Taam Rio Plus 50 Powerhead/Pump Information

Whether used for filtration, circulation or aeration (or a combination of both, or all three), there`s no denying that an efficient powerhead is a necessity for aquariums. A filter, circulator, and aerator will not be able to perform their functions well without the presence of a powerhead to get the water moving. Of course, a powerhead works with a pump, so get a combination that works well together.

If you`re on the hunt for a good powerhead-and-pump combo, don`t look further than the Taam Rio Plus 50 Powerhead/Pump from Pet Store. Rio has improved its lines of pumps and powerheads to make them more reliable and efficient at a lower cost. The combo employs a technology called magnetic-rotor that makes Rio`s goal possible. It doesn`t use oil so there is no danger of the aquatic environment getting polluted by contaminants. It works quietly, too, so there is no noise to stress out even the most excitable fish.

The Taam Rio Plus 50 Powerhead/Pump can pump up to 69 gallons of water per hour (GPH). It can be used with protein skimmers using Venturi technology and wet/dry and undergravel filtration systems. It can be used not just with tanks, but with ponds and water fountains, too.

Rio® & Rio Plus Aqua Pump/Powerheads provide a versatile water pumping system designed with high efficiency and reliability at lower cost. Designed with next-generation magnetic-rotor technology, Rio® & Rio Plus Aqua Pump/Powerheads offer the best high-performance solution in the aquarium industry. Biggest and most powerful models provide excellent performance within wet or dry filters and in Venturi protein skimmers when high pressure and flow rates are needed. Reliable and quiet, Rio® & Rio Plus Aqua Pump/Powerheads do not use oil to operate so they cannot contaminate the aquatic environment.

A full range of Rio® & Rio Plus Aqua Pump/Powerheads, designed to work in a variety of aquatic environments, gives hobbyists superior selection with competitive pricing.

"Rio 1700" - Product Review by Gordon Peters (Posted on 9/23/12)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: The Rio 1700 is a workhorse for the average water fountain. It has the staying power needed to run my back yard fountain nonstop through all seasons ( except short Houston winter in Jan-Feb ). Low maintenance and easy access to the internal working parts makes this unit the best value I have owned. This is only the 2nd replacement pump I have needed in the past 12 years. Hats off to Rio!!!

There really soft and dont stick to well. either way a great bang for the buck item. if i needed another one i'd buy this one again!!!!!

Comments: Pump performs to design specifications, is quite, does not use much electricity, nor generate much heat. Easy to clean and the attachements make it versatile for many needs. As a sump pump it flows water equal to manufacturer benchmarks with 3/4 i.d. hose. And about a 25% increase in flow with 1 inch i.d. piping.

Comments: I have had the 50, 90, and 600 units, but I would select the 800 over the 600 in future. The 800 pumps more, and it has a MUCH thicker power cord than the 600 - and comes with all the same attachments (all for only a couple dollars more).Highly recommended - and customer service and shipping were excellent!

"Reliable" - Product Review by Brian Farley (Posted on 1/26/12)

Excellent!

Comments: In my opinion, these are and always have been the best pumps. They're quiet and last forever. I bought this 1400, because the Rio I currently have is 15 years old. It still works! I'm replacing it because I just cant believe it will continue to work and I just don't want to push my luck. I will be retiring it to the water change garbage can to circulate the water instead.

Other than some sparse periodic cleaning, I've done nothing to it. Never changed the impeller and its still makes less noise then the brand new Tunze I just bought. I needed better flow control like the Tunze has for more delicate flow adjustment. Although the Rio does have the ball valve attachment, the Tunze end dial more precise. I also have a 500, 600, 2-1700 in non critical roles, about as old. So far (knock on wood) Rio have never let me down.

"Start-Up Problem" - Product Review by Earl Ingalls (Posted on 1/5/12)
Rating
Great!

Comments: Product was installed in a small water fountian with no installation problems. When power was applied, the motor did not start. Removed it from the fountain, drained water from the device and applied power. Still did not start. Tapped the housing lightly and it started O.K. Re-installed pump in the fountain and it has been working fine for three days now. I did not dissassemble the pump, but suspect contamination in the rotor of the induction motor, impeller or in the bearings. The pump gives adequate flow into a head of twenty-four inches. Quality seems adequate at this early stage.

"This is the pump you want!" - Product Review by William Phillips Jr. (Posted on 12/12/11)

Great!

Comments: I ordered this pump to replace my old Maxi-Jet 1200 pump on my Aqua-C Remora protein skimmer. It is bulkier, but it is silent. The only noise you hear is the spray noise from the skimmer itself. I wish it was a little smaller, but I knew the size when I ordered it. The only issue I have is the mounting brackets that came with it are confusing, and I do not see any way to suction cup it to the side of the aquarium. It looks like you can only mount it from the bottom. It runs quiet and cool. What more can you ask for.

Comments: Had the pump running for a week now in the 30 gallon sump for my 90 gallon display tank with overflow. It pumps hard and is very quiet. Used 3/4 inch inner diameter PVC flex hose straight from outlet on Taam Rio 3100 to return bulkhead on display tank (no flow restrictors or extra connectors needed - very simple)

Comments: Took the advice of other reviewers and bought the Rio 1000 to power our new Remora protein skimmer. The set-up is so quiet that I occasionally panic that the power has gone off or something has stopped working. The whole set-up with the Remora and Rio 1000 has enabled us to get rid of the hang-on overflow/sump/protein skimmer/return spray bar mess and a hang-on box filter. The removal of all that clutter and the sweet silence is priceless!

