JBJ 28 gallon system, I'm guessing the cause of the poor workman ship was on the manufacturer. Despite the defected $200 skimmer i was pleased with websites custumer assistance, these guys are great, their knowledgeable and very professional: they helped me ship the skimmer back to their facility with no additional cost, and will send me a new one once they inspect it.

Comments: i have had this skimmer running now for the past week on a lightly soft coral stocked, 75 gallon artificial live seeded rock aquarium. The skimmer itself is well constructed and the instructions to put it together were clear and easily followed. It has been doing an excellent job in pulling out gunk out of the water. I haven't had to do much fiddling with it to get it to work steadily and don't expect to have to mod it either. Yes I would recommend it for a lightly stocked 75 gallon aquarium.

Comments: Writing this review in case anyone has this issue like I did. Set it up like the instructions say and my water level was only 2" under the hangers, which according to directions was ok. Turned it on and it overflowed the cup with clear bubbles that turned into water in a matter of 30 seconds. So I did a 75% water change after doing some internet research and topped the whole thing off. Now works great and constantly pulling sludge with no issue. Great product and great vendor!

"Perfect fit on my JBJ NC28"
- Product Review by Angelo Sanchez
(Posted on 4/15/11)
-
Comments: I had initially wanted to stay skimmerless on my NanoCube 28, but after running into nitrates hovering at 5-10 even with weekly water changes, I decided to take the plunge. I had initially wanted an AquaC Remora - until I heard how loud they are. Noise is a show-stopper for me. I came across the HOB-1 and saw plenty of favorable reviews, and even that I could make it work in the stock skimmer chamber of the NC28.
<br />
<br />Packaging was great, build quality excellent. It fits perfectly on the NC28 and allows hood to open for maintenance. It's nearly silent, and started producing a nice dark skimmate only hours after installation. I can't think of a single bad thing to say, I couldn't be happier.
<br />
<br />I guess the only catch is that it's a little pricier then other options for the NC28. For me, the extra $40 is worth having a silent skimmer. Plus this thing is rated to 75g which gives you future expandability options, unlike some of the cheaper models.
<br />
<br />Order it, you won't be disappointed...

Comments: i have to say its a great little skimmer that packs a big punch! on the 3rd day it was broken in, and its extreamly quiet! i cant tell its on in my tank. skim mate is very dark in color and the construction is very will made love the blue color. There are a couple of thangs i need to touch on about the skimmer cup that you may or may not encounter. The promblem i had with the collection cup that i notic was prematurely moveing on its own when it was starting fill up with waste! and when i hooked up a drain hose it made it worse! a couple of thangs i did to fix this was making shure that the seal is dry around the cup and i put a rubber band just above the seal for good measure and it doubles as a marker wich i like. the other thang i did was by useing a zip tie around my drain tubeing and hooked it to one of my power cords with just enough tention to keep the weight of the hose off the the colection cup and still be abule to move it up or down. i fell that AQUAMAXX is a great skimmer for the money but i hope they might look into comeing up with a bitter ajustment seal. i still give it a 5 star worth the money

"Just what I needed!"

Comments: Like others, I have this on the back of a JBJ 28g tank which is seahorse dedicated. Needed a good skimmer with two frozen meals a day these guys require. This skimmer is worth every penny. I found there was a little bit of a learning curve, as the cup height is key to getting a good foam started, so I adjust it accordingly. The construction of this unit is incredible. It is everything I needed for this tank and I can't say enough good about it.

Comments: This is a very well built skimmer and a plug and play to the Nano-Cube 28g. The sicce pump is definately a nice upgrade from the previous WM version. The only drawback was that you can not use the media basket when skimmer is operating. Also the canopy can not open fully. The Canopy Lid opens about 3-3.5 inches only due to the skimmer pegging the back of the canopy. Unless you cut or modify the back there is no other way. But again we have the access on top using the feed cover. Its when you have to scrap your glass *Maintenance* that can take more time to clean since you have to unplug and take the skimmer off.

"ITS A SKIMMER BEAST"

Comments: This thing is a beast!!!!!!! It pulls waste out the water with ease!!!!!!!! Ok, 1st thing it doesnt have the pump in the tank so it gives it a nice stream line look in the tank. Its quite not silent, my Light fixture fans are louder than the skimmer. But it pulls waste out every day, the only thing I didnt like was the T elbow connector for the return pipe.

