JBJ Ocean Pulse - DUO Wavemaker (2 pump Capacity) Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

Creating Motion in Captive Oceans
The Ocean Pulse Duo and Quadra are an innovative wavemakers that were specifically designed to replicate the natural alternating rhythms of tides and currents for home aquariums.

These wavemakers instantly create turbulent flow patterns with adjustable alternating cycle times from 10 seconds - 6 minutes. All models are equipped with an adjustable dial(s) for quick and easy set-up for virtually all types of inverts, corals, filter feeders and fish who will gain immediate benefits.

Always research specific flow requirements for individual animals before making adjustments.

Water movement is vital for the success of invertebrates, animals with symbiotic algae, filter feeders anf fish. The natural currents in the ocean bring random flow and wave cycle patterns that provide nourishment while suspending waste particles for filters to effectively trap.

Benefits of Replicating Wave Patterns
Recreating water movement is essential for captive animals within our aquariums for long-term success. By installing the Ocean Pulse Wavemaker you will immediately be rewarded, as you see you aquarium transform into a cleaner, healthier and more natural environment.

Benefits
 • Provides oxygen rich water to entire aquarium
 • Provides more stable water temperature
 • Creates desirable turbulant flow patterns only found in nature
 • Flushes "dead spots" of detritus and accumulated waste
 • Increase fish activity
 • Stimulates coral and invertebrate growth
 • Allows corals more exposure to light
Note: Some pumps will not work with wave makers.

Comments: the controller does what it is supposed to, but it is a simple on/off switch. i am not sure if better power heads would handle that better, but my budget ones dont want to start smoothly at times after being switch off. the more expensive units would be a better choice i feel.

Excellent!

Comments: My wife and I have had our nano reef in the current tank for about 1 year, and had a hydor powerhead with one of the cheap $10 deflectors on the end of it. This work very well, we were very impressed with how well all of our corals were doing with the "simulated waves". However, we continued to have some alge problems from dead spots in the tank, so we decided to order this wave maker system. Upon arrival the wave controler was not functioning properly, only allowing the waves to be produced at the 10 second or 4 min interval. I called up Customer Service and they sent out a replacement unit for me, and up recipet of that I then returned the defective one.So with everything hooked up and working properly, the powerheads make a huge difference in the tank. All of our Zoa's and Softies are doing amazing with the waves et at 60 second intervals. The LPS also like the new powerheads and wavemaker. IN the past two weeks our tank has been crystal clear, with no alge noted in the tank. This was a great buy, and have already reccomended this to a friend.

Great!

Comments: Works freaking great!!! Not quite as fancy as the other super overpriced brands, but does the job just as well. First week of use, and I can tell the fish and coral dig it. The right l.e.d. indicator doesn't light up all the way, but I thought, "Who cares?!?!?". Definitely a great product at a sweet price!

Comments: I now own quadra wavemakers and one duop wavemaker for my various reef aquariums and I am very pleased with the performance of the unit,as well as the accompanying pumps. I have owned many JBJ products, including pumps, chillers and lighting units, and I have been very pleased with the quality and performance of all the products.

"wave maker" - Product Review by Johns Matthew (Posted on 1/25/11)

Excellent!

Comments: I have had a coral tank for about 2 years now but I am still learning. I have recently found the forum section on the website and it has given me so much insight into what I was doing wrong and what I am doing right. I have had constant issues with red slime and my snails would die too. I got two korila power heads and run them through the wave maker. I went with the 4 channel so I can add more pumps later. My fish loved the changes in water flow. It brought an entire new dynamic to the tank. This model is extremly affordable and you can select to run times from a matter of seconds to continious flow. The pumps are totally silent and the wave maker runs perfect. I am already seeing improvment with the top flats of my live rock. I would recommend this product to any new tank owner.

Comments: This thing is an excellent buy. If you want decent wave making and pulsating to keep you water from being a straight constant flow (which is bad) then this the proodut. Yeah, I have seen all of the high end wavemakers I'm sure they are great products, however, I bought 4 hydor evolutions and the quad JBJ and I have motion in the ocena and the corals are loving it. I had the Natural wavemake at one point that's decent too but this is better, just my two cents. You adjust the flow that you want. The only main difference with this then with the big dollar items is you don't have the push button modes. You just have dials that goes from seconds into minutes. Just tune in the flow you want and your done. Excellent product.

