Marineland Maxi-Jet 400 Pro Powerhead (110/500 GPH) Reviews

"Noisy Rattle" - Product Review by Troy Wilson (Posted on 8/30/12)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: After a couple of months it started to rattle really bad. Cleaned it but still rattles. It comes and goes so now I use it to mix saltwater and replaced it in the tank.

"depends how you use it" - Product Review by Ryan Oconnell (Posted on 5/30/12)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: I have a bunch of old and new maxi-jets that I use for various tasks. If the pump is used to mix saltwater and is just left on with no back pressure its quite but once you put it on a reactor or try a little head pressure it rattles like no other. I bought a cobalt version to see if that's any better because the quality has gone down with marineland.

Comments: I got a few of these to move and mix water. They are noisy and had a hard time starting up out of the box. They work, but they are not the pump the MJ1200 used to be.

Excellent!

Comments: It only took me 2 minutes to put this together, very simple once you read the directions. The directions are also easy to follow. Hopefully it will not be cheap enough to break right away (like everyone else is saying).

"Not worth it......" - Product Review by Deborah Neal (Posted on 3/14/12)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Bought 4 MJ1200 Pro poweheads for our wavemaker. These are the loudest rattling powerheads I have ever heard. They rattled like crazy every time they started(if they started at all). Now looking for a different brand of powerhead that would be quite and dependable. These where a complete waste of money.

"What happened to maxi jet ?" - Product Review by Alan Zelaya (Posted on 3/11/12)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: I have several Maxijet 1200s that I have had for as long as 10 years - and all of them still work fine - though I use other options for circulation now. I recently bought an MJ900 to use as a UV pump, what happened to Maxi Jet quality? The frame that holds the suction cups will not properly clip on to the powerhead - it will slip right through. This is not the same powerhead sold years ago, even if the name is the same.

"Maxi-Jet PRO is nice." - Product Review by Oscar Abdon (Posted on 2/28/12)

Great!

Comments: The Maxi-Jet PRO is nice, but you have to be practical about it. Circulation pump is powerful but weak when used as a powerhead. I haven't tried utility mode yet to see if it leaks but I'm betting it's going to be weak. But you can expect those if you cared to read the flow stats. Overall, I like it because it's cheap and versatile. You just have to do your research to see if they can handle what you're going to use them for. Don't use the laminar flow on a wavemaker controller. It makes a loud click everytime it turns on.

"No Good As A Reactor Pump" - Product Review by Jason Skagerberg (Posted on 2/13/12)

Comments: I just bought this pump for the GFO single reactor as this is the pump they "had" recommended (now they recommend the Cobalt Aquatics MJ1200). Anyways, since Marineland has cheapened their pumps by moving production to China they now make a horrible loud rattling noise when the flow is restricted like the setup for a reactor. I contacted the retailer here and they said only when the outlet is fully open will it work properly, it has been confirmed as not a defect. So this pump is great for a powerhead or as a pump left wide open but is horrible as a restricted reactor pump. So me being frustrated, I decided to use my Mini-Jet 606 pump I already had here (for water changes) and it worked just fine and runs super quiet for the GFO reactor for my 29 Biocube. I do not recommend this cheap pump.

"Onmi-Directional Mount Loose" - Product Review by Ed Fagenson (Posted on 2/8/12)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: I've used Maxi-Jets for years and was really looking forward to the new design and the Laminar Flow mod. Big problem though. The Omni-Directional Mount is not tight enough to hold the Powerhead in place -- it simply falls down. Too loose to work.

Had to go back to the old impeller cover. But, even with this setup, the Rotational Output tip doesn't stay on. It falls off. Again, loose plastic.

Lastly, the Powerhead clicks when my Wavemaker switches on.

Bad implementation, poor quality control at the manufacturer.

Pretty disappointed.

"How it works" - Product Review by Johann Rodriguez (Posted on 2/7/12)

Excellent!

Comments: The maxi-jet works great. The only problem is the strip that turns then on and off, every time they come on the make a great deal of noise before settling down. This is very loud and annoying. So I just had to leave the maxi-jet on at all tIme with out cycleing them. That part blows and so no need to have the auto on and off strip.

"Maxi Jet took a step backwards" - Product Review by Robert Droessler (Posted on 1/8/12)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: I purchased the Maxi Jet 900s to go along with the NaturalWave power strip/ wavemaker as suggested on the Marine Depot website. These pumps set up with the long impeller are not designed for frequent starting and stopping as they rattle terribly on each cycle. Contrary to the website, a Marine Depot employee said these pumps are not recommended for this type of application, after I had already purchased them, and complained about them.

