Salifert Calcium Test Kit Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

  • Calcium is a major constituent of coralline algae, the skeletal material of hard corals and the skeletal needles of soft/leather corals. In many cases too low a calcium concentration retards coral and coralline algae growth.
  • Calcium also fulfills many important biological functions.
  • In a healthy aquarium, the growth and multiplication of corals, calcareous algae and other organisms can result in calcium depletion. To maintain a stable environment it is important that the calcium content should not fluctuate by more than 15 mg/L from the optimum range of 420 - 450 mg/L so regular testing should be carried out.
  • This means that any calcium test used should have an accuracy of significantly less than 15mg/L otherwise it will be difficult to monitor such fluctuations.
  • The Salifert test kit measures in steps of 5 mg/L and has an accuracy of 10 mg/L.
  • The color change is precise, detecting small but significant fluctuations in the concentration of calcium.
  • The test is not affected by magnesium.
  • Sufficient for 50-100 tests.
  • Can be used for marine water, freshwater and garden pond water

Warning!

Ca-2 reagent is irritating, contains < 2% NaOH. R36/38: Irritating to eyes and skin. S26: In case of contact with eyes, rinse immediately with pleny of water and seek medical advice.

Not for consumption. Keep out of reach of children. If swallowed contact a physician immediately.

Instructions:

1. Add with 2 ml syringe 2 ml of water in the test vial. For a low resolution and more tests per kit add 1 ml instead of 2 ml.

2. Add 1 spoon of Ca-1 (low resolution approx. 1/2 spoon) do not swirl yet.

3. Add 8 drops of Ca-2 to the water in the test vial. and swirl gently for 10 seconds. For low resolution 4 instead of 8 drops.

4. Put the plastic tip firmly on the 1 ml syringe. And draw into the syringe the Ca-3 reagent (ensure that the end of the plastic tip is constantly submersed in the Ca-3 reagent) till the lower end of the black part of the pistion is exactly at the 1.00 ml mark. There will be air present just below the piston. This is the air which was present between the end of the plactic tip and the piston. This will not influence the test result.

5. Add dropwise with the 1 ml syringe the Ca-3 reagent to the water in the test tube. Swirl after each drop a second or two.

Continue with this until color changes from pink-red to a clear blue color.

6. Hold the syringe with the tip facing upward and read the position of the , now the upper end, of the black part of the piston. The syringe has graduations of 0.01 ml. Read the Calcium value from the table or calculate as follows.

ppm Ca = (1 - reading in step 6) x 500

If you have chosen for the lower resolution multiply the calculated result by 2.

Natural sea water contains 400 - 425 ppm calcium. Use salifert`s Coral Calcium for good results.

Calcium Table
Note: If you took 1.5 ml of water in step 1 then multiply the calcium values by 2!

"Calcium test kit" - Product Review by Wesley Weathers (Posted on 9/9/11)

Great!

Comments: Just got this kit and tried it out on both my tanks. My ap test kit read one tank at 480 and the salifert read the tank at 415. 2nd tank read with ap at 440 and the salifurt read it at 425. Going to test with new water next week and will post what both kits are doing. Even though I do like the salifert kit due to it reads in increments of 5 and the ap reads 20 for every drop. Salifert was easy to use and I plan on working with this test kit for a long time.

Excellent!

Comments: Good test kit. Very accurate and easy to use. Better than the API test kits. Very long shelf life. A bit expensive but the results are worth the money. They also have instructions so you can use less amount of the reagent to get the results. You just multiply the answer.

"Right on from being too high" - Product Review by Greg Laws (Posted on 8/22/09)

Great!

Comments: When I first received this test kit, it registered about 50-70 ppm too high. I returned it for a replacement kit, and it also measured 50-70 too high. Disappointed, I did not use it for a few months. Now, for some reason, the kit is accurate. No reason why, I am using the same reference kits and the same refernce samples as before, and they are consistent.

<br />For the past 1 + year that I have been doing this, I used Salifert, SeaChem, and Elos kits. There are pros and cons to each of them, and at one point I would have crowned each of them the best. But, as time goes on and I have used these kits in general I like the Salifert line the best. They are the eaiest for me to use, an are accurate enough for my needs.

"Great test kit for the price" - Product Review by Quinn Horn (Posted on 7/13/09)

Great!

Comments: Very easy to use test kit. Has a nice, easily identified color change at the titration end point. The only reason it does not rate 5 stars is that it comes in a flimsy, thin cardboard box that gets beat up badly with time.

Comments: Usually very accurate. Must have received old test kit because reading was off 100 ppm, but prior kits were great.

"I used to like them" - Product Review by Michael Hensel (Posted on 11/19/08)

Unsatisfactory

Comments: This year, the CA test kits are terrible. I bought one in the spring that was reading everything to be over 500, and one last week (8 months later) that did the same thing. I have a 10 gallon tank with nothing in it but 2 rocks and the same water for 4 months, tested in at 500, all 4 of my tanks are now 500 according to this kit, so is the freshly made saltwater too. For 4 years I've used these kits and right now, I wouldn't take one for free.

"Good, but:" - Product Review by Ivan Moskowitz (Posted on 11/5/08)

Comments: It is a decent Ca test kit; however, I keep having the same problem with multiple kits I have purchased. The # 2 agent bottle dropper does not work well. It sometimes dispenses only a partial drop while other times it will dispense multiple drops. Often I must repeat the test starting from scratch which at this price is a big waste. For a top of the line test kit, this is unacceptable.

Comments: This is the second one of these kits I've owned in a row, and it's reliable and accurate, as we've come to expect from salifert. The quality and precision is worth the price.

Comments: The Salifert calcium test kit doesn't last very long - that is, it appears to read correctly when first used, but over time (over a months after being opened), its readings will be off by 25-50ppm or more.
