Danner Mag-Drive Supreme 2 250 GPH Water Pump Reviews

"Great pump" - Product Review by Alejandro Solano (Posted on 9/20/12)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: Mag 12 pump is very quiet and it gives me a lot of water movement. I had my old mag5 for about 6 years and that's y I went with another mag pump for my new 90 gallon reef. Only thing I didn't like us that I had to go buy the top piece that connects to the return line

Comments: This pump works flawlessly. It pushes a stubborn reactor that other "higher power" pumps fail to do. I love the NPT fittings as well, thank you. Props to Danner. Although, I wish there were some kind of pad or suction cup to insulate from vibration where a hard mount isn't the best option. Whatever... I'm buying another Danner mag soon.

Comments: This is a powerful pump. I got the 9.5, but the pump rusts at the screw holes on the pump cover and the screws rust as well. I took the pump out of service for this reason.

Comments: Its a good quiet pump. Was hoping for more flow but all in all its a great pump. Noise was very important and it is very quiet. I would recommend this pump to anyone. So far i would not use any other. I have it on a 90. gal. tank and works well

Comments: I use two of these to do a water exchange between a 7.0 cubic foot chest freezer and a larger reservoir that keep my minnows in. I can't even hear these things run but they're cycling some large amounts of water. I'm very pleased with my purchase.

Comments: This pump has been running for about two months now. Everything is doing well. Easy installation and clear instructions. I am using this as a return line on my 50 gallon.

Just a note to anyone considering these pumps: Take note of the section in the instruction manual on the proper size pipe for optimum flow. For instance, this pump has an outlet of .75

Comments: I have used Sicce pumps in the past. I was not satisfied with the noise that associated with them as I have two 90 gal tanks in the living room. The Mag Drive Supreme is much quieter than the Sicce, and much cheaper to buy. Overall I am very pleased with the Danner Mag-Drive Supreme pump.

Comments: The pump that came with my protein skimmer died. Customer Service recommended the Mag Pro 9.5 as a replacement pump on my Aqua C EV120. It has a small footprint, runs quiet and produces more output than the stock pump. It does run warm, but i have a decent chiller. Hopefully, it will hold up as the reviews tend to criticize the build quality of the impeller. I had to open the waste gate on my skimmer to handle the output. I hope to get more skimmate.

Comments: Tried using pump for both return pump and feeding skimmer, works well for both jobs but.. increases water temp and lots of noise(drowns out all other pumps from systen). Good price and pumps a lot of water. Currently using for skimmer pump but will replace with another pump in the future and use the Mag 7 for water changes ect. Can't get over temp and noise.

Excellent!

Comments: I have this mag 9.5 going up to a 50 gallon tank, 3' higher than sump, and I should of had a much larger drain than 1". This pump is about as loud as my zoo med 501 canister filter. I have three 1/2" ball valves restricting the flow at the tank, draining into a 20 gallon crabitat/sand bed draining into a 25 gallon sump. I would use a 2" drain if I was to use this pump on another tank. I used 1" pipe from the pump to the tank. 3/4"-1" adapter at the pump. freshwater setup.

Comments: I just replaced my old Mag 1800 with a new one after 13 years of 24hr/day use! I would say that I got my money's worth! The old one is still running - just not as strong as in its early life. The new pump gave a noticible increase in water flow. It is quiet and even smaller than the previous model. Shipping was quick. Would definitely recommend MagDrive to everyone. Well built. Strong. Easy to clean. Love it!

Comments: I use this for my sump return in my salt water tank. This is the third one I have purchased over the past 5 years. I think that ~2.5 years of continuous use is pretty good for any product, especially one submerged in salt water. I would recommend this pump, but have another on hand or be ready to order another WHEN it fails (everything fails at some point).

"Mag 7" - Product Review by Peter Kordelski (Posted on 12/27/11)
Rating
Great!

Comments: Typical of Mag pumps, they run great and last forever. I have Mag 12's on two of my skimmers and this Mag 7 is an upgrade for a mag 3 return pump on a smaller tank. I needed more head pressure and flow and this pump produced it. However it is a little noisy as it vibrates the return plumbing. A rubber pad on the bottom should eliminate this minor vibration.

Comments: I have a 180gal with dual drilled returns, and a 55gal oceanic sump drilled. I put 2 of these 950's on it with average 5' haed hight, and they screeeeeeam!!! had them going over 2 years with not one problem. The best! One recomendation to new users, if you have and of the mags, and your system is off for a while and the casing to the pump cools, you will notice some dripping. Do not worry, when they are running they warm up and stop dripping. Had it with my 500gph mags too.

