"JBJ Nano Cube"
- Product Review by Scott Haviaras
(Posted on 7/15/12)

Comments: I own a Coralife Nano Cube 14 and this JBJ 12, last purchase was to compare to save a few dollars with the JBJ.

First off the thing I dislike the most with the JBJ is the fans and pump both are very noisy.

Lights: I like the fact that that the ballast is away from the lid so the heat from this will not affect the water temperature, however I do not like the 2 compact fluorescents are on some plug, would have liked to timer them separately. LED: on tank is just the right amount of night lighting, however wish it had a expansion slot like the Coralife.

Filter: not crazy about sponge, prefer cartage in Coralife.

Lid: good that hinge pegs are on lid, that way if they break you do not have to replace the more expensive part, with Coralifes you would have to replace the light and fan housing much more expensive repair.

Suggestion for JBJ, find quieter fans and pump & seperate lighting cords because of thses items I would suggest Coralifes Nano Cube.

Comments: I recieved this tank about a week ago for a starter saltwater aquarium and i have it cycling live rock right now. I like the fact that everything is intergrated inside of it. It's east to maintain, no leaks and everything runs smoothly.

"jbj 6 gal. nanocube"
- Product Review by Bonnie Smith
(Posted on 6/8/11)

Comments: This is my 2nd nanocube. There are things I like about them and things I do not.I like the rear compartment filter chambers and the fact that they can be modified into refugiums and you can hide your heater in there.I like the sleek look of the tank with its round corners.I dont like the stock lighting. You would think with a lighting company selling the tank they could get that part right! Even with the ballast cooling fans, the tank gets way too hot for corals.I struggle to keep mine below 81 degrees even with a fan blowing on it and the feeding lid raised. The LED nite vue lamps are on the same circuit and cord as the daytime lamps so I cant put a timer on both to control when they come on unless I turn them on and off myself which I cant because apparently I got a defective switch because the only time the nite vue lights will come on is when I turn on the day lamp. That is why I do not give this a 5 star rating.

"Cool little desktop tank!"
- Product Review by Chris Hardwick
(Posted on 4/2/11)

Comments: This tank is perfect for my office at work in my cubicle. I just put a small file cabinet under the desk with a 2x4 wedged in to hold the weight and it's perfectly supported. In reality the perfect tank in my opinion is the 28 gallon HQI nanocube with metal halide and skimmer, which is the ultimate tank, but it costs a lot more and won't fit in my cubicle. That said, I really love this tank for the price (I paid $140 with shipping). The first thing I did was get some aquarium sealant and I glued on the surface skimmer because it would not stay put and the water in the back would jump around so you wouldn't know how much fresh water to top off with for evaporation. The other thing I don't care for is the fan noise. They are not very loud but not silent either, and pretty noticable in a quiet environment. They do have upgrades on e-bay but I'm not sure I'm ready to upgrade them just yet. My tank is at 78F with no lights, and gets up to about 80F with the lights on, a little on the warm side. The ultimate setup would be a chiller but they are very expensive. Another thing is the light makes the water too blue so I've ordered a small white LED light strip on e-bay (from Hong Kong) for about six bucks, I'm hoping that will brighten things up. I did see a 12 gallon at my local fish store that was up and running for years that had the compact fluoresents and the coral growth was awesome. The lights are great for medium light species such as polyps, mushrooms, and certain anemones. My plan is to fill it with purple live rock, then put one large bubble tip anemone in it with two clownfish hosting in it. I'm sure it will be months before I get there, wish me luck! One other thing, I have yet to see a competitor tank in the six gallon range that even compares. I love that the front is actually glass and not cheap acrylic.

"NANO CUBE 12 GAL"
- Product Review by Lisajo Johnson
(Posted on 12/28/10)

Comments: We bought this for my son who would like to take some of his saltwater fish to college. It looks amazing with curved glass and is so quiet that it's hard to tell if it's on! (That's a good thing!) The only piece we had to add was a heater and it has a place to do this without interrupting the seal on the lid.

