"Great Feeder"
- Product Review by Rudy Guerra

Comments: Have had the feeder going for about a week now and everything seems to work as it should. The food is staying dry and found out real quick that anything other than the smallest opening for feeding is too much if you feed small granular type food. I mixed granular food and some small flakes (manually crushed to smaller size) and used the 2nd smallest opening to feed and it was too much food dispensed....looked like it was snowing in my tank. I cut back to the smallest opening size and things have gone great so far. I only feed once a day on my 90 gallon tank with about 15 fish and corals. I do supplement live brine and sometimes frozen food every other day and everyone seems to be happy in the tank. I will be going on a 10 vacation and I pray that this feeder works while I'm gone. I will have someone check on my tank a few times while I'm gone, but I expect things to work well. I'm very happy and content with this feeder and would recommend it to anyone. Easy to set up the timer and the feeding times. The most impressive thing besides being well built is how dry the food stays. I don't plan to use it long term, just while I'm gone, but it is great to have.

Comments: Frendley user type feeder,
Accurate timer,
Took many trials to adjust the slider on the feed drum for proper quantity of food, but finaly got it right.I think that the volume of food in the feed drum has something to do with the amount comming out at each rotation. The more in the drum the more come out regardless of the slider adjustment,
The slider I think should be more stiffer,
Nevertheless I would rate this feeder 9/10
Good buy for the price paid.

Comments: Fish are much happier now that i feed them EVERY DAY! No more forgetting and my tank can stay on auto pilot when i leave town for a few days. Will not go without these now. I use pellts and have these feeders mounted in hood about 12 inch off water so pellets drop right in and dont float.

"Can't beat this for the price!"
- Product Review by Jeffery Kufalk
(Posted on 6/30/11)

Comments: I bought this as I wanted an auto-feeder for vacations and at least one consistent mid-day feeding. I use pellets and freeze-dried mysis. You have to play a little bit with the opening to get it just right. I'd recommend using a piece of tape to hold the opening in the right spot once you get it set. Also, for me, to get the right amount I use the 2 rotation setting with a smaller opening vice using 1 rotation on a larger opening.

I like the way the food churns to keep it mixed up and from clumping/clogging.

So far so good, my fish love it and it looks like this will work while we head off for a week or two.

Comments: I use this feeder when I have to be away for a few days. I tested it a week and it seemed to work fine.

Portions dropped into the tank were fairly even but moisture did collect on the outside of it causing some flakes to stick.

I would keep an eye on it as I wouldn't trust it for more than a few days without checking.

Comments: I have used several of these, and this is the only one I trust. I use it with New Life Spectrum, and it delivers 2 feedings spread a minute apart, 4 times a day. I second the opinion that you should use some tape on the food slider, as it has a tendency to slip and allow more food out than you would otherwise like. You can fill the hamper darn near full and leave your tank for weeks on end if your topoff and filtration can take it. Definately worth the money, especially for people who have fish requiring multiple feedings per day. I use it with a small floating feed square to make sure all the pellets drop into the tank. Also a good investment. Fish hover right underneath it.

Comments: So I bought this unit and filled it with small pellets for my fresh water tank. My fish were eating twice a day, once at 11am and again about 7pm. I'm sure they liked that!. If you fill the canister with pellets then the unit had a tendency to fall forward. It was great to see how smart my fish were. At about 6:30pm everyday you would see all of them hovering where the food was dropped. The food wasn't going to be dispensed for another 30 minutes but they somehow knew what was coming. It was great! The downside is that my fish eventually grew impatient. My freshwater Oscar would jump at the feeder because he could see the pellets in there. By jumping up into the feeder he did manage to knock a few pellets out that fell into the tank. I'm not sure how this would be with flakes, but with mini pellets it was awesome!

Comments: I purchased the Eheim Feed Air Auto Feeder just prior to a vacation. Shipping was fast, set up was also quick and easy. This feeder is easy to use and program. It feels sturdy and does not look out of place. Since returning from my trip, I have continued to use this feeder for daily feedings. The only advice I have is to make sure you crush your flaked food when you put it in the hopper or it will not come out. Overall, a good product at a fair price.

"Best feeder for adavanced keep"
- Product Review by Michael Milne
(Posted on 6/12/10)

Comments: I have been using this product at least 9 years on an unattended (in an office) 90 gallon reef. Tried many others. It is under a closed hood 3in from the water. It is by far the best feeder out there, but has some things to be aware of.

