Comments: Over the past 3 decades I've tried many skimmers including some of my own design. In the category of cone / semi-cone, the Reef Octopus has amazed me and impressed me to the point of replacing a very expensive cone that I've only had in service 2 years or less and has no issues. The build quality of the Reef Octopus is top shelf.
<br />As for performance, I had to keep reigning it in (dialing it down) during the break in period. It has been pulling "coffee sludge" ever since.

Comments: This is the first and only skimmer I've have to buy so far. The system has been running now for about 3 years and this skimmer has been great! From the day I plugged it in it has been producing "nice" skimmate. The only issue I would note would be the noise. A periodic, louder than normal, gurgling sound that is not unbearable but still quite a nuisance.

Comments: Would have gave it 5 stars, however the only thing I dont like about this skimmer is the discharge shoots out above the water. wish it would have came with a elbow and a little extra pipe to run down into the water to keep it from splashing and to cut back on water noise. However for the money you spend, this skimmer works great. I also recommended it to a family member who bought this same skimmer as i did.

Comments: I initially noticed the thick acrylic it was constructed with and how great it all looked. The instructions were a little confusing, just because it tells you about this black piece on the silencer to take off and put back on but mine didn't come with it and its not even needed.
<br />When I got done setting it up, I plugged it in and could barely hear it. I started to panic when I noticed the return pipe was submerged in my sump, causing the water level to rise rapidly and over flow. So I read up online and read about someone using pipe to boost ot out of the water with, some I cut 2, 3 inch pieces of pvc 4 inches long and used them as boosters. It's still breaking in but the water level is ateast controllable now. It's pulling out some disgusting skimmate and turned my water crystal clear.

Comments: I have a 125g reef with a 30g sump. This skimmer was fast and easy to set up. When you start the skimmer up, adjust the valve until the bubbles meet the "water level mini" line. I set mine up at 11PM and by 8AM it was producing skimmate! I then adjusted it down just enough to bring the top of those bubbles down to where the top of the cone meets the bottom of the cup. This is the perfect setting for getting the deep dark skimmate. I have the skimmer elevated about 4" in 10" of water level as well. So if you have a return pump sharing the same space (mines is 12"x13") it allowed for extra room for my Mag9.5 pump sponge sleeve. Therefore footprint isn't so intrusive as you might think when elevated. Excellent skimmer and will never buy another brand again! Don't waste your money trying to save a few $ on a cheaper brand! Sure, they may skim, but not like this ;)

Comments: Great skimmer! Took a few days to produce skimmate. Very surprised at the difference it made in water clarity. Love it! Directions not that great and was confused about silencer caps. Instructions called for removing black caps. Called and was told no longer had black caps so skip this step and hook right. Gate valve a plus. Took a couple days to adjust but everything working great. Would definitely recommend this skimmer!

Selecting a skimmer can be daunting given the variety of shapes, types, and price points. After careful research, which included both correspondence and telephone communications with various manufacturers, I decided on the Reef Octopus 4 Pinwheel for my 65g plus 20g sump.

<br />I have not been disappointed. The skimmer works flawlessly and is very easy and quick to clean. It assembles and dissembles easily. This model can be upgraded for larger tanks and heavier bio-loads.

Comments: So far, I am not very happy with the product. I called the people that make this product for help and it still doesn't work like it should. I did a 10% water change on my 120 gal saltwater aquarium and then turned everything back on five days ago and it has been overflowing ever since. I cannot get it to regulate to work like it should and so it doesn't do my aquarium a bit of good. I would be very happy with this product I think if I could just get it to regulate and work like it is supposed to. I am not very happy with the makers of this as I felt they really didn't care to help me get it to work right. Everything else I have purchased from you has been great. This skimmer was exspensive and I really don't want to have to send it back for a replacement etc. because I got rid of my old skimmer as it didn't work any more. This review is NOT against your company. I am very happy with everything I have purchased from you but this skimmer. I will wait a little longer to see if I can get it to regulate and then if it still won't work I will have to send it back.

Comments: This seems to be a great skimmer. I currently use a prizm, eshopps and now this reef octopus. This skimmer is better build, more solid and easier to control then my others. I ran my 90 gallon reef tank without one for a week while i was waiting for this in the mail and after a day of running got a full resavoir of skim. I have read where people did not get what was pictures but.i did. Not sure why they dont tell you the real model of this wich is a nw-110-6520b.