Great!

Comments: This is a fairly reliable pump. I run a mag 12 and have this one in case it dies. The important thing is to keep sand out, and clean at least every 3 months with vinager. I gave an extra star because if the pump dies within the 5 year warranty you can pay to ship it back and they will take care of you. I have sent 1 back so far no problems.

Comments: I stuck the pump in a bucket of rocks until my sump is ready. But my wife couldn't sleep due to the noise-from another room! Looked at it today and found that the impeller doesn't quite cover the shaft, allowing it about an 1/8" of wiggle room causing a nasty rattle. It does move a lot of water and have a small footprint, so two stars. Also runs pretty hot, if I run it, it'll be external.

Comments: I've been running 2 Mag-18's for 5 years non-stop. I soak them in vinegar yearly, but they're never dirty. They're very quiet. The only way to improve it would be energy and heat efficiency. Then it would be 5 stars. I just bought a 3rd for backup because i'm in denial something can run for 5 yers and not break.

"solid." - Product Review by Andras Megyeri (Posted on 7/22/11)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: this is a very solid pump. I got it for my 15 G sump that goes roughly 4 feet below my 40G fowlr. The outlet was 1/2" so i had to use a CPVC adapter to connect a 3/4" pipe. Either way, the flow is extremely strong. I read a lot of reviews about how loud it is. I disagree. It's true that the more you restict the flow the louder it gets but even then I do not think it's loud. Have been running it for about a week and a half now with no problems. Make sure you put a pall bearing in to change flow.

Comments: I rate this pump 5 stars:I have used various Danner Mag pumps since they became availabe for purchase years ago. I would rate this pump excellent in quality and durability with flawless operation. The last Danner pump I purchased has been in operation for the past 6 years without missing a beat(24/7). My new Danner 9.5 Mag pump will be placed in a 350 gallon fresh water pond (operating 24/7 as well). I strongly recommend Danner pumps to anyone who is considering a Mag pump purchase. "Nice Pump, Works as Intended" - Product Review by Shawn Mcannally (Posted on 6/15/11)
Rating
Great!

Comments: Using this to pump RO/DI water from the storage bin to the reef tank and from the wastewater bin to my grass. It works well and is easy to use.

Only complaint is that it's easy for the outer cover to slip off and that can be a slight annoyance, as the inner pieces will pop out of place and need to be reseated. This only takes 30 seconds, so it's not the end of the world.

It's pretty quiet and vibrations are sensed rather than truly heard. I haven't noticed any significant heat being generated either.

I'm a reef noob but I've kept Malawi cichlids for close to 10 years. So I'm not a pump expert by any means...

Unsatisfactory

Comments: A little disappointed ! The pump states,at a four foot head it will pump 800 gph. Even though i branched it off to a 1/10 chiller with 3/4 in tubing, the flow rate was reduced to 180 gph. I don't think they have there specs right, the chiller wouldn't have reduced it that much.

Unfortunately after just 1 week of use the pump has failed completely, impeller broke off from the rotor magnet. Build quality seems to be rather poor.

Comments: Bought this for my husband. We had a 1200 that the impeller had to be replaced on. While it was being repaired we ordered this and intend to use the 1200 as a backup. Wow!! The only problem is that it is so powerful I had to install a T returning to refugium. Didn't want to valve it down and strain the pump. It's quiter than the 1200. We have a 90 gallon tank and we could probably keep our wavemaker off and just run the main pump.

Comments: loud, huge power usage, doesn't start up right, hard to clean, Danner has bad customer support!

only good thing about this pump is it can push water once you get it started which might take a few smacks

I broke the center shaft cleaning this pump called Danner they will only sell the complete impeller assembly not the fragile center shaft instead of buying a new impeller assembly for $16 i will put that towards a better pump

Comments: I'd had a Mag5 plumbed-dry on my CO2 unit for my planted tank for 6-years. It ran dependably and silently for 6-years until its impellar went. I ordered a new one and while waiting for it, I neglected to unplug the Mag5 because I had a lot of other stuff on my mind...and...it, of course, seized. So, I ordered a Mag3 (the Mag5 was a little over power for this application so my error, at least, gave me an opportunity to fine-tune) and I have it working now for over a week. Also, I believe the Mag5 and Mag3 use the same impellar. It's hooked up in the exact same way that the Mag5 had been and it's working dependably and silently, as I had expected. I know some people encounter vibration or noise from the Mag pumps but I've used them extensively (I have two in the sump of my reef-tank, also for 6years) and I find them to be great pumps every time. They never make a peep and they stop and start on timers, for feeding, etc. I think it's a matter of being very careful to get all the air out of the pump before it's started up, whether plumbed dry or in a sump. If that's done correctly, I think there's no way that anyone'd experience any noise at all.