The mounting cups - throw them away as eventually they let go and the feeder goes in the water. I use velcro hot glued to tank support and feeder.

The clock is a bit of a pain to program but it is the only one that has a clock, I set the pump timer to shut off at the same time so everything isn't sucked into the overflow. Upto 4 settings per day is great.

The amount to dispense is tricky to get right, I use tape sometimes to get the slider opening right. Flake doesn't work very well as it clumps (being 3 inches above the water in my tank may be the problem.)

Generally, it is very tolerant of water except the timer LCD display - seal inside and out around the LCD edges with silicon unless you want to buy a new one every year.

The battery warning is usually mmissed because the display gets "wonky" after some moisture gets in. (still works it is just hard to read, and too hard for an event that always catches you by surprise.)

Is about 6 inches by 3 by 3 so it might be hard to mount on smaller than 75 gal tanks - Mounting included is simple cups to sit flat so needs a little creative work - but this is why this is a hobby!

"Just what I needed"
- Product Review by Skip Weening
(Posted on 4/13/10)

Comments: It took me almost a week to get it working, but that's because I didn't read through the entire setup instructions. If you don't set the number of turns, it doesn't do anything. Go Figure! I bought this to feed our fish while we go on vacation. I like the fact that it runs on battery power, so if the house power goes out, my settings aren't reset and I know the fish will be fed. Finding a place to position the feeder is not easy on a small tank, but I was able to get it to work.
Two things I found that I don't like are 1)when using flake food, you need to crumble it when you load the canister. A tedious and messy task but since I don't plan on using it all the time, not a big deal. 2)also with flake food, the feedings are not consistent. Depending on how the flakes are "stacked", some feedings will have more food than others. I'm guessing these will balance out over time.
Overall, I'm very happy with this feeder and I would recommend it.

Comments: I've been using my Eheim feeder since 2003 and couldn't be happier. With some minor DIY mdifications, I even connected it to a X10 module (UM506) and the feeder is now controlled by my Aquacontroller. The return pump turns off minutes before dispensing food, preventing the food from being swept into the overflow.

- Product Review by Manuel Cortes Jr.
(Posted on 8/16/09)

Comments: I have two units like this and I have found that these unit need to be redesigned when it come to the counter weight that is fitted on the battery cover because if you fill the food container up completely the unit tilts forward and not even the velco that is provided sticks correctly and the food than picks up all kind of moisture and sticks to the container not allowing the food to be dispense correctly. Aside from this small flause everything else seems to work ok. I would recommend this to a friend only if they had a way of securing the unit to the lid. one other thing is that they should of designed a way of connecting an air line to the unit so the food can stay dry.

Comments: Last weekend we went away and used our fish feeder for the first time. We did a trial run the day before and felt confident it was working as promised. This feeder works extremely well. We have a 29 gallon tank with a cover and a hole in the cover where the filter is inserted. There is a space next to the filter about 3 inches wide and that is plenty of room for the feeder to sit on the cover (attached with the small piece of velcro that is included)to rotate with each feeding. I love the peace of mind I now have when I go away that my fish will be happy and fed. I highly recommend this feeder.

Comments: I had an unfortunate experience while cleaning my apartment. I wasn't watching what I was doing and knocked my Eheim into the tank and all was lost. It had previously been programmed by my serviceman, he wasn't due back for two weeks and I panicked. I went on-line, ordered, received it right away and looked at the instructions. Simplicity incarnate! Easiest piece of "machinery" ever to program. I love the Eheim 3581 and so do my fish!

Comments: I own two of these units feeding a 20G & 60G tanks. These units have been operating now, with out flaw, for 1 year. I do have to admit that positioning these units is problematic. The 20G I used double-sided velcro strips, several of them mounted to the rear of the hood. Mounting in 60G was a challenge as the hood is home made with wood. Luckly the hood is 6 inches high. I was able to screw in a stainless steal soap dish, lying horizontal, to the inside of the hood. Then I straped the Eheim on top with a zip-tie. The zip-tie is used for added security. These Eheim units are in use 100% of the time & I use with flake and pellets with out any problems.

Comments: I bought this device so that my wife and I could go away for the holiday season and not have to worry about getting someone to come over to our place to feed the fish. I set it up a couple days before we left to make sure it was working well, and we came back to a happy fish! In fact, I just left it on the tank because it is so much easier than having to remember to feed the fish everyday. It was easy to program and set up for feeding amount. I would highly recommend this device to anyone.

Comments: Pros: The fish get fed when I am away. I found it easy to setup and easy to program. The unit is well made.