Comments: Very efficient AND silent! I've set it up on my jbj 28g LED tank and it's keeping my water crystal clear.
<br />
<br />I had to shorten the outlet and inlet tubes by about an inch so I can open up the canopy. I also had to remove the media basket and replace it with a phosban 150 reactor. Only real negative point on a small system such as this: it raises the temperature. It wat around 84-85 before I installed a small 80 mm cooling fan. Now it's at a stable 80F. Good thing I don't have HQI.
<br />
<br />The air intake is blocking a bit after a while. Just send in some hot RO water in it and it should do the trick.

Comments: Wow!! This skimmer works great!! Easy to set up and adjust
<br />and it's one of the few skimmers you can use with the JBJ 29 Gallon tanks. Removes about 60ml of dark brown skimmate a day, keeps the tank water crystal clear.

Comments: The little sicci pump LAUNCHES the proteins from the water. This skimmer has a bunch of cool features. Very easy to clean and service. If I personally designed a skimmer, it would look and function exactly like this one. Kinda looks like the warner marine h1 but.....it is faaaaaaaaar from it. Love it!

"First Impressions"
- Product Review by Jason Hyatt

Comments: I just bought this skimmer after doing a lot of research. The order shipped the same day and delivery was very quick. As mentioned in some other reviews, the packing was very good and the skimmer is seemingly very well constructed. I have not been able to run the skimmer yet, so I will post another review commenting on its performance. For this first impression review, I simply wanted to confirm three things I read in other reviews:
<br />First, the power cord is very short and there was not any extention shipped with mine.
<br />Second, the image shown depicts a 90 degree elbow on the return line. Mine arrived with a "T" which should allow for air escape upon water return.
<br />Last, if you have a standard tank like mine (75 gallon rimmed), the skimmer will not fit over the rim without modifying a standard 15/16" rim by cutting off a couple of sections of the lip. This is the reason mine is not yet operational. I will need to buy a dremel to cleanly cut the lip off of the tank rim in order to get the skimmer properly installed on the tank.

Comments: This is the first product review I have written. I can honestly say that is the best equipment I purchased for my tank, even better than my Vortech mp10es. I have a heavily stocked JBJ 28 LED reef tank and was running the stock skimmer. I upgraded the stock air pump with a Luft pump hoping for better skimate. The Aquamaxx Hob skims in 1 day what took the stock skimmer 1 week to produce. This fits perfectly in the skimmer section of the nanocube without any major modifications. The only thing I did is cut a small section of the tank lip so the skimmer would sit flush. I did this with a standard boxcutter and it was super easy and took less then 5 minutes. You can also shorten the inlet and outlet so you can fully open the lid(I would not do this until after the warranty expires). I still have my media rack in the center section with a JBJ led macro light. I only had the skimmer running for 4 days and I am getting a dark tea colored skimmate. It's mesmerizng to watch the micro bubbles come out of the bubble plate. In conclusion I could not ask for a better skimmer for my nanocube and would have paid double for it.

"Good Product"

Comments: I just received my skimmer last night after 6-8 weeks on backorder. The wait was worth it. However, the directions that come with this skimmer are fair at best. Before buying this skimmer, measure the black plastic lip on the top of your aquarium. My Oceanic 75g was 3/32nds to wide but quite frankly, I think all glass aquariums that use versa tops are the same measurement. I called Customer Service and they're great. They suggested that I modify the tank lip, which I did. I used a dremel to gently shave off some lip to get it to fit properly with the skimmer holder arms. Once on the tank, I primed it and within 10 minutes I started getting some gunk. Today, I'm not getting the gunk like last night but I know there is a break-in period. The skimmer is quiet, though you do hear an ever so slight gurgle sound but its more background sound than anything intrusive. I like this skimmer. It is solidly built, it produces mad amounts of microbubbles in the chamber and it's quiet. I didn't give it a 5 because of the tank lip thing. I suggested that they relay this tank lip thing to Aquamaxx and they assured me the would. All in all, a very good skimmer. I'll write another report after it has been in use for 3 weeks or so.

