Iwaki MD20RLT Water Pump (Japanese Motor) Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

Magnetic water pumps. Magnetic driven. Sealess pumps for use on fresh or saltwater aquariums. Low heat exchange and quiet in operation. Highly durable design. WMD pumps have American Made Motors. MD pumps have Japanese Made Motors. RLT pumps are for pressure applications. RLXT pumps are for circulation and wet/dry return.

Iwaki Walchem magnetic drive pumps will run longer, quieter and cooler than any traditional mag drive. Extraordinarily high efficiencies make WMD & MD the clear choice in almost every process, recirculation or transfer application.

Unique internal Cooling Circuit
Creates a positive, forced cooling path, lubricating bearing surfaces and actively purging gases & heat. Unique double bearing system allows cooling circuit liquid to continually "wash" front and rear radial bearings, extending bearing life.

Precision Tolerances
Pumps can be supplied with alumina ceramic or SiC spindles, bored, turned and highly polished. This precision machined spindle forms the center of the driven magnet. Substantially reduced hydraulic noise is a major feature of all WMD/MD impellers. Great pains are taken in the molding/finishing process to eliminate tangential misalignment.

Bearings/Thrust surfaces
High lubricity fluoropolymer bearings minimize mechanical losses typical of conventional mag drive pumps. High purity SiC radial bearings handle the most aggressive ultrapure chemistries. PTFE front thrust surface aids hydraulic balance and minimizes flashing. Large rear thrust surface guards against axial forces caused by cavitation or gas entrapment.

Drive magnet
Dynamically balanced barium ferrite drive magnets provide best magnet torque. Die cast magnet carrier creates a flywheel effect, which adds to the magnet safety factor.

Motor matching
Offering more standard motor/pump configurations than other manufacturers offer for tailored pump applications. Premium, high efficiency motors are used throughout the line. Totally enclosed, permanent split capacitor motors are compact, cool and economical. Tolerance to voltage variation without overheating and 50/60 Hz operation allow the product to be used in a worldwide market.

Comments: The pump is sufficient to operate the Bullet skimmers as described, even with 2+' head height. The negative is that the pump is loud, very loud. louder than two reeflow pumps combined....

Comments: Friendly place to place your orders, as I remmember my first order was back in 2004 or so, never missed any parts and always receive the next day(cool stuff ah!). This Iwaki is the second one I order from them, my first was MD20RLXT (ordered in 2007), excellent pumping so quite that could even sleep next to the tank (sometimes), and is very powerful for my Red Sea Max. The only thing that it didn't come with the cord but that's fine, I was not smart to find a part (Home Depot) with swicth to attach the pump cord to outlet, after a while, the salt water ran into the swicth without my notices and ruin my pump that I didn't even know. so this time, very simple, use my extra PC cord and leave the connection at high ground, that is it (take me only 15 minutes to complete)and it is now running beautiful but I'm still missing the Iwaki MD20RLXT (this is the one, buddies).

"Solid Pump" - Product Review by Jason Dykert (Posted on 1/31/12)

Great!

Comments: I used to have a Little Giant 4MD and it was a powerful and quiet pump. Not as powerful as this Iwaki, but much quieter. Iwaki makes a good pump with minimal head loss and it will last a long time, but they advertise them as quiet. The magnetic drive makes a constant high pitch noise, somewhat like a vacuum cleaner. I had to use sound dampening foam on the inside of my cabinet to deaden the noise - which really worked for the room. Now it's quieter than the air pump. Before I bought the Iwaki, I tried a Reeflo Snapper, it isn't very powerful, but it was VERY quiet.

All in all I would recommend the Iwaki if you need to push water through a bunch of equipment underneath the tank and want good tank water turnover. It circulates the water very well, much more water movement than either of the other two pumps I mentioned.

Comments: Over the years after using other pumps (little giant, Mag, Dolphin) driving a 90 gal with sump and skimmer, I was looking for a pump that would do the work without all the associated noise.

Comments: THE JAPANESE PUMPS ARE SECOND TO NONE. I have had 3 55rlt running 24-7 for over 13 years and besides the once a year acid bath and a dust blowout, flawless. If you need the flow and you think this is not just a passing hobby. DO NOT THINK ABOUT THE PRICE there Worth every penny. just buy them.

"Substantial but noisy" - Product Review by Winfield Wagner (Posted on 11/16/11)

Great!

Comments: This is a solid pump. It is heavy, and it moves massive amounts of saltwater. The idea that this pump is "quiet" has the ring of marketing spin. If you plan on having this item in the same zipcode as people, plan on laying in some noise absorbing materials. I had to go to the local pro audio store to get the same foam they use for recording studios.

Would buy this pump again? Sure. It's great, but take the warnings about noise seriously. This is not a trivial issue.

Comments: I'm replacing an American motor wmd-20rlxt. This pump runs much hotter. I can hold my hand on it for about 5 seconds before pulling away. When I first hooked it up, I thought, "Wow! It is silent!" That night I noticed a buzzing I didn't notice with the ambient daytime noises. I put more rubber under the motor and that did help some. This pump isn't pumping much more than my 20rlxt did.