Comments: I bought this skimmer because my Tunze was unable to keep up with the fish load in my tank. I have a 30 gallon tank with a 10 gallon sump. It took about 24 hours to start making skim but soon it was producing more skim in one day than my Tunze did in a week. Water's clear, fish are happy and coral are coming back to life. Great product.

Comments: I recently purchased the nw-150 skimmer, its works great. The only problem is dialing it, I had a hard time to get it not to fill up my collection cup with water. Customer service was outstanding, fast shipping and everything got to me in perfect shape..

Comments: Got this skimmer for a 30 gallon shallow setup after reading many reviews and hearing recommendations. The size of it makes me feel real good about what it will do for my tank. Performance seems very good. Pump is breaking in, but when water is stable the skimmer is foaming quite a but. Now it seems I rally need an auto top off for the sump. With the evaporation it's near impossible for the skimmer to keep bubbling at the top. This skimmer is very well built and the pump is huge! Make sure you have enough room for this thing as it's not really meant for nanos.

Comments: I have a 20Long reef and sump. This skimmer fits perfectly into the intake section of my sump. Set up was extremely easy, no need to even view the instructions if you have a basic understanding of how skimmers work. Performance??? I got a nice ice tea skimmate the next morning and it continues to remove waste efficiently. I highly recommend this product!

Comments: Within 24 hours this skimmer was producing a thick nasty foam with a dark green/blackish soupy skimmate. I used to own a Precision Marine Bullet-1 and could not get it to work properly. Comments: I called intending to purchase a Red Sea Berlin & the rep I spoke with this was a superior skimmer. So far he was right & after only one day it started foaming up. The only problem I have with it is that the specs say it can be operated in up to a 10" deep sump. Mine is 9" deep & I had to build a riser from acrylic to get the gate valve out of the water for it to function properly. Other than that is of solid construction & it makes many bubbles.

Comments: This thing is amazing! It's a little bit larger than I had imagined but it's worth it. I fired it up and almost instantly had nasty green foam. The directions that come with it are terrible but it's pretty easy to figure out.

Comments: I don't have much experience with skimmers as I have always done nano reefs that have daily waterchanges. But I must say I'm very mpressed with how well this skimmer works and especially how quiet it is since it's in my bedroom. Honestly you can't go wrong with this product, but you may want to use some filter pad to quiet the water output.

Comments: This skimmer is a good skimmer once you get it dialed in, I can almost set it and forget it. Once I get my ATO going I'm sure it will be perfect. I had a little trouble at first gettting the water/bubble level right. Be sure to clean the collection cup weekly so that the bubbles can slide up the neck without any resistance.

Comments: Very noisy pump, I thought the pump for this model was a Sicce, but it is only a cheap loud generic Chinese pump that is not very efficient. I believe it is 60 watts. The pump has no Underwriters Lab or other safety organization logo on it, which makes me a little nervous. Wish I would have purchased a skimmer with a better pump.

Comments: For the price and performance, this skimmer does a great job. Like other reviewers stated, my started pulling out gunk within a few hours. I gave it a 5 star for the skimmer price and performace but I really wish the company makes it easy for us to buy replacement pumps. You gotta special order it. Comments: The pinwheel design appears to work better than any other protein skimmer I've ever used. The pinwheel creates a massive amount of microbubbles so that skimming is easy and efficient without the aide of koralin phosphate remover. So in a sense it's saving you money monthly. In addition, I have several soft corals (mushrooms, sacro's, etc). I noticed a huge difference in one of my SPS after a few days of using the octopus in which the SPS started to finally open up. Overall, just a great product, easy to use, and affordable.

Comments: Installed as directed in the instructions all it does is fill the cup no matter where it is adjusted to so i can't use it i can't see this being part of the break in period

<br />Don't be alarmed if the bubble level isn't the greatest at first. After the first couple days of "break in" it started skimming perfectly for me.

<br />It, like just about any in sump skimmer is sensitive to changes in the water level. I have it in 8" of water currently. This is kept in check by an appropriately sized baffel in the sump.

<br />It's pretty much a set and forget it item. Just check the cup every once in a while for skimmate. Adjustments may need to be made as the tank is stocked because of the increased amount of waste. But adjustment is as easy as turning the valve knob and watching the bubble height change.