Comments: Well Ive had this pump running for a couple of weeks now and it works well but it tends to make bubbles. Ive checked every possible other suspect for the bubbles but have found it to be the pump. This pump is also a bit noisy compared to others which is no bug deal but worth mentioning for those who want quiet. The thing that kind of bugged me the most about this pump is that it does NOT come with any adapters or accesories. All the other pumps ive purchased come with these things. Im not that impressed with this pump.

Comments: The quality of the pump is top notch. I had to go to a plumbing store to get the parts I needed as Lowes didn't carry much of a pvc selection. It was easy to plump straight from the pump to the chiller and back to my return/bulkhead. I have about 7-8 feet from pump head to the tank return and the flow is not as powerful as I expected. I would go with the next pump size up (as long as the dimensions are the same), as it fit nicely in the rear part of my 60G uniquarium. It did not come with rubber feet so I have some vibration noise which I do not like, but I may just put a thin piece of filter foam on the bottom to remedy that issue. The pump head can be moved 90 degrees to make the pump profile a little smaller if needed. Overall I like the product and would buy again, but one size bigger due to the length of hose I have with my setup.

Comments: I am using this pump as recommended as one of two pumps that come with the AquaC EV 120 protien skimmer....I have been using the Rio 2100 which mysteriously is now too strong and fills the chamber with water.....Upon setting up the Mag drive, which is a very strong pump...too strong..the ceramic shaft snapped in two after about 10 min. into use....I was able to bore out the rubber heads that hold the shaft to allow rotation and glue the shaft inside the magnectic housing and the pump is working until I get a new shaft...seems a metal shaft would make more sense....The pump is quiet and strong and seems to do the job....It does not produce as much foam as the 2100, but at least it is much more adjustable for use with this protien skimmer. The really nice thing is that it is much smaller than the 2100 and fits in tight spots much better....

Comments: Well, On my 180G reef I use a mag 12 and my mother wanted a new pump for her pond. She was looking at a $79 home depot pump which while powerful, wasn't durable. The Mag 7 puts out the same if not more water for the same price, and is sure to last me for many years to come.

Comments: I had put off ordering this pump because of the price, but I have changed my return pump three times for various reasons...mostly the noise or the strength of the pump...but I installed this Mag 18 for my 150 gallon and my water is sparkling..it's super quiet and it really moves water! Great pump...I only wish I had made this investment sooner. Thanks!

Comments: look like its built like a tank but don not install this pump outside the pump. after 3 days of use i inspected the pump i i saw salt leaks from the cover attached by screws. looks the the pump could use a better O ring to prevent this. from the the beginning, this pump was not all that great. when i started it, it has such a rough start i thought the thing blew up. i was extremely disappointed with the results of this pump. i sent it back

Comments: I like these pumps but it seems like after a few years the gasket will start to leak. I've had the same thing happen to 2 pumps already. This is my third pump. If you get the pump, and it is in an area that you can't have any leaks, set it in something so it will leak in the pan. I was able to fit a cat litter pan in the area where the pump sits, so it literally sits in the cat litter pan. When I notice standing water in the cat pan, it's time to get another pump.

Comments: Danner's Mag-Drive pumps have a reputation for being extremely reliable, and this is what made me decide to order my own. After seeing these pumps used in friends tanks for years without need for maintenance, and no issues arising with them, I can only assume they are quality products. My concern with the pump adding heat when ran submersed has not been realized, my tank is actually staying cooler even with this pump running.

Comments: This review is for the Mag drive Seven(700gph). All that needs to be said is WOW. This pump is great, I am building a new sump and this thing can pump. My head height from sump to top is 5.5 feet, but still this can put out some water.... My only concern is the vibration from the impeller. You might think its motor noise but rest asssured its just impeller vibration that you can easily fix with some isolation feet on bottom of the motor housing....great pump plan to by another...
