"Great Idea, Poor Quality"
- Product Review by Lisa Gladstone

Comments: The idea for this light is excellent. However, the quality of the bulb was very lacking. Went through two seperate light systems and experienced the same bulb burn out with in days of installation. On the bright side (no punn intended) the Customer Service staff was superb in accepting returns for both lights!!!

"Stop! Do Not Buy for Macro Al."
- Product Review by Bs Sb
(Posted on 1/29/12)

Comments: Cool light concept, may work for some applications...However, does not work for what the title targets. After my macro died using the JBL, purchased a 6500k led (150 watt equiv.), kept two strands and now have macro growing like crazy. The JBJ Macro-Gro is not bright enough, never will be, even the "25 watt".

Comments: This is a well built and versatile product. However the bulb went out and stopped working after four days. I would still recommend this product to a friend. I put this light on my CPR HOB refugium that is hanging on my 14 gallon biocube.

"Nice light."

Comments: In any other case, I would have gladly given it 5 stars because it's an outstanding product that's easy to find a place for and works extremely well. I was left a bit disappointed that the light bulb that came with it burnt out after about a week and I had to purchase a replacement for $15. So far so good. I'm really hoping it stays reliable.

"Great Deal"
- Product Review by Juan Martinez
(Posted on 10/22/11)

Comments: Product works as promised. Decent all plastic design (its not ballistic grade plastic or anything heavy duty) helps keep the weight down and low chances of salt water damaging the product. I do wish there where more swivel points. Does a great job of keeping the light from shining up where its not needed.

"Pretty good light with issues"
- Product Review by Biff Droddy
(Posted on 3/9/11)

Comments: The light actually works great. The problem is the application I need it for on my JBJ 28gallon nano cube with HQI lights. I have the light on one side of the back and two fans on the other, which leaves very little room for my Tunze 9002 protein skimmer. I wish I would have spent the extra 40 dollars and bought the magnet leds that hang on the back glass and I would have any issues. I am saving for it and I will just replace this one when the bulb goes out with the hang on back. If you have a refugium under your tank then this is a great product for it because you can swivel the light in different directions if you need to get it out of your way.

"Almost!"
- Product Review by Kenneth Greenstein
(Posted on 10/30/10)

Comments: After replacing the light I was using with this small overall footprint, I thought the manufacturer had finally come up with the perfect refugium fixture. Well they are close, but the fixture is still missing additional swivel points. I wanted to mount this on the rear middle cabinet tank support, got that done, but when I tried to swivel it over the tank, the joints only allow up and down but not left to right, so I can not really put it over the refugium to grow my cheato. Somewhat disappointing as I will now try to modify the back of my stand so I can get the light mounted correctly for my application. I would reccommend this to my friends depending on the application they intend to use this for.

"Cost effective product"
- Product Review by Gerard Larios
(Posted on 10/10/10)

Comments: Negative:
There is no cover for the bulb area which could lead to salt creep issues. Keeping it far enough from the water level should alleviate, however.

Positives:
Good construction suitable for using with a refugium. Highly adjustable so that you can fit it over your refugium in any number of positions. With the 6500K bulb my chaeto is already responding.

I've used similar products from others and this is definitely the best solution I've come across and am glad I purchased.

"Of course it's plastic"
- Product Review by Zack Duckett
(Posted on 9/30/10)

Comments: I've read some reviews of this product complaining that it's made of mostly plastic. Duh, it's sitting over open salt water 24/7 of course you want as little metal involved as possible not only to reduce corrosion but also to reduce weight. I've seen quite a DIY refugium lighting systems and while they might be effective it's normally a raw socket hanging over water (dangerous) and it looks like total garbage. This product is at least designed to protect from splash damage, does the job, and actually looks profession while doing it. Very nice product.

"So far, so good!"
- Product Review by Greg Ledford
(Posted on 7/11/10)

Comments: I use this light over my refugium but since I've heard so many issues with the bulb, I've got a small plexiglass cover over the refugium and the light shines down through it. It works perfectly and keeps the light from getting salt creep build-up and protects the electrical components. Very glad I made the purchase and I'm getting exactly what I wanted from this fixture: grow lighting without added heat.