Comments: I have a 280 gal. tank and a fish room with a frag tank. These pumps are excellent for many purposes, to empty a tank, ro/di, etc. They area hard, cheap and powerful.

I don't. recommend them for inside the aquarium. They produce heat and after a period the got clogged specially if you have them with a wave controller where they switch to an on off state frequently.

Comments: Hello,

I have been using Rio pumps/powerheads for 15 years now. They have been used everyway i could think of and have always performed well. Except... hook up to wave makers.
They are a very solid built product that moves a lot of water and at a good price. I just bought 2 - 3100s running them through 2 - 3/4" flow accelerators(another good product for the money). You have to listen really hard to hear a humm regarding this pumps sound.

Great!

Comments: Good pump for the money. Actually bought it as an exact replacement for a Corlalife Super Skimmer 65. Kind of disappointed that the original only lasted a little over a year. The orginal went out by the impeller getting stuck in position and the needle wheel not spinning. Pump still worked. Relatively quiet pump that comes with all the attachments as a powerhead setup. Only using the skimmer on this setup until sump/refugium is complete and then will move it to another tank.

"GREAT Pump;BAD Instructions" - Product Review by Tracy Roese (Posted on 9/20/10)
Rating
Great!

Comments: I guess I was a bit too novice for this but the instructions were either super pathetic or they just assumed expertise that I did not have. Turned out it was really simple to put together and install but you would not gather that from looking at the directions. It works well with my small Continuous Syphon Overflow, though I would not use it with anything bigger sincle it is on full blast and doesn't work the overflow to capacity. That could be due to some complications of that overflow so there's that, too. The little suction cups could be improved since they don't like to stick but other than that, it's great. No major complaints.

"RIO in outside fountain" - Product Review by Terry Bottom (Posted on 9/8/10)
Rating
Great!

Comments: RIO+2100 replaced a 2 year 2100 unit in a three level cascading outside fountain in NE Florida. Fountain is supplied with well water that is high in calcium so scale buildup is a real problem. The fountain is in bright light so algae growth is a big problem. The impeller shaft and bearing went out on the old unit, but considering the amount of solids that pass through the unit I considered the longevity to be acceptable. The unit is energy efficient and runs quietly and is affordable. A good buy.

Comments: I have had one of these for the last 9 years, and just recently the impeller wore out. So I was going to order a new impeller, but decided to just get a new pump. This is a work horse of a pump and is rated really good as far as head pressure and flow. For the same pressure and flow in a different pump you will have to pay alot more.I love these pumps, I have one on my return and one on my skimmer.

Comments: The Rio 50 might seem a little small at first, but it's size is key in it's applications. Works very well in small reef tanks and produces great flow to keep algae at bay. This pump is PERFECT for small pico and nano reef setups. Also This is a good pump to use for mixing small amounts of saltwater for smaller saltwater tanks. The price tag is excellent for such quality performance.

Comments: I used a new 2100 to run my Aqua Medic protien skimmer. It lasted two nights! There was a crack down the back, on the inside sealed part. This let water into the electronics and fried it. What a buy, two nights for $50! On to better pumps for sure. I could only imagine what this could of done to my fish when shorting out if is was in the display tank instead of the sump!

Comments: This was my first Rio pump and I'm not that impressed. This thing vibrates like crazy and the noise level is unacceptable for use anywhere you would be for more than 5 minutes. I used it for circulation in a 10 Gallon tank and couldn't get it to quiet down. I swapped it out for a Maxi-Jet that I was using to pump RODI water from a storage tank and the noise went away.

Comments: Great return pump, flow is a bit too focused for powerhead use, but it is a workhorse in terms of reliability, price and maintanence as a pickup or return pump.

Comments: I replaced a older little giant with the Rio+ 2100 and it works great so far. I am pushing water up 36" in a fountain. The ball valve accessory worked great to reduce flow. A great pump and great service, received the pump in just 3 days.....

Comments: I have to pile carbon bags ontop of this thing to keep it from vibrating all over my sump. It also sticks from time to time. pumps need to be cleaned but when this one sticks it's clean inside. I'm switching to a Mag 12 for better flow and no noise. The mag 12 i have now pumps water back into my 135g reef. It dosn't make a sound!!

Unsatisfactory

Comments: I was advised that this pump would work in freshwater to add aeration as well as some movement. It works fine as a powerhead to add movement, but the parts which accompany the pump do not operate as well as another power head I have to add air to the current to aerate the tank. After several false starts and a call to the help line, the pump will not operate as an aerator, it just puts water out of the tank through the air in line. I would not recommend this as an aerator.

Comments: Works fine, but heck of a noise. Loud deep humming, plus other clattering sometimes. May be because it is pushing up 40 inches of head from the sump/refugium. The noise makes me wonder if it will give out due to excess strain.

Comments: Well what can i say other than this pump rocks! I have a TRUVUU Mighty Max wet dry and finding a pump that was not too big was not easy. I tried several different ones but output was either too weak or too strong. This pump was a happy medium. Only down size is the lack of fittings for 1/2" pvc. None the less with a few adapter mods its the best out there.

Comments: I have been using the Rio water pumps in my water gardening business for 15 years. I refuse to use any other pump. They run for years and are easy to keep clean. My water gardens aren't always clean, but my rio pumps do not clog up with plant matter. I am trying to become a distributor in my area too!

Comments: My protein skimmer uses this model pump, and this is my third one. Each one seems to last 18 to 24 months. I'd switch to a different model, but the physical dimensions & specs are a fit for my skimmer. Hopefully this one will last longer- at least they're relatively cheap!
