LaMotte KH/Alkalinity Test Kit 4491- DR-01 / Direct Reading Titrator Method Information

The threats to your aquarium system are threats that you cannot see. It is easy to guard against algae infestation or large parasites, but it is harder to be on your guard when the threats are invisible. It is precisely the fact that these threats are invisible that make them quite deadly to your system because your fish and your plant life will only start exhibiting signs of stress and disease and degradation only when it is almost too late.

To prevent your water quality from degrading due to chemical compounds released by decaying waste, decaying plant life or undigested food, you should always be testing your water. The best test is a test for different chemical compounds. While these are great, the test should also test for pH level and alkalinity. Alkalinity impacts your fish and plant life`s health tremendously because high acidity or too high of alkalinity seriously impacts your aquarium inhabitant`s health. For great alkalinity tester, try the Lamotte KH/Alkalinity Test Kit 4491 - DR/Direct Reading Titrator Method from Pet Store.

This system uses a new test method which is faster, more useful and helps you eliminate hazardous materials in your aquarium. Also this test does not use hazardous base materials. If you are looking for a better way to test your water`s alkalinity level, try the Lamotte KH/Alkalinity Test Kit 4491 - DR/Direct Reading Titrator Method. Alkalinity is a crucial indicator of the health of your aquarium system. Always be consistently on the look out for fluctuations in alkalinity.

Direct reading titrator for Total Alkalinity. Range is from 0-200ppm with sensitivity in 4.0 ppm increments. Approximately 50 tests.

These kits are part of an ongoing effort by the LaMotte Company Research and Development team to produce new test methods and kits that are faster, easier-to-use, and reduce or eliminate the use of hazardous materials.

LaMotte KH/Alkalinity Test Kit 4491- DR-01 / Direct Reading Titrator Method Reviews

"Confusing at First but good" - Product Review by Greg Stjohn (Posted on 3/16/12)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: When it first arrived, I was confused and thought I had received the wrong product. But I read the reviews and comments on this website by other purchasers and began to understand what to do.

After using it a couple of times, I think it is easy to use and seems to be a much more precise method than the API test kits.

I know what some people say about the color being confusing--it gets a darker blue as it gets close to the end point. But I do it in front of a piece of white paper under a lamp, and by swirling you can see when it is purple.

Comments: This kit is designed for swimming pools & hot tubs per the instructions. Has nothing that will give you a reef tank reading.
NOT easy to use either!

"Very nice test" - Product Review by Brian Chandler (Posted on 12/9/09)

Excellent!

Comments: Quality test which is accurate and repeatable. It is very important to continue swirling the vial and then let it sit 5 minutes after you think you have reached the endpoint, as the reagents need time to react, and often the solution will revert back to pre-endpoint coloration. You need to keep doing this until it stays at endpoint for an accurate reading. To get dkh from ppm, simply multiply your result by 0.056. My Salifert alkalinity reads 2.3 dkh too high! Many others have experienced this as well.

"Good but...." - Product Review by Richard Amos (Posted on 8/22/09)

Great!

Comments: I was using Salifert's Alk testkit and was getting some crazy high readings. I needed another test kit to confirm. I have heard many people claim Salifert is no longer accurate and I also heard that LaMotte's Alk test kit was very good. So I gave it a try.

LaMotte confirmed my Salifert readings - they are within .4 dKH of eachother which could very easily be accounted for by user error. The bottom line: Salifert AND LaMotte both appear to be accurate.

The Good: Testing process is quick. Components are high quality. Results are just as accurate.

The not so Good: as others have said, results are in ppm so you will need to do a conversion. Forget doing math by hand: just Google "ppm to dkh" and click on Saltyzoo (the first result returned for me) for an online calculator. Also as other have said, more of the regeant is needed. You will blow through that much more quickly than the tablets.

The bad: As others have said, it is difficult to determine the exact shade of purple at the titration point that indicates you are done. Yes, there is an endpoint - but it takes several drops of regeant to get to it. Where do we stop?

I give this product 4 stars because it is accurate and easy. A fifth star would have been given if there was more detailed instruction on where to stop adding regeant and of course if the price was a bit lower. The ppm thing people are complaining about really is no big deal. Overall, IMHO just as good as Salifert (which is a bit cheaper and just as easy to use). I'm glad I have it though as a way to double check results.

