Coralife Deep Six Hydrometer Wide Range Specific Gravity Meter Information

Are you the type of aquarist who relies on the chemical make-up of the water when maintaining the tank? While this method is proven to be more effective than just installing several filtration devices, you might find it difficult to do some experiments without making a mess. Fortunately, for you, the Coralife Deep Six Hydrometer Pet Store is now available on the market for your enjoyment. This is quite the unique gadget, which will continuously monitor the salinity of the liquid while it is in operation. You have the option to fix this permanently on the glass case, or use it occasionally.

With a measurement of six inches in length, an inch in width, and eleven inches in height, this probe will allow you to monitor the physical and chemical make-up of the water, which is at the very base of the tank. This device is equipped with a probe, which will enable you to take samples of the liquid, if you plan on doing extra experiments. It is very durable, and it is designed to be fully immersed under the water, so you don’t have to worry about the possible wear-and-tear.

You can be confident that your water is always at its best in terms of its salinity and pH level when you regularly use the Coralife Deep Six Hydrometer.

The re-designed deep six hydrometer with improved calibration and bubble diffuser ensures more accurate readings of your aquarium salt levels. Also includes a built in base so you can rest the hydrometer on a counter top or other flat surface when taking salt readings.
  • Specific Gravity and Salinity PPT Scales
  • Optimal Specific Gravity / Salinity range indicator on scale
  • Bubble diffuser on water intake prevents micro-bubbles from forming on needle

"DO NOT BUY" - Product Review by Joseph Barreca (Posted on 7/13/09)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: I have used cheap hydrometers in the past but this is by far the WORST I have come across. I just purchased a Refractometer.

Comments: I bought this hydrometer because I have used other Coralife products, and have been very happy. This product, however, is not living up to its claim. If you hold the unit by the little tab at the top, it floats and only collects water skimmed from the surface (it claims to collect from 6 in below surface).I have to tap on it to get a reading. In fact, I find myself checking and rechecking. I'm going back to my old hydrometer. I don't trust this product.

"Your doin it wrong" - Product Review by Chance Phillips (Posted on 4/24/09)

Great!

Comments: The deep six hydrometer works great. Just make sure you know how to use it properly. Tap all of the bubbles out and fill it clear to the top.
<br /> A difference in salinity of .010 isn't going to kill even the most finicky of marine life. Not even close. Give your animals more credit.

"Dangerous" - Product Review by Piper Keairnes (Posted on 2/4/09)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: This product is very easy to use, but it gives incorrect readings. Do not trust it.I always rinsed it in freshwater after use. I usually had to take several readings and tap to release air bubbles in order to get a consistent reading. But ultimately I was having to add too much salt mix to my replacement water so I figured the hydrometer might be wrong. I bought the refractometer, calibrated it, and found that my tank was actually running at 1.030. It wasn't a total disaster, but it is definitely not what I wanted. Skip the cheap hydrometers and get something you can trust.

"Extremely inaccurate" - Product Review by Anna Jordan (Posted on 1/26/09)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Dont waste your money on this product. Spend an extra 30 dollors and buy the marine depopt refractometer. They are like 40-50 bucks. These are really never calibrted to begin with, and are almost always extemely wrong with there readings. Dont waste your time or money.

"These devices stink." - Product Review by George Mezori (Posted on 7/30/08)

Comments: They "may" be good for you at first... IF they are. Othewise over time they will 100% for sure fail you. Salinity in a reef tank has to be controlled pretty tight. My swimgarm told me I had 1.025.. it was 1.029 via Refractometer. I HIGHLY suggest a refractometer... they are cheap... just a tiny bit more than a swingarm.

"Completely Inaccurate" - Product Review by Peter Maag (Posted on 5/15/08)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Purchased this hydrometer in hopes of keeping my hands dry and replacing my Instant Ocean hydrometer. While it does keep your hands dry it was completely uncalibrated. My Deep Six measured the SG at 1.024 when a calibrated refractometer at the LFS read the SG at 1.031! Completely inaccurate, would never purchase again.

"Definitely a piece of junk" - Product Review by Materson Zeno (Posted on 5/9/08)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: I had a similar experience as others, in that the reading was off by 0.004! (yes, enough to do damage). I took it to the pet store and when using a sample of water which was confirmed at 1.022 with a fancy refractometer, the reading was 1.018 on the deep six! So the salesperson agreed to ship it back to Coralife and opened a new one for me. Guess what that one read 1.019! Don't waste your money. The Instant Ocean (Marine Depot Item # AS2141) is much better once you learn how to get the water in it without bubbles (which admittedly is tricky with that model).

Great!

Comments: i just set up my first saltwater aquarium. since i am not an expert by any means i have a lot of questions and need detailed instructions, even for the simplest of things. i used my hydrometer last night and it really easy to use after i went to my local pet store and asked them how to use it. i am only giving this product 4 gold stars because of the lack of clear directions.

"A piece of junk." - Product Review by Victor Brienza (Posted on 12/6/07)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: This hydrometer recently caused me some serious grief. It was reading my new 24 gallon aquapod's salinity at 1.024. My local aquarium store also measured the salinity with their own Deep Six hydrometer, recieving the same reading...perfect right? No. I soon discovered that every fish i bought would die after about a week even though my water chemistry was perfect. On a whim, I purchased a good quality refractometer and tested the salinity. This more precise device measured the salinity at a wopping 1.0295! No wonder fish were dying. So... one faulty hydrometer right? No. After bringing my refractometer to my aquarium store the salseperson was shocked to find that all three of his deep six meters were also in error, as his systems were running at a much higher salinity than he expected. In conclusion, if you are truly serious about fishkeeping, invest in a refractometer. Hydrometers like the Deep Six are simply to unreliable to entrust with the lives of expensive livestock.

"Rookie Proof- However..." - Product Review by Kirk Davis (Posted on 11/5/07)

Excellent!

Comments: Ok, here is the trick to using this baby... don't forget to sink it rightside up into the water... I have watched people dip it top-first into the water- which is cool too, but not as accurate a reading and not the point of it. First if you do it top first, you get a bunch of bubbles on the pointer... BAD NEWS. Either way you do it, make sure you tap, tap, tap, the hydrometer on a table or your head or something else hard to displace the micro-bubbles on the pointer. You may think they don't matter, but they really, really can change the reading.
