CPR CY194 Filter (Filter Only) Reviews

"Superior Filter System" - Product Review by Edward Bowman (Posted on 3/2/12)

Excellent!

Comments: I have been a marine hobbyist for 30+ years. This is IMO the best filter system on the market. When comparing it to the Rena-Fishstar (or similar under tank filters) there simply is no comparison. Primarily based on Cost-To-Operate. The small round/square under tank filters are approximately $22.00 ea where i live and each filter system has 2-4 filters and need replacing every 1-2 months and cleaning a lot more often then that! The CPR-CY series filter is a filter-sheet that costs $6.00 and contains 3 filters. So, while the Cy194/294 cost more initially, the maintenance cost will save you thousands over the life of the tank/filter system compared to other systems. The protein skimmer is a little noisy (it is an air-pump after all) but changing out the air intake can minimize that. If you are running freshwater, probably do not need to use the protein skimmer anyway, and its use is optional - simply do not plug in the pump. The 194 is also large enough to handle more water flow then one rio2500 return pump. I have 2 return pumps on mine. You will want to (MUST) put a siphon pump on the overflow box to prevent the siphon from breaking....that is very very bad - and causes a flood. Again. over 20 years of use, and using other systems on my other tanks, this is by far the best filter system on the market!

"great skimmer" - Product Review by Tammy Tran (Posted on 6/6/09)

Great!

Comments: I added this sump w/skimmer to my 30 gallon cube and it really does a good job. I had to modify it a little because I didn't have the space under my cabinet for an external pump so I routed the hoses from inside where I had the pump sitting. Still the product is a pretty good one. The skimmer does a great job collecting too.

"Not a great product" - Product Review by Patrick Corcoran (Posted on 7/9/08)

Comments: I ordered this sump for use with a FOWLR 92 corner. I chose it based on its compact design and inclusion of a skimmer. While it works well as a trickle filter, it returns noticeable amounts of micro-bubbles to the tank. Additionally, the skimmer is all but useless. It's placement in the main sump causes protein build up around the unit, it is incredibly hard to adjust and will generally either produce no skim at all, or produce large amounts of thin, watery skim containing very little waste material. Additionally, the pump is incredibly loud and the skimmer compounds the micro-bubble problem. This was such an issue that I removed the skimmer all together and now use a Remora hang on unit. I then added baffling to the sump to take care of the micro bubble problem. The plus side is that there is now room for a sand bed and rock rubble in the sump, but overall this product was not worth it.
