Seachem Laboratories Ammonia Alert Information

Part #: 00100

No matter how often you clean your aquarium, wastes are bound to accumulate inside because living things are present in it. Thus, it's important that you have a waste management system set up in your aquarium to get rid of those wastes. Of course, you should also have a system in place that will let you know if such unwated materials are present in your aquarium, and if the levels of their presence are dangerous.

what you need is the Seachem Ammonia Alert from Pet Store which is a device that lets you know if ammonia is present in your aquarium. Ammonia is a dangerous compund to be found in your aquarium because it is toxic to fish and corals. Ammonia makes it dofficult for fish to breathe, making them breathe harder with their gills, which in turn get injured in the process. Also, ammonia encourages the growth of parasitic algae that will latch on to healhy fish and corals and cause them to fall ill.

But thanks to Seachem Ammonia Alert, you will not have to deal with that. This small device monitors for and detects the presence of ammonia, and lets you know about it with a visible and obvious change in color. It has a sensor that comes with three indicating colors -- yellow, green and blue -- to let you know the levels of ammonia in your tank. You don't have to deal with messy test kits and chemicals to test your aquarium. All you need is this little device and you're all set.

Ammonia Alert is an innovative color device for continuously detecting and monitoring toxic free ammonia. A sensor changes reversibly from yellow to green to blue, relative to the ammonia concentration. No test kits, chemicals, or procedures are needed. The device detects less than 0.05 mg/L (ppm) free ammonia and alerts you to the #1 killer before any sign of stress. It lasts over a year and replacement sensors are available. Marine or freshwater use..

In the absence of free ammonia the unit will assume a yellow or faint yellow-green color. It is normal for the dry sensor to have a greenish hue. It may take up to a few days for a dry sensor to equilibrate with the water. No sampling of water, chemicals, or test procedures are required. The presence of the free ammonia is detectable continuously with a response time of about 15 minutes. Response to decreasing ammonia is slower, requiring about 4 hours to go from TOXIC to SAFE on removal of ammonia.

INTERPRETATION: As little as 0.02 mg/L of free ammonia will produce a greenish hue on the detector surface. This corresponds to a total ammonia (both ionized and free ammonia) of 0.25 mg/L in marine water at pH 8.3. In freshwater at pH 7.0, this corresponds to 3.6 mg/L total ammonia. Free ammonia is much more toxic than ionized ammonia. As free ammonia, the ALERT color corresponds to about 0.05 mg/L, ALARM to about 0.2 mg/L, and TOXIC to about 0.5 mg/L. The ALERT concentration is tolerated for several days, ALARM for a few days, and TOXIC is rapidly harmful. This product is not recommended for use at acid pH

Great item! Product Review by ENRIQUE HERNANDEZ (Posted on 9/6/13)

Comments: Purchased this when starting my pico/nano reef. I used well cultured rock, so cultured it had communities of aiptasia in them! Haha! Although a good way to monitor ammonia, this is unneeded if using really good premium live rock.

Although I no longer needed as my tank is now established (even flourishing), I am keeping it for the remainder of its life, which is 1 year.

Seachem Ammonia Alert Product Review by JOEY XIONG (Posted on 6/5/11)

Comments: A must use if using Cupramine. Helps to monitor true ammonia and super easy to distinguish between levels.

I used it for 5 months, took it out of water for 1 month and used it on another tank and it works fine.

Phenomenal! Product Review by TIMOTHY GOULD (Posted on 12/13/10)

Comments: I had ordered this product per recommendation of a good friend. I placed the order on December 3rd, was shipped on the 3rd, and I received it on the 9th - installed it on the 10th. After three (3) days of letting it equilibrate (per instructions if the sensor is dry), still reading 'yellow' (= <0.02), I started to question if it was working right. After contacting Seachem themselves and Marine Depot the same day: December 13th, BOTH of them PROMPTLY responding the SAME day (!!), they both advised holding the sensor over a product with Ammonia, such as Windex which I did, and sure enough, it turned purple in a second! Thus, I now know it is working properly, and I am even MORE relieved to know my aquarium is toxic-free! :)NOTE: Seachem's "Ammonia Alert" tests for NH3 (= FREE ammonia) ONLY = more important/crucial than ionized ammonia (= NH4?), as free ammonia is more toxic.

Works Great! Product Review by tuffy6969 (Posted on 6/12/10)

Comments: Since Ammonia is so important to keep track of in your reef tank - this is GREAT! You can see at a glance, if your ammonia needs tending to. I highly recommend!!