"6 Gal Nano"
- Product Review by Joseph Schanes
(Posted on 12/18/10)

Comments: I bought this for my daughters bedroom, seeing that she loves my tank in our living room. When i got it i began pulling the filter media out which would not be use, the ceramic rings were wedged in so tight i had to rip the bag to pieces to extract them. I decided to cut the foam into 3 pieces and use one at a time and some finer filter floss on top of that. I figured using the whole piece of foam would make it very challenging to extract it when it was time to clean, and i could see all of the waste material ending back into circulation as it would require a bit of a struggle to get it out. By using a piece of filter pad on top it allows me to easily pull out the dirty stuff without having it washed back into the tank. When i first started the tank i noticed the alot of noise coming from the return pump, upon inspection i found a broken tab on the pump housing that holds the the pickup and discharge diaphram on the pump, and with further inspection found a cracked impeller shaft. I went to the lfs and bought a replacement accella pump,no one around me sells maxi-jet. I installed the 166gph pump in the sump and started it up, the flow was great, only problem was it was twice as noisy as the first pump. I ordered a maxi-jet 600 and all is well, cant even hear it running!
All in all the tank is great, daughter loves it. I just wish quality control was a bit better. If you are going to make a small reef out of this, i do recommend going to a slightly more powerful pump.

Comments: Purchased a 24 gal. previously and love it. Sparkling water and easy to care for. However, the 12 gallon's light cooling fans are exceptionally loud. I will be calling for a replacement hood or fans. Otherwise this is just as fine as our 24 gal.

"Disappointing"
- Product Review by John Christiansen
(Posted on 7/22/10)

Comments: 6 Gal NanoFirst tank every, wanted to learn more of the hobby before going bigger. The tank was well packaged and arrived in good shape. Set it up with live rock and sand and it cycled in about 2 weeks. After about 4 months use, one of the LED's has gone out and the pump propeller broke. Tended to run 80 - 82 degrees F in the summer months even with the feeding lid open all the time for circulation. I found the lighting insufficient even for soft corals like ric's, zoa's, and frog spawn running light about 7-8 hours per day so I wouldn't recommend it for anything but fish only use. It's a lot of money after tank, live rock, sand, and live stock for such meager results...going to sell it and move on to a bigger tank with better lighting.

"Great mini reef tank"
- Product Review by Joseph Brown
(Posted on 7/16/10)
-
Comments: I was really excited when I found this tank online. It has been up and running for almost two months and my fish and coral are doing great. I understand that the lighting is a little weak, but all of the soft coral in the tank is thriving (I just took some frags from my 100 gallon tank). I added a small protein skimmer and do a half gallon water change weekly and everything in the tank seems to be happy. The tank seems plenty big for my baby clown, a red scooter blenny and a green clown which I have had from the beginning. My only wish is that it was possible to attach a timer so it could automatically switch from day to night lights, but the LED night lights do look really cool. Happy Reefing.

"6g Nano Cube, 1 week ownership"
- Product Review by Aaron Titus
(Posted on 6/28/10)
-
Comments: I've had this nano cube for just under a week, and I am very happy with the product. Overall its great, there are just a few small details that I would like to see changed. First, the little plastic overflow intake does not stay in place and tends to shift up which makes the water level too high in the main tank. A little tab or dimple on the intake to keep it in place would be perfect. Second, the water return pump barely fits in the back. Though its been ok so far, the intake is very close to the wall of the filter unit. If it was ever to shift against the wall it might burn out the motor. It would be nice to have a pump with slightly smaller dimensions to ensure this won't be a problem.

"just ok"
- Product Review by Jacob Reuter
(Posted on 6/27/10)

Comments: first fish tank ever. the back chambers leaked water between all three but not into the main tank. i had to use silicone sealant. can only use heaters and such with flat cords or they get squished by the clear lamp cover on the way in. the curved edges are fine but i dont like the bowed front, the optics are warped. the filter blows fine but does not pull very strong through the three chambers. and that is without anything in it. i can not imagine using all three sponges it comes with. i will end up getting rid of this tank after i get used to the hobby. mostly because of the bowed front. no fun to sit and stare at. the lighting is fine on this dx model and the hood works fine. all in one is a nice concept for small and easy. i would either get a higher quality brand or buy separate parts. this came out cheaper. but it is cheap. after spending 600 bucks on the tank , accessories and rock etc. you get it set up and wish your money had been better spent. even if it cost a bit more. still excited but not because of the tank.

