"Hydor Koralia Evolution"
- Product Review by Rick Cross
(Posted on 8/19/12)

Comments: I have a 55 gal reef tank that was a freshwater tank for years. After a long time searching for the correct wave maker on the cheap i found the smart wave. The first time i installed it i had 2 550 evo's. This was not enough water movement so i bought two 750's. That made a world of difference to the water movement. Hydor makes some very good products that i would recommend to anyone on a budget and just starting out to the hobby.

Comments: I got a 1050 gph and a 550 gph just to change the current level in my tank. They seem to be producing a nice current in my 46g bowfront, my only complaint would be the clicking noise when the cut on but other than that they're great.

Comments: Wow, I just put two of these babies in my 100 gallon reef tank. Excellent pumps for the money, they are quiet and move lots of water around the tank, I get excellent water movement throughout the tank, best of all my SPS and LPL corals seem a lot happier then with my Marineland powerheads. Highly recommended!

Comments: Super product; looks good works even better! Corals love the extra flow and the design of the impeller distributes water flow in a somewhat random pattern, no need for an expensive wave generation controller. I have 2 - 750's and a 1050 in my 100 gallon bow-front tank.

Comments: This pump is so great, so quiet. I bought it for 20g tank standard.. after reading google, its too strong for me.. I had to switch my pump to 425 which is cheaper and still good. 750 is too strong for 20g standard, will move your sands oneside to other.

"Great wavemaker pumps"
- Product Review by Joseph Persico
(Posted on 7/5/12)
-
Comments: I bought two of these to use on my Reef Keeper Lite wave maker. They work great and are quiet. Some people complain about hearing them click when they start but the only noise I hear is the water rushing out. I'm very happy with this pump. I have other Koralia pumps and have never had a problem with them. I hope some day they make a rotating head for them. That would turn them from great pumps to excellent ones.

"Not so good"
- Product Review by John Zillmer
(Posted on 6/21/12)
-
Comments: I've owned an Evolution 750 for a bit over a year, and it has failed three times - one bad bushing, one rusted magnet, and one snapped screen cover clip. Hydor has, to their credit, sent out replacement parts each time. Still, I run a few of the original Koralias that are five years old that never had a problem. Flow was stronger and more customizable on the original design, too. Too bad they don't make the old style any longer.

"clicks when used with a timer"
- Product Review by Michael Sebranek
(Posted on 4/27/12)
-
Comments: One major problem with this powerhead is that when used with a wavemaker/timer it makes very loud clicking noises. With multiple pumps running and going off and on all day it really sucks. That aside the flow is great, the mount is very strong and when running it is quieter than the 1200's.

- Product Review by Hendrick Vilacha
(Posted on 4/27/12)

Comments: I just got the 750 one in the mail today and installed it in my 20G long. It's bigger than I had thought and it pushes a good amount of water and there's flow pretty much everywhere. I have it aimed at the top to break the water and that it certainly does. I bought it to add more flow to my tank and I ended up removing my 425 one. For the price it's a pretty good pump.

"Great Until it Stopped...."
- Product Review by Richard Eberheim
(Posted on 12/18/11)

Comments: Great powerhead good circulation, even purchased a larger 2nd one. Sometimes it would start up reversed. I would play with un-plugging a few times to restart. Maybe a lot of restarts. I had this for just over 1 year and I liked the flow, setup included mount magnet, looked good, until is STOPPED DEAD!The internal magnet looks like it swelled and now it will not spin in the bore. It was jammed, and to take it apart had to pull. Not a powerhead I will buy again, this should not happen in 1 year??Deep Blue

- Product Review by Jerry Sy
(Posted on 12/13/11)

Comments: I already use two Koralia Evolution pumps and bought two more to completely switch to all Koralias in my tank (to replace tunzes). I get a nice wide flow pattern using 4 koralias at a small fraction of the cost of a vortech. I do hear a click when they turn on, but any pump will make a sound when starting from rest. Overall, I am satisfied with the koralia evolution pumps.

"koralia evolution 1400"
- Product Review by Colin Martin
(Posted on 11/30/11)
-
Comments: I bought two of the koralia evolution 1400's and attatched them to the koralia wavemaker controller. The pumps are very quiet (quietter than my two sicce pumps). The flow is strong but gentle. At a ten second interval time, they definitely move the water and my soft corals but not to the extent of the much more expensive eotechs. I have a 36 x24x24 90 gallon tank. I put one on each side. The only complaint I have is when the pump starts and stops there is a small click from the sudden start and stop. With that said, the click does not appear to make the fish jump, corals close or cause any disturbance in the tank. For the price it is a deal that cannot be beat. I will be interested to see in the long run how the pumps hold up to the abusive start and stop. Koralia states they made these pumps for their wavemaker system so they should be fine... i hope.

- Product Review by Mike Mccalla
(Posted on 11/6/11)

Comments: Well not too much can be back about powerheads besides maybe a noise issue or problems staying mounted but I have been running the Hydor for about 8 months now and still going strong, silent as a ninja, and mounts nicely, I would say it's a little pricy comparing the new maxijets put out about the same gph and for only 25$ and it has been running in my tank since also so you really are paying for the cool design of the Hydor but a very good powerhead.