"Mmm... it stinks." - Product Review by George Mezori (Posted on 7/30/08)

Comments: First of all it only measures in ppm. I have been using dKH to measure ALK and I don't want to switch/convert. The next thing I noticed was I wasn't sure where to put the water level at. With such a big glass tube it creates quite a large miniscus. I ended up using a syringe(kit does not come with) to measure 5ml. FYI... the bottom of the miniscus(concave part of the water line) should go at the water line mark. Next thing I noticed was the reading was diff. (After trying to convert it to dKH) than my Salifert kit. I redid it. I then tested the kit with a Calibration ALK fluid and it was about 1 dKH off. So i DO NOT recommend this kit. I do like, and Salifert should try, the cap with the hole in it for the last reagent. It was nice to add drops and shake the same time without worrying about the reagent not getting into the bottom right away.

"LaMotte KIS Principle" - Product Review by Antony Fendt (Posted on 6/12/08)

Excellent!

Comments: What can I say about using it ... it is fantastic and simple to use, 5 steps to success:
(1) Fill the test tube;
(2) Add 1 x BCG-MR indicator tablet & swirl;
(3) Fill the calibrated tritrator with reagent;
(4) Drip into the test tube and swirl until the colour changes;
(5) Read alkalinity as CaCO3 in ppm off the scale on the tritrator.

Colour change? Fantastic colour scale ... starts green and end point is at purple which is strong and easily identified. If you overshoot, it turns red!

By all accounts this test kit is very accurate and very simple to use.

I would recommend this alkalinity test kit above any other that I have used.

Comments: Big fan of this test. The end-point color is dramatic and clear. From that you learn how to watch for the purple stage before it. Just drop in 5ml, one tablet, swish and titrate. Wonderfully accurate -- The best!

Comments: Kit is pretty good. I think it's a little difficult telling when you get the correct shade of purple to stop dripping the reagent.

Comments: This is my first experience with LaMotte. The test is easy to use and to read. The problem is it dosn't tell you how to convert from ppm to Dkh. Also what you have pictured and what I recieved aren't the same kits.

"Alkalinity testing salt tank" - Product Review by Malcolm Maclaren (Posted on 1/27/08)

Great!

Comments: The kit is easy to use. It is much more reliable than the 5- on-one test strips that I had been using. The only drawback is the chance of going beyond the endpoint in the titration. The color change is gradual enough at the endpoint that a drop or two less or more make for little color difference. That is probably the nature of the beast (indicator dye). That said, a drop or two doesn't make the end number that different, and as my physics/chemistry teacher said-we aren't building a church when it comes to measuring, we are estimating.

Comments: The test kit appears to be working well for me. I have used other alkalinity test kits that I have had problems with. The equipt that comes with the kit allows for accurate measuring and the kit is easy to use and understand. I would recommend printing out a KH to Alkalintiy conversion table; I dont believe they come with one, mine didn't. Over-all its a great test!

"Accurate but..." - Product Review by Benjamin Dare (Posted on 1/23/08)

Comments: I like the kit. It comes with tablets that disolve very quickly. The only reason I couldn't give it a higher rating is because it's very hard to decipher the color change. If you can see the color change correctly the kit is very accurate.

"Excellent readability" - Product Review by Kirk Melton (Posted on 1/18/08)

Excellent!

Comments: Very well made kit...well thought out, looks "lab grade." Direct readings of PPM from the titrating syringe, no need for tables. Multiply by 17.86 if you want dKH. Very strong, discernible color change from start to endpoint, even has a 3rd color that occurs if you overshoot the endpoint. I wish their Ca kit was this good (haven't used it, but, reviews aren't that good for it).

Excellent!

Comments: Very high quality and accurate test kit. Glass vials are very nice as well as the "draw up" method of the titrant. Color change is good. Does include good instructions. Conversion for PPM to dKH is multiply reading by 0.056. Easy kit, GREAT QUALITY. Excellent replacement for low quality/inaccurate Salifert kit. Now if LaMotte could just make a decent Calcium kit!!