"Good Stuff"
- Product Review by Jordan Roth
(Posted on 6/2/10)

Comments: I like the JBJ Nanocube even though you read a lot of bad reviews. I got this tank because it was a good buy and had everything I needed to make my reef experience great. I went from a 65 gal bow front to this; and I must say I love my larger setup but it does take up too much room so moving in the direction of a simple Nano setup was perfect.

I will say I do believe that the Nano tanks do take a little more control, time, and money to work with. That is my personal opinion and I'm sure others will differ.

Comments: In general,I am pleased with the technology(especially the lighting effects by day or moonlight. My tomatoe clown fish seems to enjoy his new habitat(kicks up bottom sand when hes happy). The water temperature sometimes concerns me ranging from 79.2 to under 83;I think your designers(6gal) should have used a smaller pump(not the 140gph found in both the 6 and 12 gal aquariums) to reduce the thermal effects of the immersed pump on the 6 gal water temperature.Allow fans to operate with lighting off.

"Nano Cube 6 test."
- Product Review by Paul Lopez
(Posted on 7/4/09)
-
Comments: The Nano 6 is a nice tank, the lighting looks great, the blue LED night light really shimmers with the water. The filter media chamber is too small and will be uncomfortable to do tank maintenance; the media chamber opening holds on to the nets and rips them. I had to buy extra media nets to start the tank. The carbon that comes with the tank is awful, it bleeds too much dust. I used premium grade low-ash activated carbon from another maker in a new net.
I had to put the ceramic rings that came with the Nano in a new net, when I tried to pull out the net that came with the tank (have to rinse) from the media chamber the net ripped. The Nano is great looking, and the materials the tank is made with are all excellent grade materials. The filter system is not that well thought out. Too soon to say the filter system won

"Great Nano Tank!!"
- Product Review by Ron Pike
(Posted on 2/1/09)

Comments: I love this tank! My last tank was a 55 gallon about 20 years ago. Old school wet/dry, bio balls, crazy $ lighting the whole nine yards. Getting back into the hobby I found out so much has changed over that time.

My reason for getting back into the hobby with this 24 gallon tank was to Limit my spending, I can only fit so much into it and maintain a proper bio-load. I upgraded the return pump with a Maxijet 1200, also added a light to the back of the second chamber to run some cheato in there and that is it.

Since I only have a couple of fish with softies and LPS the stock lighting is fine for my. Although you can upgrade it for more money.

Love the clean lines and look of the rounded corners. The hood fans are nice and quiet, keeps temps in check, although I have not been though a summer with it so I'll see how they do with summer temps. I'll just turn the heater down or off if needed.

When I bought mine a few months back, I got the stand for free. The stand is nice and solid, the inside of the cabinet is kinda small, but then the stand is small too.

I like the Larger Full front opening lid over the 24 gallon Aquapod smaller one. Also the Nanocube has 3 watts per gallon of stock PC lighting, the Aquapod has 2.66 per gallon.

I love this little tank!!!

Comments: JBJ's six-gallon tank is a great first aquarium, especially for those interested in marine or reef life. I bought this unit as a gift for someone who will use it in their office. The tank's size and functionality is great for and room where space is limited. Be aware, however, that the supplied lighting is only minimally acceptable. As an owner you will need to pick your fish or coral very carefully. One other note: Marine Depot is absolutely first rate as an online dealer; their processing and shipping is among the best I've experienced.

Comments: This has to be the easiest tank I've ever set up and one of the most beautiful. The square shape enables it to be placed just about anywhere and it creates a wonderful focal point in any room. The filtration system keeps the water very clear and clean and my fish and snails are thriving in their new environment. It also is a silent running tank, no "waterfall" sounds. The "night light" effect is stunning and creates a whole new environment in which to enjoy your tank. All in all a wonderful tank and I wish I owned more of them.

Comments: Nice size about 11 1/2"h X 11 1/2"w X 8 1/2"d. The picture is a bit deceitful because it is just a black aquarium with decor. Also, there was no information about needing to change the two different filters (charcoal and ceramic) once a month. The lighting is neat and the pump is enclosed. My biggest complaint is that it is noisy!