Comments: Well, after 10 years, on my 240Gal reef, I have now replaced every pump "twice" except the Iwaki MD 70!. At first I remember saying it was to loud, but after 10 years, I can also say that all external pumps I have used get louder with age ... not the Iwaki. I keep on replacing my skimmer pump (my skimmer is 6 ft tall, so, the pump larger than the return pump).. as the iwaki is expensive, but I can assure you replacing a pump is a pain in the .... So, after that I can say the iwaki (jap) is the best pump I have owned. I'm giving it 5 stars, for reliability, and performance, that mean a lot more than price over a 5-10yr period.

Great!

Comments: Have used Iwaki on my 135 gallon reef as a return for pump 7 years. Pump was going strong but I felt that it was probably reaching the end of its life. I purchased the MD70RLT to add some pressure and speed to the return. I also am fighting a 5' head. So far so good on this pump. It has plenty of flow and I am having to gate it down using a valve. I would have given 5 stars but it is a little louder than most pumps i have used. Love the quality though. Highly recommend.

"Iwaki MD" - Product Review by Ron Brost (Posted on 9/15/09)

Excellent!

Comments: I bought this as an eventual replacement for an existing Iwaki MD20 pump that has been running continuously since 2002. My 75gal overflow aquarium and 20gal deep sand refugium depend exclusively on the Iwaki pump for circulation, filtration, and aeration so if the pump dies, my tank would be dead in no time. I figured after seven years the original Iwaki might give up any decade now so I wanted to be prepared. I went with the Japanese motor since I heard that they were more reliable. Cheap insurance, excellent pump. Quiet, too.

"Super Efficient!" - Product Review by Stephen Dyer (Posted on 6/15/09)

Great!

Comments: The MD series pumps are definitely the best. I've owned the MD20 and MD30s in the past and they are super quiet. The MD40RXT I just got does make some noise due to the fact it has a fan built-into the end of the motor. The fan keeps the pump extremely cool and definitely helps keep the heat from transferring to the water. I checked this pump on my kill-a-watt meter and it only draws 76 watts. this is amazing when you compare the watts to GPH ratio of this pump to other pumps.

I'm only giving this pump 4 stars due to the fact it does make some noise. The MD20s and MD30s definitely get 5 stars.

Comments: This is my second Iwaki MD40RLXT Water Pump. First one lasted about 5 years until it developed a mild humming noise that became to load and the pump had to be replaced. If the pump had not been in the living room would have ignored the pump noise since the pump still worked great. The first 5 years the pump was the quietest I had ever had. Just ordered another and looking forward to another 5 years of quiet operation.

Comments: I have been using the Iwaki MD Water Pump Japanese Motor since 1991. The Japanese made motor is far superior to the USA made motor. The original ran for 7 years , shutting down only for partial water changes and feeding.
You can see I am very happy with this pump. The one I ordered from you is for a back up.

Comments: I replaced a Little Giant pump with this Iwaki pump on my closed loop because of the noise criteria. I had an Iwaki as my main filtration pump and when running closed loop with Little Giant there was a very noticable difference. Little Giant performed the same but with considerable more amount of noise.
Iwaki appears to generate less heat as well, I notice my chiller does not run as much.

Comments: This pump rocks. I've been using the Poseidon PS3 this pump is great and super quiet but kept bringing excessive heat like 5 degrees added to my tank. Since i bought the Iwaki i'll never look back to another pump again. Now my chiller goes on only when my metal halides come on. Before my chiller would be on 24/7. Iwaki is the best enough said..

Comments: Running this for a 90 gallon sump return to a 210 gallon main tank. Has been operational for a year. Hard piped with pad for support. Quiet operation certainly no more noise than the Tunze 6100's in the tank. Zero heat transfer from this pump. Cannot hear pump at all while running in living room environment. Clean down once per 4 months.

Comments: I replaced my somewhat noisy American motor Iwaki with this Japanese motor version and am pleased with the reduction in noise level. I had two American motor Iwakis in the tank, and only one of them was noisy, so it may be just chance that one of the American ones was noisy. The Japanese motor one also has a smaller footprint, which was helpful in my setup. Really nice pump.

"Replace a Panworld" - Product Review by David Gregg (Posted on 11/30/07)

Excellent!

Comments: This Iwaki pump has been purchased to replace a Panworld pump that I have run for a little more than a year. I am using this pump for a main system pump on a 210 gallon reef. My system dropped 4 degrees in three days after installing this new Iwaki pump. After two weeks it has run in and is even quieter than when new. The Panworld pump that I had saved me about $60.00 and cost me about $400.00 in lost livestock, diminished anemonies, and lost corals due to an overheated tank. Again I learn to buy the best the first time.

Comments: Tried the Mag Drive first for my 180 Gal tank and it was very noisey (couldn't sleep with the tank in the other room...tried insulating the cabinet...still loud). Then I tried the "QuietOne", that was even worse! I finally tried the Iwaki (Japanese Motor) and I can finally sleep at night. I am VERY impressed with the low noise...only a little hum. It shipped quickly. Since MarineDepot was effortless to buy from, I just ordered the AquaController III. (I'll let you know how it goes).