"Marineland Maxi-Jet 600 Pro Po" - Product Review by Jacob Wilinski (Posted on 1/2/12)

Great!

Comments: Product was too powerful for the nano tank(29 gallon) that it was purchased for. contacted customer care and they suggested using the 160 gph impeller that is included with the pump, instead of the 750gph powerhead impeller. this did solve the problem and we were able to direct the current so that the soft corals were not disturbed by the flow. others had issue with the suction cup attachment, this has not been an issue yet we hope they hold up well. The cost could not have been beat. we hope that we did not sacrifice value for low cost...it is too soon to know.

"Quite good if used correctly" - Product Review by Steve Ghera (Posted on 12/23/11)
Rating
Great!

Comments: I like the SureFlow mod on the MaxiJet 1200s. Sorry to seem them out moded by MaxiJet's design. Comparing the two, I find MaxiJet's flow rate similar, but visibly slightly less than with the SureFlow Mod. NOTE: the SureFlow mod will no longer fit this redesigned pump. I use this pump in an alternating pattern: 2hrs on and 1 hr off. I submerge it about 6 inches below surface and point it almost straight up. It does chatter upon start 80% of the time (<3 seconds if it does). It always ends up pumping forward. I can not recommend its use for rapid cycle (wave making) that have the pump cycling 15seconds to 2 minutes. It will frustrate the owner because it chatters upon restart 4 out of 5 times. I have had this pump for about 4 weeks and no problems.

Comments: After reading everyone elses reviews i agree with the propeller being clunky on start but it puts out ALOT of flow. And guys, its not a vortech, nor is it anywhere near the price range either. So after using this pump i would highly recommend it over any of the other entry level powerhead, unless you want to you use it with a wavemaker. better flow than my hydor 2's

"Redesign issues" - Product Review by Gerri Lynn Markota (Posted on 11/25/11)
Rating
Unsatisfactory

Comments: The redesigned product has issues with the push on propeller housing does not stay in place and causes the propeller to bind. This causes the unit to stop working. I have always used these powerheads for my reef wavemaker and older design units just keep working. The manufacturers needs to fix this issue asap.

Excellent!

Comments: I've been using a Maxijet 1200 for about 9 years to feed a skimmer. Never even took it apart to clean it. It has worked flawlessly. The unit is the same size as other pumps in my set up that push about 100 gal less per hour. I upgraded my skimmer to a reef octo4 recirc(great skimmer),and decided to buy a new MJ 1200 to feed it. I can't see a difference in the flow of the new pump compared to the old one. Must be built to last. The old one has found a place in a 5 gal bucket, mixing new salt water.Still ticking.

Comments: WOW! Was really surprised with this one. In the powerhead mode (non circulating mode) this pump makes incredible flow. The specs rate it at 160gph but it very well flows in the 300-400 gph range IMO.I own a Koralia nano rated at 240gph and this maxijet blows it out of the water.Only one downside is that the size of it is a little on the beefy side.Great pump for the money though.Recomended

"Meh.........it's alright." - Product Review by Kevin Watkins (Posted on 10/14/11)
Rating

Comments: I purchased one of the maxi-jet 600 pro powerheads to replace two koralia nano's in my 30 gallon mixed reef. The price was appealing. I set it up initially as a circulation pump, but it made way too much flow for my liking (no fault of the equipment). The adjustable ball mount gave out within days and the suction cup mounts only stayed put for maybe a week (on freshly gleaned glass). I have had it running as a powerhead for the last month and now have a Tunze Turbelle Nanostream 6025 on the way to replace it. I do plan to use this as a top off pump in conjunction with my JBJ ATO. I do agree this pump is good for an under gravel freshwater filter, an auto top off, or for it's utility functions, but if you are looking for a solid problem free recirculating pump, spend the extra money on something with magnetic mounting hardware.

Comments: These pumps used to be the most awesome pumps. I could use them on my Wavemaker Pro, no problem. Now they make a RACKET at start up and the ball and socket bracket that is supposed to hold them upright DOESN'T. If you are looking for a power head that stays on all the time, I guess these would be OK except that the current is so stong and direct that all my corals freaked out. My tank is 120 gallons and I WAS using 3 OLD Maxijet 1200's retro-fitted with larger impellers and flow dispersers for several years. The flow dispersers that come with the NEWLY DESIGNED Maxijets have total forward laminer flow and just an FYI: they redesigned the pump just enough so the great retro-fit kits won't fit them anymore. I'm sending them back and spending the extra money for Koralia Magnum 6's.

"great for water movement" - Product Review by Alan Auman (Posted on 9/15/11)

Excellent!