"Back Again"
- Product Review by Richard D Robbins
(Posted on 5/11/10)

Comments: I tried one of these fixtures at beginning of the year (as a trial) for a planted freshwater nano tank, and have been extremely pleased with the results. The orignial Macro-Glo turned out to be a great little fixture (compact, good spread/dispersion of light, and cosmetically pleasing to the eye). I decided to switch out two other planted nanos that were using square pin CFL fixtures, opting instead to use the Macro-Glo's (because of their positive aspects).

On The Plus Side:
1. Because I have open top tanks, the compact design, along with "all" the possible configurations for height adjustments, provide easy access for maintenance tasks.
2. No ballast needed on the fixture.
3. Set-up/installation is a 'no-brainer' and painless.
4. Replacement bulbs are more economical than most cfl bulbs.
*** Was able to use a 26w GE spiral 6500K helix base cf screw-in by reshaping the fixture's reflector slightly.

On The Negative Side:
1. You can not buy the fixture without the JBJ bulb included.
2. The cost of the fixture could be considered a bit on the 'pricey side'.

All in all, a lot more positives than negatives. I personally think the JBJ Macro-Glo is a great light (well built, easy to install, good adjustment features, adequate light spread, cosmetically-pleasing design, and easy to modify with other screw-in cf bulbs).

Comments: I wasn't aware by looking at the pictures that the bulb has no glass protecting it from possible salt spray. Will have to see what happens. I have the bulb about 8" over the water. Clamp is very adjustable.

"Nice Nano Light"
- Product Review by Richard Robbins Jr
(Posted on 2/28/10)

Comments: I'm using this light fixture on a 10" planted, freshwater, rimless, acrylic cube. Installation was painless. This light (with adjustable height) provides plenty of clearance when performing maintenance tasks. It has a very good spread, and the bulb is definitely bright... providing the needed requirements for my plants. I have read past reviews about this fixture with comments about cheap materials and plastic screws. Personally, I find the materials to be of good quality. The screws in the adjustment arms are metal (not plastic) - adjustment screws for the clamping devise are made of plastic (which I have not encountered any problems with: they hold the fixture onto the tank wall very securely). All in all, I would definitely recommend JBJ's Macro-Glo adjustable refugium light. It is a very good clamp-on light if you do not require "mega" lighting. I have ordered a second one for an 11" planted cube.

"Nice fixture, bad bulb"
- Product Review by Raffaele Dilallo
(Posted on 12/24/09)

Comments: I liked how the light clamps onto the top of my refugium and the fact that it swivels to where you want it. Could be a little better constructed for the money. After about a week of useage, the bulb burned out. Now I either have to find a replacement bulb, or if I can't find it easily, I'm asking for a refund. I would rate it about 4 stars if the light hadn't burned out. I don't like being inconvenienced and now I have to scramble to get another light before my macro algae withers away.

Comments: I attached mine to a 2.5 gallon nano colony tank. It didn't work with the custom cut acrylic cover I had, so I left off the cover and went to class. When I came back, the screw had slipped out of the arm and the light collapsed into my tank. Nothing died, but the light is broken.

"Great light, poor parts"
- Product Review by Andy Cheng
(Posted on 7/11/09)
-
Comments: I bought this light to get some additional light into my refugium. The result is immediate. Once I bought this and leave it on for 24/7, macro algae doulbed in only 2 weeks! Thus, the macro-algae loves this light and export a lot of excessive nutrient in the tank. After leaving this on for about 2+ months, the bulb just died! Worst of all, I can't find the replacement part from here and you can't use any bulb you find in the hardware store because the light spectrum is different. I will contact their support soon and hopefully this will be covered in their limited 3 months warranty.

Comments: bought this for the aesthetics of my refugium. the light is nice and bright! The parts are a sort of cheaply made (flimsy plastic) Would have given it 5 starts if: 1. The price was cheaper and 2. The bulbs were easily replaceable for purchase at a local hardware store. You have to use the JBJ bulbs as i was told from JBJ.