"A little big for my liking"
- Product Review by Jerry Hague
(Posted on 10/26/11)

Comments: I ordered 2 of the Hydor Evolution 550s to replace my Koralia model 1's. When they arrived the first thing I noticed is how big these pumps are! They are larger then my older Koralia 1's. I am putting them in my 34G red sea max. Unfortunately they are to big for my reef set up. I did manage to squeeze them in and hook them up to my reef controller wave maker function. the flow is a bit much for my tank but if they had a further distance to travel in a larger tank these would have nice flow to them. The other issue is they claim to be good for wave maker controllers. Mine make a clunk noise each time they start up...hearing that every 30 seconds is annoying. it sounds like a rock is falling from inside the tank. I am pulling these out today and going to order the 425's instead and give them a shot. hopefully they are quieter.

"Can Not Ask for much More"
- Product Review by Barry Brown
(Posted on 10/7/11)
-
Comments: I am running this pump on a 215 freshwater set up. The pluses are that is quiet, smooth, relatively easy to set up and rated well (for 1050gph). Draw backs are the cord could be a little longer if you want to position the pump near the bottom of your tank (my tank is 30" on a high stand). Also one of the neat benefits can also be a draw back, The pump has small bands that hold it to the suction cup/magnet. When you are setting the pump up these can be a little cumbersome. Once set up the pump is FLAWLESS. Customer Service also did a fantastic job matching it up with my needs. There tech department is top notch!!!!

Comments: This pump does exactly what it says it is going to do. It pushes water and it is a strong current in my 70 gallon. If you have a dead spot it will do the trick and it is almost silent. The magnet is extremely strong. My local aquarium warehouse uses these powerheads in there tanks salt and fresh, so it must be reliable. I have no complaints.

Comments: I recently bought 2 Hydor Koralia Evolution 750's for better circulation in my 40 gal breeder reef tank and I cannot be more pleased with this product. The price was great and shipping was super fast as always. The pumps are a breeze to position with the magnetic mounts and to adjust with the ball joint. They are super quiet and push alot of water! The corals perked right up and love the stronger currents created by these pumps on a wavemaker. I've used several other Hydor Koralia circ heads for years now without a problem. Great product!

"Great Evo"
- Product Review by Andrew Harris
(Posted on 5/20/11)
-
Comments: I bought 2 750's when I saw the Koralia Smart Wave demo. Since the smart wave wont be here until about August, I got these in preparation. They are clean and quiet and move a great deal of water more diversly than my previous power head a maxi-jet 1200. The pivot ball construction allow for wide array of positions. Evo pumps are good and I am very pleased with the purchase , I look forward to using them in conjucntion with the smartwave wavemaker, my only concern, or would like to see explored is the design to move the power cord outside the tank like the vortech, the magnetic mount is great, but would have an even cleaner look if they could evolve the technology to an external wire configuration. 72 Gal BowMag 9 return 2 750 Evo's

"Still noisy"

Comments: I bought these because they are supposed to be the 'new' design, and 'timer' friendly. They do move a lot of water for the money. But using an Apex controller to have these go on and off is a constant click/clunk sound all day long. I turn them off when I go to bed, it's really that loud (this is a large house). They are extremely annoying.

"Loud Annoying Clicking"
- Product Review by Stephen Wilkins
(Posted on 3/11/11)

Comments: If you plan to use these powerheads without a wavemaker then look no futher, they are good. They are extremely large though, in a 36" Long 2 of these are a distraction to the rest of the tank. While running they are extremely quiet and they have great range of motion and a stong magnetic connection. I'd give them 4 stars if I ran them without wavemaker.
<br />
<br />A lot of us like to run or would like to run 2+ powerheads on a wavemaker. For this function these powerheads fail miserably because of a very loud and consistent clicking noise they make whenever they start. If you have 2 pumps on a 1 minute interval, that means every minute you are going to hear a click. Don't even think about a shorter interval with these powerheads. The click is about what you would hear if you were 6-7ft away from someone dropping a golfball on tile from about 2 feet. It's not really loud, but it's the pitch that is very noticable and annoying.
<br />
<br />It's funny that the Evolution line is touted as being a great upgrade from the old Koralias b/c of their ability to be run on a controller. Unfortunately they fail at doing a good job of running on a controller due to the clicking noise they produce on startup.
<br />
<br />Note: The clicking comes from the magnetic shaft slamming into the metal bushing on startup, after startup there is very minimal noise.
<br />
<br />Hydor Customer Service gets a 5 out of 5.

"Evolution 50/50 success"
- Product Review by Randy Hale

Comments: I Bought two units for my 90 gal reef wavemaker. A distinct difference between them. One is as quiet as you please while the other makes an audible "clunk" sound every time it starts up. Its been installed for 4 days now. I had hoped it would "break-in" and quiet down, but so far it's still annoying. I can hear it from 20 feet away. It often spooks my fish. That isn't what I was going for. Beyond that, the other one works as advertised and my corals seam to love the irregular wave action now employed. I may consider returning one unit and trying again.