Comments: I am pleased for the most part with this product, I am using two Koralia evolution 750 powerheads and they are completely silent when switching from one to the other. the down side to this product is that there is no switch to turn it off. Even if you turn it to Zero, one of the powerheads remains running, so to feed my fish, I have to unplug the wavemaker. So this works great but I rated it below average due to the need for a On/Off switch.

"Works but One Problem" - Product Review by Dale Solomon (Posted on 12/7/10)

Great!

Comments: This product works great except for one problem. After a power outage, BOTH pumps come back on and stay on when power is restored until you manually reset it. With both pumps running concurrently my sump empties and air is pumped into my tank. They need to design it so only one outlet comes back on after a power outage.

Comments: this is a great product. I'm sure that the more expensive controllers are more customizable, but this one was a cheap way to have a wave generator. I'd recommend this product if you are looking cheaply control four power-heads. I've noticed an increase in the tank quality from using it. Thanks guys!

Comments: It works great but every time you want to feed your fish you need to unplug it and every time you unplug it you need to reset the dials. Wish there was a switch or something to stop the power heads. The price is great but if there is something a little more expensive that has a switch I would rather get that.

Excellent!

Comments: I ordered this and within a couple days it arrived. I have used it since (for about 2 weeks) and it is great. There is no sediment anywhere in my 90 gallon reef and my sps loves the flow. I like that you can set it to be constant on or pulsing from 10 seconds to 6 min. Great product, I'm using it with two Koralia Evolution 1400s, they make a slight click noise sometimes but you hardly notice and the flow is perfect.

Comments: I love this product, it took care of all the dead spots I had in my 90 SPS reef tank. I have previously used a SCWD for my wave action. This is way better I have the Quadra and it alternated one pump at a time creating a really nice flow broad flow that SPS need. I strongly suggest pairing this with the Koralia Evolutions

"Great purchase!" - Product Review by Dennis Hall (Posted on 5/8/10)

Excellent!

Comments: I read the reviews and knew what this would and would not do before purchasing so there were no surprises. If the power should go off it will need to be reset but that is not a problem, I would need to do the same with my light timers as well. When power is restored all four pumps will turn on so flow is not lost. I prefer to keep things a little less tech and a lot more reliable and easy so a few less bells and whistles are my style. The price speaks for itself (another criteria) and they had the best price anywhere. One more thning, the four Korallia Evolutions I am using have been reduced to one plug-in instead of four. If this is good enough to meet your needs it is a real deal. Just started using it so cannot comment on reliability.

Comments: The wave maker seems to work well but for some reason the one I recieved runs on constant power mode still when it is set to run on the 10 and 20 second cycles. However I contacted jbj and had to send in some type of form and they are supposed to replace it for me. It s just kind of been a hassle to have to fill forms out and mail them in but the wave maker seems to work well on the other settings so that's good.

Comments: works well, not great with sure flow mods since the propeller hits the anti-reverse tab every time they start and makes a rattling sound. im thinking of cutting out the tab it should randomize flow better by the powerhead flowing backwards sometimes. a soft start on the wavemaker might make it better.

Great!

Comments: I bought this because I already had the Accela powerheads, so it was guaranteed to work. So far it has worked exactly as described. Others have mentioned that reverts to 100% on after a power outage (it is clearly stated in the manual)... but as long as you know that before you buy it shouldnt be a problem. If you have the space and money, you should probably have all your aquarium equipment on a UPS anyway.

The dial doesnt seem very accurate (no individual click for each setting), but you can play with it and get it set just right.

Comments: It does what it is designed to do. One of my powerheads comes on seamlessly but the other rattles before coming on. So not sure whether to blame the wavemaker or the pump. Controls are great, simple and click into place. Only problem is with the one pump, if I take it apart and get it silent like the other than no problems at all with the wavemaker.