Comments: Very satisfied with this skimmer. It is by far the quietest and best working hang on skimmer that I have ever used. I have tried many hang on skimmers over the years (Remora, eshopps, bak-paks, octopuss, and home made)and can definately say I am happiest with this one. I also like the way the whole thing comes apart so you can clean those hard to reach places with ease. Would definately recomend this skimmer!!!

"Great skimmer"
- Product Review by David Schwartz

Comments: I was so impressed how how well made this skimmer is. Extremely easy to put together and take a part for cleaning. The written instructions is the way to go because the youtube video is useless. It fails to tell you how to prime the pump which is a major part of the process of getting it started. So follow the written instructions and you'll be good to go. I have a 28g Nano Cube and had a JBJ protein skimmer before I got this skimmer. This is like night and day. The pump on the HOB-1 is very strong and the unit fits very well on my tank. This really is the only good skimmer out there that I know of that will fit on a Nano Cube. I love the color of the skimmer and sits nice and snug on the lip of the tank. No bubbles are in the tank which I was a little scared of happening. So far so good. Can't wait until its fully broken in. I highly recommend this skimmer especially if you have a Nano Cube.

"Newbie's First Skimmer"
- Product Review by John Earney
(Posted on 9/16/10)

Comments: So, as most people do, I did days worth of research before making a decision on a skimmer. I am new to marine aquariums and am currently running a 29g with about 25 lbs of live rock and 2 peppermint shrimp. It has been up and running for about 6 weeks. I digress, got the skimmer in yesterday and it is indeed beautiful, well made and well packaged. The directions however leave something to be desired. Once I read all the directions and got this bad boy mounted on the tank. First thing I noticed is that the hangers are not deep enough to allow the screws past the "rim" of my standard 29g. Also the screw gets in the way of the intake tube so it is canted which is visually unappealing. Once I filled the skimmer with water and got it running there seemed to be a steady "gurgle" from the air in tank "silencer"?? I think I will toss some cotton balls in there to see what happens. Also there seems to be quite a few bubbles escaping into the tank I hope this will clear up?! And lastly the most annoying thing of all... The directions state that the return should not be completely submerged. What does that mean? How? What does it do? Form the box my skimmer came with a "T" from the return, followed by a short pipe straight down, followed by an elbow. Is this a mod so that you can keep the elbow underwater? AquaMaxx needs to clear something up. P.S. The YouTube videos are useless.... With all that said I will be doing another review to see if things clear up. I do like the unit very much and I hope I can give it 5 stars on my re-visit.

"Excellent skimmer"
- Product Review by Anna Dermedy
(Posted on 8/25/10)

Comments: Well i bought this skimmer a week ago today and let me tell you this skimmer works very well. the bubble production is something else. Its not cheap acrylic, its made very well. I have used cpr, aquac remora, prizm, deltec mce300, deltec mce600, in the past. The aquamaxx hob skimmer is much better than the deltec mce300 but the deltec mce600 takes over the aquamaxx hob hands down. but for $545 for the deltec mce600 you can buy the aquamaxx hob $199 that does a very very good job, and save or buy other equipment for ur tank. Anyhow the aquamaxx hob is very quite and does an excellent job at removing waste from your tank. I have been in the hobby for over 8 years and i wouldnt give a good recomendation if it didnt deserve it. If you are hesitate in buying this....DO IT!! BUY IT!!! YOU WILL NOT REGRET IT AT ALL!!!!!!!! NO COMPLAINTS FROM THIS SKIMMER FROM ME!! I AM VERY HAPPY WITH MY PURCHASE!!! I WOULD DO IT AGAIN AND AGAIN IF I HAD TOO!!! ;^)

