Caribsea Arag-Alive Bahamas Oolite 10 lb Information

CaribSea’s Arag-Alive!™

Only CaribSea’s Arag-Alive!™ Live Sands contains not just the broad spectrum of marine bacteria found in the ocean, but additional specially selected strains of marine bacteria as well. Arag-Alive!™ compresses new tank cycle time and suppresses the initial ammonia spike. Arag-Alive!™ creates a natural biological balance, and makes cycling a new aquarium faster and safer. Live rocks and most invertebrates can be added immediately. Gradually introduce fish within the first 3 weeks, and do not exceed one inch of fish per 5 gallons during this time.

Bahamas Oolite - This oolitic sand is ideal for shallower beds, allowing denitrification in as little as 1” depth. The most friendly to bottom dwelling creatures; its fine grain size can pass easily through the gills of gobys and other sand sifting organisms. Also an excellent choice for the cultivation of seagrasses (true plants) such as Thallasia species. Gentle to sharks and rays. Grain size 0.1 - 1.0 mm.

"live sand" - Product Review by Bertie Millner (Posted on 8/25/12)

Excellent!

Comments: The sand is very fine and is perfect as a sandbbed, making it look like the ocean bottom. Within just a few days we could see little tunnels in the sand.

Great!

Comments: Only comment is the it was a bit finer than I thought it would be. Almost like dust. Otherwise the color is great and look beautiful in my new JBJ 6gal.

Excellent!

Comments: This sand is very fine and very beautiful. I have used to this in two different saltwater aquariums. If/When I setup another I will be coming right back to this sand again. It will get cloudy but quickly settles in less than 24 hours.

"Too much hassle" - Product Review by Michael Harris (Posted on 3/24/08)

Comments: First the good: the sand looks great and you can really cycle an aquarium fast. Unfortunately, it has several other less desirable traits.

For one, it's so dense that burrowing animals have a tough time digging into it. My sand sifting sear star was never able to bury itself in the stuff, try as it might.

However, the single most annoying trait is that this stuff flies everywhere at the slightest disturbance. Cleaning the sides or the aquarium is especially difficult as the sand gets kicked up into the water and has a nasty tendency to get between your algae scraper and the glass, scratching the bejesus out of it (if you've got an acrylic tank). And if you have gobies that like to dig, prepare for this sand to coat every square inch of your live rock.