Comments: I WAS ALREADY RUNNING 4 POWER HEADS OF DIFFERENT TYPES IN MY 55. WITH ALL RUNNING ALL THE TIME THERE WAS ALOT OF CURRENT GOING BUT IN THE SAME SWIRILING FLOW. THE QUADRA BROKE THE FLOW UP SO NOT AS MUCH CURRENT BUT COMING FROM DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS. MY CORALS LEANING IN ONE DIRECTION ALL THE TIME ARE NOW MOVING IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS WHICH LOOKS MORE LIKE THE REEF FLOOR. I AM ALSO GOING TO BUY THE DUO FOR ANOTHER TANK. I DO REALLY LIKE THIS PRODUCT. AND I DO RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WITH ALOT OF FLOW IN THEIR TANK.

Comments: I purchased this for 2 koralias and they worked ok, they definately do their job of alternating currents. I would recommend this more for maxi-jets for quiet operation, which is what I have done, If you dont mind the first 2 seconds of clacking of koralia powerheads then this is perfect for them.

I am upgrading to seio 620 or 820's pretty soon, they should work the same as the maxi-jet do to the solid design.

Great wavemaker for the price, budget reefers will be glad they picked this up!!!!

Comments: I bought this wavemaker because I was reading other reviews of how well it works with the Koralia pumps. I have 2 Koralia 3's and I was not happy with they worked together. The pumps came on so suddent that they "chattered" for a second. It becomes very annoying. Your better off forking out the money for a gradual power wavemaker.

Comments: This is a great product well made and the dial gives you a positive selection as you move it around. the dial movement is very smooth. It works well with my Hydor Nano powerheads without any problems. There is one thing which I found disappointing with this unit and that is if you have a power cut or you power off this unit and back on, it automatically switches BOTH powerheads on until you move the dial back to zero then to the delay you want, so you are not able to put this unit on a timer. If this doesn't bother you, then JBJ Ocean Pulse is a great unit. P.S. it doesn't have a feeding delay :o(

Comments: It's very simple and does what it should. Great water randomizing device if you're on a budget. I run 2 maxijet 1200's on each output (using a power splitter). Recommended for small tanks since the only pumps you can really use are maxijets.

"Good product for the cost" - Product Review by Michael L Bevins (Posted on 3/26/08)
Rating

Comments: I recently added the Quadra wave maker (4 pump capacity) to my 180 gal. reef tank. The wave maker works reasonably well, especially for the cost. It is difficult to synchronize the timers if you want to have 2 pumps working at the same time, but it is possible. Anytime the power goes out (either by turning it of or a failure) the settings must be reset, which means the process of getting the pumps in sync must be repeated. There is no large volume of water movement as with a true wave, rather this unit only creates alternating lineal water flow, so the full effect of a wave is not created. Don't get me wrong, the water movement is adequate, but definitely not what the wave "box" units provide, such as the Tunze Wave Box (cost around $575). Since the cost of this unit is less than 1/5 of a box unit, it is affordable for all. Some power heads don't work well (with the constant on/off) and a list of those that do would be helpful.

"Buggy" - Product Review by Stuart Lewis (Posted on 2/9/08)

Comments: This has good features for the price, but it has bugs that I've confirmed with a couple of other people. (1) The printed timing isn't exact- not a big deal but you have to adjust it by trial and error, and (2) When the thing is turned on- such as after you switch the power off for maintenance or after brief power outage- both outlets are turned on at the same time by default. You need to move the dial around to make it work like a wavemaker again.

Comments: Great product except for one minor detail. I was hoping to hook this to a timer so that at night I could give the wave maker a rest from midnight to 6am. Unfortunately, if you ever stop power to the device, when it turns back on, it automatically turns both pumps on and keep running both of them instead of alternating them. Nice only if you never have a power outage and never want to give your reef a rest.

"Wave maker dissapointing" - Product Review by Jason Lomberk (Posted on 12/15/07)

Comments: A major flaw with this unit: Every time there is a power outage or the aquarium is shut off for maintenance you MUST reset the unit manually or it then leaves both pumps on continuously when power comes back on. Since power blips are commonplace with today's utility companies, you have to check this thing regularly to see if it has to be reset.