"Strong Flow, Only 6 Watts!"
- Product Review by Christina Mccall
(Posted on 3/9/11)

Comments: I recently purchased two Koralia Evolution 1400 powerheads to replace an older K3 and K4. The Evolution series is a big improvement! Much smaller overall, more powerful, no more metal shaft for the impeller. The suction cup / magnet attachment is also improved, making me more confident the powerheads will not slip, even with a thick acrylic aquarium. The best part is that the Evolution only uses 6 watts of power!

"Clicking"

Comments: I recently purchased both the 750 and 1050 powerheads to use with the Apex Aquacontoller. Both units make an extremely loud clicking noise when they start up. They are silent while running, and they seem to be made well. However, they clicking noise upon startup can be heard in other rooms. Very annoying while trying to watch TV.

"Love it!"

Comments: I love this pump! I've been using Koralia pumps of varying size for quite a while, so I'm very familiar with them. They're high output for their electrical consumption, extremely easy to position and direct circulation where you want, quiet as can be, and extremely affordable. They're also very easy to clean (marine powerheads get slimy filthy in a hurry - this is important). I highly recommend ALL Hydor Koralia power heads.

Comments: Just what I needed for my 75g. After installing, I was able to see a nice circular flow from one end of tank to the other. Of course it is coupled with a Koralia 1050. Plus it is very quiet.

Comments: I have used Koralia's from K3 to Magnum 5. I like these pumps. The 1400 are quiter than my old version and look more stream lined. Good power heads to move water.

Comments: I bought two of the 1050 for my 90 gallon, and man do they work awesome!!! I think I am gonna buy a wavemaker for them as they really kick out the flow, and I think they would be an excellent choice for some alternating flow.

"Koralia Evolution 1400gpm"
- Product Review by Kyle Heike
(Posted on 10/12/10)

Comments: I have had my 60G for 3-4 years. I have a Magnum 7 which pushes water through my chiller and out main returns, a nano koralia below those to stir the bottom of the tank and now the Koralia 4 which is much more powerful than expected. The pump is smaller that the previous model I replaced, and produces much more flow (better design). I have a 60G uniquarium and it has introduced so much more current that my fish are learning to swim all over again...which I think is funny. They used to know exactly where to swim to catch food, but now it's all over the place. It looks as though the fish and plant life do not mind the extra flow so I would purchase again in a heartbeat! If you have a smaller tank, it may be too much for fish/corals be cautious...

"great powerhead"
- Product Review by Melissa Dickard
(Posted on 10/7/10)
-
Comments: I put this in my 90 reef and plugged it in to my wavemaker. It is creating great movement around the tank. My goal was to have turbulence, not waves and it is doing a wonderful job in concert with my 3other koralias. The powerhead is quiet and really puts out a nice volume of water. Very pleased. Shipping, as always was on time and well done.

Comments: Evo 750 is perfect. Zero noise. zero problems. The magnet is very strong. You can move it from the outside of tank. I have this next to a normal style head and my fish hate the normal head and play in the current of the Evo. Buying another for sure.

Comments: Received this quickly and well packaged. Set it up, plugged it in and the circulation pump works great. I put it in my 125 Gal aquarium for my oscars and it keeps most of the refuse from hitting the bottom. This in turn allows my 3 filters to pick it up and help keep the tank even cleaner. Great Product.

"New and improved"
- Product Review by Steven Rhodes
(Posted on 9/29/10)
-
Comments: I had to try the the new Koralia's and they definitely have a smaller footprint in the tank compared to my previous ones and on the startup they don't make the clunky noise as the previous models do. I got the 750gph and my tank is a saltwater fish/reef 70G Tall and my water movement has greatly improved but then I did as the representative suggested and have them set up at opposite corners and my clove polyps are probably moving too much. Highly recommend!!!!!!

"Great pump"
- Product Review by Wesley Brower
(Posted on 9/23/10)

Comments: I have used the first generation of Koralia pumps before, so I wasn't shocked by the performance, however, the flow doesn't seem to be 1050 gph in comparison to the older #3 model that pushed 850 gph I believe. Maybe its the way the impeller is designed now, but it still moves a water effectively, just doesn't feel as wide of a push as the older ones. I will say that the noise from vibration is much quieter and only adds a small bit of extra length inside the tank from the wall.

"Evo 1050"
- Product Review by Mike Donegan
(Posted on 9/23/10)

Comments: This is the perfect pump for surface movement across my 5 foot 110 gallon Mbuna tank. I was looking to increase the oxygenation in my tank by creating surface agitation and this was definately the ticket. Combined with the flow my FX5 creates, I haven't had any debris/poop to manually remove from the rocks or sandy bottom of my tank since installing this combination. In addition to total satisfaction with the pump, pricing from Marine Depot was the best and the shipping was extremely fast. I am now a future customer.