Cons: Would be nice if some mechanism for mounting the unit was provided. I ended up using velco. The stops on the food outlet opening need to be finer and have more positive stops. It is easy either open it too much or accidentally close it too much. Also would like finer adjustment of the food opening. I use small pellets and was either getting too much or too little. I had to work to carefully find a mid point, which does not have a stop. The cover for the food holder is also not as secure as it should be.

Comments: Best auto-feeder I've tried. I love that it can feed 4 times per day at any time; actually 8 times since the 4 can be set to "double feed" after a minute. Sees very reliable after 6 months, no trouble.

Only minor complaints: I dropped one in the water and it died. Also, like all feeders that pour flakes on the surface, the fish have to be quick to get them before they go over the overflow; hand feeding is still ideal.

"Very Frustrating"
- Product Review by Deanna Schnepp
(Posted on 7/2/08)
-
Comments: I may have just gotten a "lemon" of the automatic fish feeder units, but I have had so many problems in the last hour that it's taken me with this unit that I'm ready to drown it in my aquarium. Setting of the functions were easy enough to understand and set, but the battery backing on my unit will not stay closed no matter what I do-- at the moment I have a hairband holding it closed because I"m leaving for vacation tomorrow and don't have time to return it! Every time it pops off, it produces a "LO" battery reading, and then dies, meaning I have to set ALL the feeding times over again. The mounting velcro that it comes with could not be cheaper-- the double sided tape that's supposed to connect the velcro to the aquarium top and the unit barely connects to the velcro itself and separates as soon as it's tested for it's security. I'm so frustrated that I spent $60 on this stupid feeder and it probably will die the day after I leave anyhow. AGH!

Comments: Good unit, but difficult to mount, cannot tolerate more than a few days under peripheral MH or PC light before circuit board/LED goes nuts, eventually craps out; lasted 3 months... But frequent feeding anthias got fat on a mix of 4 different foods, tangs getting mix of little squares of seeweed & coral getting dried planton 4x daily. All tank residents happier & healthier. Just need to put powerheads on sync timer, feeding ring to prevent filtering away food & filter sock to keep tank clean. This feeder is money well spent in a reef system.

"Eheim Feeder Easy to Use"
- Product Review by Justin Briggs
(Posted on 2/14/08)

Comments: The Eheim Feed Air Automatic Feeder is easy to use, easy to program, and easy to install in almost any tank. Digital timer makes for accurate activation and works well when used in conjunction with timer controlled circulation pumps. Food stays dry and can accomodate a wide variety of flake or pellet food. A setting allows feeder to dispense food twice during a single feeding at a 1 minute interval, which allows the the slower feeders to arrive after the Chromis and Anthias have sped away with the first wave of food. Works very well.

Comments: This is one of those products that just plain works as described. I have it dispensing Tetra Crisps to my Cichlid tank and have it hanging over an open tank (set on top of a Penguin Em 400). If figured if it hasn't clogged from humidity in two weeks, it isn't going to. The fill cap is a little tough to pull off, and I suggest slightly crumbling your flake food. I throw in about 25% Cyclo-peeze and have a great combo feed. Really would like to see a bit more clear cut stops for the ratched opening ridges. It would be nice to be able to snap it into place and count the number of bumps you go over while opening it. Not a problem and not enough to cause it to lose an Excellent rating.

Comments: I used the feeder while I was away for 10 days, after watching it dispense for a few days. Upon returning it did not appear that enough food had been dispensed. I monitored it and the cylinder seems to stick about 3/4 through the turn. It does not return to the upright position. I will put fresh batteries in it and try it again in hopes that I will be able to use it for extended periods. I found programming it a bit confusing but finally figured that out.

"Solved the one problem"
- Product Review by Gary Dodge
(Posted on 6/12/07)

Comments: I always had problems with the mounting...needs to sit on a horizontal surface. Some (most!) tanks just don't have a horizontal surface. Even on my tanks that have a suitable center brace, I never felt comfortable that it wasn't going to get knocked into the water.

I bought some specimen cups with lids to support the feeder just outside the tank. Still seemed flaky (excuse the pun). The final (and most excellent!) solution was to strap the base unit to the eggcrate with the hopper over 3x3 hole cut into the eggcrate. (one cable tie just below the LED display and another just above the manual feed button. Safe, secure and still have access to batteries!

One other hint...position the large Ocean Nutrition feeding station (MarineDepot Item Code: ON1151) just below to keep floating foods from racing to the overflow.
