Seachem Laboratories Reef Status: Calcium Test Kit Information

Product Manuals & Documentation

Gauge the calcium level of your aquarium water with more precision with the SeaChem Reef Status: Calcium Test Kit from Pet Store. The tests sense the presence of all kinds of calcium and indicate the level accurately using the titration technique. This technique applies three easy and quick steps of measurement that you can do it by yourself at home. The kit contains 150 titration tests that are extremely sensitive. Using the reference validation or solution, you can interpret and validate the findings of the tests.

Crafted to cater to the reef aquarium owners’ need to maintain the appropriate level of calcium to promote healthy corals, this kit allows aquarists to see the results of the tests in increments of 5mg/L. To prevent the interference of magnesium in the titration process, the acid pH titration and magnesium precipitation methods are used. A sharp-edged endpoint that changes hues from blue to pink helps you easily understand the results of the tests.

The SeaChem Reef Status: Calcium Test Kit is a simple tool, which ensures you that your corals and other aquatic life that needs calcium regularly gets the right amount for their growth and reproduction. All reef aquarists should own and keep one handy for better care of their aquariums.

Comments: There are two main problems with this product. First, the sample measuring device is a disposable plastic pipet. These devices were never intended to be used for accurate measurement of a sample of seawater, or whatever. One would be much better off with a 1 mL syringe. Second, the amount of indicator is insufficient. I had a very hard time seeing the endpoint of the titration.

Great!

Comments: Good results but it requires adding a pink powder to the solution; problem is the powder becomes gummy in high humidity becoming unusable after a couple of months.

Excellent!

Comments: Received the Seachem Ca test kit earlier in the week and man can I say precise. I have based my decision on the amount of reviews each test kit has received. So I vowed to write my interpretations on products I buy. Very precise measurements and color change (within 5mg/l). The sample is pink, and remains pink for a majority of titrant you add from the syringe, unless your calcium is really low. It then turns from the pink or pinkish to purple and even purple coloration within a drop. Then the next drop it turns blue. It is very important you add the titrant to your pink sample drop by drop and swirl every time you add a drop. The color change is precise and you can definitely pinpoint the ppm of Ca in your sample (within 5mg/l). You then stop and read which increment the water level is on or the very closest to it. The amount of water left in the syringe corresponds to an mg/l of calcium in the little paper manual also in the kit. Have been using their older version of the Ca test kit and it wasn

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Generally I like Seachem products, but was surprised with this one. Showed Calcium levels 100 below other tests. Could not even measure its own reverence validation sample correctly. Tests much cheaper did a better job. Would not buy and would not recommend. Returned the product.

Great!

Comments: This test kit is in my opinion better than the comparible Elos test kit. It appears to be more acurate and the end point color change is much more definitive. I have thrown my Elos calcium test kit away!!

Comments: This is a great test kit, and comes with a reference sample to give you confidence that it's giving accurate readings. I tested the reference sample to within 5ppm. Not bad at all.....

"Good titration kit" - Product Review by Norine Chang (Posted on 4/8/09)

Great!

Comments: Nice little Ca titration kit for those who don't want to use lots of chemicals/bulky equipment. Works well with synthetic seawater, too. For careful quantitative studies, consider using metered pipettes and flat-bottomed vials to avoid pouring errors/knocking over vials during the test. The end of the test (a very fast color change) is much more obvious than the Salifert kit (which seems to keep changing over the course of a minute and confuses you as to whether the test is over or not).

<br />Good for the scientist, not so good for the accident-prone.

"di water" - Product Review by David Moum (Posted on 3/14/09)

Comments: All in all a fairly simple test kit to use. As far as accuracy goes having a reference sample supplied with the kit is a definite plus. People who buy this product should know you need ro/di water to do the test. May require a trip to LFS when you read the instructions the first time.

Excellent!

Comments: This is the kit the others are judged by! I have used ELOS and Salifert Calicum tests, but they don't include refernce samples. When you have a doubt about the accuracy you need this! I have had trouble with bad salt and bad test kits. I bought my kit from another online reseller but the reagent was bad. I found this out because of the refernce sample, also found out one of the other kits was bad. SeaChem offered wonderful support and FedEx me the replacement regants! Now the kit measures exactly to the refernce sample and I have confidence in the results.

Comments: Yes it can. It is far more accurate than my old kit (which was probably out-of-date anyway). This one has a very professional feel and is well thought out.

Great!

Comments: This is a good kit, with easy to follow instructions. The test is easy to perform and provides quick, accurate results. The only negative is that you need to have distilled or deionized (not RO) water on hand to perform the test.