Comments: This is my first protein skimmer, but so far is seems to be working fine. Pulls off some nasty smelling brown stuff every couple of days. I would recommend it.

Comments: I bought the reef octopus from reading a review of it and all i can say it's great. On the second day it had produced more skimmate than my other skimmer would in a week or 2, and the collection cup has to be emptied every 2-3 days.

Comments: The instructions are real easy to follow and setup is a breeze. On the instruction it says it can take up to 2 to 3 weeks before you see your skimmer start working. I started seeing my skimmer working a little over 12 hours. This skimmer has a bubble plate to help increase it performance.

Comments: Pro's1 - The build quality is quite good for a skimmer with such a low price.2 - The shape of the body does seem to ease the transition of foam into the cup.Con's1- The skimmer I received does not have the gate valve as described in the image and text on the web (oct 2010). Instead, it has the wedge pipe flow control. The box had "2010" written on it but it does picture the wedge pipe.2 - The provided manual is pathetic - scarce on info and very poorly written. Given the general good quality of this unit, you would think the manufacturer could spend a few hours on the documentation. A review by a native english speaker is not too much to ask.A few tweaks to the flow control and I would rate this skimmer higher.

Comments: Well, this is my 3rd skimmer on my 55 gallon reef tank in just over 2 years. I needed something that would fit in my sump and I hoped this one would. Luckily it did. Because this skimmer allows you to remove the pump, put it in place and then screw the body and pump together. But how did we get here? My over priced Tunze suddenly decided to start and stop for no reason. But that's another story. Anyway to bottom line it for you folks, I am getting more skimmate from this Reef Octupus 4 than I ever got with my Coralife Super Skimmer or the overpriced Tunze.

<br />If you need a high performance skimmer look no further. For what I spent on my first 2 skimmers I could have bought 4 of these. Buy good stuff the first time and even if it costs a little more upfront, you will come out ahead in the long run.

Comments: I bought this skimmer after reading other reviews online. It came in and the build quality immediately struck me as excellent. Assembly went without a hitch, and it even included and adapter to pick up "British" sized PVC. I set it up in my sump and checked on it a day later not expecting any skimmate. Much to my amazement, it pulled out a half cup of coffee colored liquid from my well stocked 55 gallon. I have never had a skimmer break in so fast or produce such an easily obtained range of skimmate (with the new adjustment valve). Right now I've got it pulling in a really dry consistency. Depth of the water in the sump does not seem to matter. I currently have the output submerged, but it didn't seem to care when I had it 3 inches higher either.

Comments: I guess there might be "nicer" skimmers out there, but I'm not sure what they could do that this one doesn't. It's really easy to put together and started working immediately. The instructions say to allow 3 weeks for break-in, but mine started producing skimmate after one day. The construction is excellent. Love the silencer! Don't hesitate if you're thinking about buying one.

<br />This skimmer started pumping out frothy foam after 48 hours. The water level pulsed a bit until the "break in" was complete. It is very well made. It is simple and efficient. No regrets, the other reviews on this skimmer are accurate.

Comments: I just purchased this skimmer and was pleasantly surprised. In the past assembly always required some modification or plumbing solution. In addition the delicate balance of adjusting the inflow. This skimmer was up and going and producing skimate in 24 hours. I would have given it 5 stars if it came with clearer instruction. The construction of the pump and bubble chamber complex is excellent. Great value for the money.

Comments: I have last years NWB-110 model.(none cone neck) Its a great skimmer. Since it is the older model it didnt come with the gate valve. I replaced that and it preformed even better. The only problem I have is that its a little hard to dial in. Either I have a lot of skim that is watery, or slow accumulating skim that is thick. I usually go with the thick, which is better. This skimmer is awesome and im glad marine depot now carries this great company.

Comments: i ordered a reef octopus 150, and i just got it this past thrusday and within four days it already started to get a lot of organics. great skimmer, easy to set up, its not made of cheap parts, if your thinking about buying one you should.

Comments: I bought this for a 90 gallon reef tank expecting a decent skimmer. What I really got was an amazing skimmer. My pump broke in, in under twenty four hours, and absolutely no microbubbles!!!My pump is already pumping out amazing skimmate on day 2! The quantity of micro bubbles produced in the chamber is great. This is a top notch skimmer for the money no cheap parts everything is fantastic.