Comments: Ive always used maxi jets with great results but this is the first new style maxi jet Ive used and I must say Im really pleased. Ive got 2 1200's on my 90 gal reef system and they really move the water. A word of caution though, is that if you have a very fine substrate be careful because they can easily create a sand storm in your tank if you have them directed even slightly towards the sand bed. All in all great product for a very reasonable price. I would certainly recommend these powerheads to anyone.

"Works Well" - Product Review by Dusty Brannum (Posted on 8/18/11)

Excellent!

Comments: The pump is much quieter than my circulation pumps and my previous maxijet mods. The ball joint needs to be tightened up so that you can actually point the flow where you want. My anemones and corals seem to enjoy the flow again after not having good flow for a month or so due to pumps dying. I put 3 MJ 1200 with another 300 gph powerhead and a mag 9 return pump in a 180 and everyone seems happy.

Comments: What a great new desing they have made.
Usually new designs means that parts were made cheaper. Well, not this time. What an upgrade. You have several choices to how you use this pump and they all work great. i tried this on my skimmer and as a circuating pump and both are great. Seems much stronger than my older Maxi Jet 1200 pumps. Also throws great swirrling currents which my xenias just love.
Great upgrade in my opinion.

"little disappointed" - Product Review by Kurt Schmidt (Posted on 6/27/11)

Comments: Until now I have used the maxi jet conversion (circulation pump) on the old style jets. These work pritty well and are affordable. My hopes for the new maxi jet 1200 was that the propeller would not bind up or get off balanced this tends to make a lot of noise and startle the fish. ( the old style with the conversion do this) Unfortunately the new pumps have this same problem with the factory provided circulation pump conversion. As a standard power head this product works great i use them for several other applications. But I would not recomend it for a circulation pump.

"Lots of power!!!" - Product Review by Jim Ambroselli (Posted on 5/22/11)

Great!

Comments: Nice thing about this product is there are a couple ways to configure it. As a circulation pump it is way out of control. Mounted even 6" under water it still produced cavitation. I have an 85gl that's 5' long. As the water circulates back around it will lay the tenticals of my soft corals completely down. I tried different angles but ended up changing it up to the power head option. Works perfect that way for me. Not real happy about the way it attaches. There are several slide together parts that make it a pain to adjust once in the tank. Suction cups actually work too good. I read reviews where the pump was loud on start up. I didn't see that at all. All in all, the price is great and with a little work you can make it work great. 1 1/2 thumbs up!

"MAXI JET 1000" - Product Review by James Garner (Posted on 3/31/11)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: Let there be no mistake here. If you want a killer powerhead for your 55 gallon reef tank. These Maxi Jets, either the 1000 MJ, (if you can find one), or this 1200 MJ, are killer! These little powerheads will blow the doors off any Evolution 750's from Hydor hands down. If you have a 55 gallon tank, the 750's will not satisfy. The Maxi Jets when used with the standard venturi attachment, (not this caged attachment shown here), but the attachment which allows you to use uprise tubes, will blow like a son of a gun! when positioned anywhere in your tank. These are very small, very powerful, and once you stick them to the glass, (with the triple suction cup bracket), will not ever move or fall down. Half the size of a Evolution, Half the cost, but triple the power! Guys, if you do not have one of these killer units, do yourselves a very big favor and get one NOW! I've seen no reviews on these. They might be ok to just gently blow your corals, but they will not keep your bare bottom reefs clean. 20 years in this hobby, so don't be fooled. OK, I've told ya, and I'll let the chips fall where they may. GOOD LUCK!

Great!

Comments: Came in the mail today. I would not recommend it for setups with on/off wavemakers as it has a bit of a noisy startup. The flow in prop mode is ludicrous however; mounted at the very top of my 90 reef tank and pointing horizontally, it displaced sand on my monti mounted a couple inches above the sand bed across the tank and moved some sand around the bed itself. Absolutely nothing in its class at $25 for mass water movement, and probably too much for my 90 even with a pretty wide stream. Will relegate it to feeding water into my Kalk reactor for now. For a slightly larger / longer tank it is a terrific deal assuming typical maxijet reliability, which is expected, they appear to have left the motor unchanged from past versions. Suction cup mount is unimpressive and the ball joint on it grips fairly weakly, so there is a threat it might drop and point into the sand or a nearby coral. Place carefully as a circulation pump.

Effectiveness: 3 / 5 (Rough startup, suction cup mount, great power!)

Aesthetics: 3 / 5 (Large mount, is a Maxijet, neutral color and rather small)

Price: 5 / 5 ($25? Good god)

Overall: 4 / 5