"Best Skimmer Yet!"
- Product Review by Adam Eugenio

Comments: After owning 3 other different skimmers (Visi-Jet, CPR BakPak 2, Eshopps PSK75H) & all being junk, I decided to go with this. Very glad I did! First off, the packing job on this skimmer was perfect. There was more cardboard, foam, peanuts, & air bags than I have ever seen on anything i've ever had shipped to me from anywhere! Guess Marineland read about the few people who got broken parts & fixed the issues.Also wanted to mention, a few people said the power cords were only 3 feet & didn't reach anything, well AquaMaxx now ships their skimmers with an extension cord that increases the length to I believe 6-8 feet total.EVERYTHING disassembles for easy cleaning & I mean ALL OF IT. Even the silencer is 3 pieces! Very nice design. The blue color looks just awesome on the tank. Foot print inside the tank isn't too bad at all. Ran it for 20 mins in hot water then put it in the tank & it INSTANTLY started working perfectly and now it skims roughly an inch of tea colored skimmate every few days & it's starting to skim better and better from there! The overflow design is nice & if people are concerned of it draining back into the skimmer, all you gotta do is buy a tube to attach to the skimmer cup and down into a bottle or gallon jug. Or just empty it every few days which you should do anyways. It would take forever to fill the cup anyways since this cup is very tall & the drain is also tall.I did however do a few mods already just because I can't stand to leave things stock. I put teflon tape on all the fitting to keep them air tight (which I believe you should always do with any fittings anyways, its why they made the tape in the first place). Also took a sponge you'd put on a powerhead intake & modified it to fit over the outlet of the skimmer & have the tube running almost completely horizontal then elbow down so no splash/noise or return bubbles.

Comments: I have had a lot of skimmers, lots of different sizes and shapes and this is one nice skimmer. About one of the other reviews that states " It says to make sure that the outlet tube is not complete submerged in water, that is impossible unless you want to keep five gallons less water in your tank" It is VERY easy to do. All that you need to do is turn the drain to the left or right....thats it. It will help keep the water in the skimmer level.

Comments: This Skimmer is wonderful. I just received on Friday 7/30 and it is already starting to skim and pull green crap out of the water. I did however rinse the main chamber with warm water, and run the skimmer in warm fresh water for about 10 mins prior to using. I not 100% sure if that helped but its working properly in just two days. I am completely satisfied with the product so far. It is a very straight forward design, and easy to use and adjust. I am not sure excatly how it compares to other skimmers because this is my first. However, it seems to be working well...the water is already clearer. One tidbit of info that might be usefull as i was kinda confused by it. It says to make sure that the outlet tube is not complete submerged in water, that is impossible unless you want to keep five gallons less water in your tank. Mine is completely in the tank and running fine. Wonderful service

"It works on a nanocube 12!"

Comments: Used this to replace my nano remora on my 12 gallon nano cube at work. Nano remora was so loud that I had to turn it on only after work hours. Placed the Aquamaxx where the nano remora was and turn it on. Silence!!! I can finally have a skimmer on during work hours and pull junk out of my water. Plus, it doesnt have the pump in the tank, unlike the remora, which increases tank space.
<br />
<br />The blue color is awesome and makes it easy to see the microbubbles going up the collection cup.
<br />
<br />I put warm fresh water from the tap into the skimmer to run it for 20 minutes to get the oil out. I highly recommend doing it because when I placed it in my tank, it started working instantly!
<br />
<br />Only issue I have is that the drain valve on the collection cup doesnt move so if it ever overflows, it shoots directly back into the skimmer.

Comments: This skimmer has quality construction, a powerful pump, and it broke in within two days. The only problem I have with it is that the power cord was only about 3' long... not even long enough to reach the floor. You also will have to shorten the inlet and outlet tubes to fit it in the back of a nano-cube 28 and still open the hood, but this is very simple.

Comments: This is the best HOB skimmer that I have seen so far. The design is original and efficient, it arrives fully assembled, just add water and start. They recommend rinsing it with warm water to speed up breaking in process - do as they recommend. It starts making bubbles and skimmate right away. It is slim, takes little space on the tank rim, quiet, and, yes, blue. I am so very impressed!!! Great value for the money!

Comments: Skimmer construction was quite impressive for the price. Excellent pump quality with a bubble plate really makes this thing rip up the proteins. You can easily adjust the cup height to accomodate just about any water level you desire. Microbubbles have be pretty much been obsolete all together. They also use a larger airline with needlewheel so the foam productions is great compared to any other hang on skimmer I have used. Highly recommended and on top of it all....it looks killer with the royal blue acrylic plastic.
