Comments: So far my experience has been pretty much consistent with most of the reviews written in this forum. The DOC 9002 setup was simple, it took a couple days to break in, but after that I have been very pleased with it's performance. In addition it is by far the most quiet skimmer I have owned.

"Tunze 9002"
- Product Review by Matthew Snedecor
(Posted on 8/31/11)

Comments: First skimmer I have ever owned, so not much to compare it to. I have it in my sump so fit was no problem. Skimming on a system with a 17 gal display with a 25 gal sump. Initial quality seems very poor. The plastic that the square base is made of is paper thin and as cheap as you can get, for real. The collection cup is good quality plastic. The pump seems to be made nice and heavy. I did the modification with the air line and the skimmer is completely silent. I have to look for foam to make sure it is working. No microbubbles and nice foam after 24 hours, I would recommend to do the airline mod and you will be glad you purchased this skimmer. Nice dark skimmate on a tank that has just finished cycling with no livestock yet. Lets just hope the base of "thinnest plastic on earth" lasts, I will just pay attention and be careful with it during maintenance. Other than that, couldnt be happier.

"Excellent little skimmer"
- Product Review by Thad Moore

Comments: I have been using the tunze 9002 for about 3 years now. It is an excellent skimmer - a bit pricey, but- you get what you pay for. After the break in period, it is consistent! Best used with an ATO!!! very finicky about water level- once a set level is established- once a week cleaning is all that is required. The only other drawback to this skimmer is the pump. I have the older model skimmer and the pump is near impossible to find! The newer model uses the tunze silence pump- an excellent pump in itself! Unfortunately, the older skimmer can not be modded to use the newer skimmer pump. If or when my current pump fails, I will be buying the newer style without a question! Tunze builds excellent equipment!

"Tunze Rocks!"

Comments: This replacement skimmer is rockin in my reef tank. I purchased it to replace the stock skimmer that came with my Solana 34gl "All-in-1" system. With it's small foot print and VERY low noise level made it an excellent choice for my tank. Being able to control the amount of air infusion is an added feature that been a life saver, for my tank. What I saw in the waste cup is astonshing in comparison to what the stock skimmer pulled out. I'm totally thrilled with the overall performance of this skimmer and will surely recommend it to my fellow SW tankers.

"Just another skimmer"
- Product Review by Jason Selinger
(Posted on 6/19/11)
-
Comments: Pros: Very few microbubbles once it breaks in, which is not something you can say for its competitors (AquaC, etc). Skimmate is dark and the overall skimmer design is compact. It's actually QUIET!!
<br />
<br />Cons: Built of incredibly cheap plastic. As others have said the covers will fall off if you're not careful. My air tubing elbow keeps clogging with calcium buildup. Needs regular cleaning and adjustment to keep working.
<br />
<br />After a year of ownership, I would recommend this skimmer in this price range. The AquaC Remora will give you more consistent foam production, but it comes with the price of significant microbubble accumulation and noise. I got sick of having to clean and adjust the Tunze every week so I will probably try the Hydor SlimSkim next.
<br />
<br />You just cant win with these skimmers! I wish you could get the simplicity and build quality of the AquaC with the quietness and excellent foam production without microbubbles of the Tunze. It's a decent product overall.

"tunze nano 9002"
- Product Review by Jeff Saurwein
(Posted on 6/18/11)

Comments: This skimmer is a tad bit more difficult to place in the 34g solana than I had originally planned on. I had to purchase a modified collection cup for it which I knee about prior to purchase. I still had to get creative with its placement. The skimmer itself is cheaply made. The top section pops off easily. Another problem I noticed is tunze should of put far less slack in the airline tube. If the slack collects in the top half it kinks the tube and the skimmer doesn't work. The air adjustment is in a terrible spot to adjust when its in the false back of the solana. You also have to constantly stay on top of the water level or it won't pull anything. With all that said it's still a wonderful little skimmer and I'm rather pleased with it. It broke in quickly and is pulling darker skimmate than the stock skimmer ever did. It's extremely quiet and my living room is much for peaceful. I'm very happy with it.

Comments: I purchased this skimmer for a 28g JBJ nano. If you saw off the magnet, it's nearly a perfect fit in the center rear chamber. Skimmer took about 2 days to "break in" then works perfectly. Even during the break-in, it was silent.

<br />I would definitely purchase another.

"Not Sure What the Others see i"
- Product Review by Sam Rappaport
(Posted on 3/26/11)

Comments: I'm not sure what all the raves are about. Maybe it's a sign of the limited availability of a decent skimmer in this segment of the market. I've owned this skimmer for about a year. First it is a cheap piece of plastic construction that is overpriced. Someone is getting rich on this thing! My case broke towards the bottom where the slots are. it's very thin and when i was opening the bottom to clean it - it broke. Also the air knob is almost impossible to adjust. It's to deep to be able to conveniently reach it and when you do it is very difficult to turn. There is a great modification for this on you-tube. Overall for the money I would expect Tunze to make a better skimmer. The cheap stock skimmer that came with my Solana was much much better than the Tunze!
<br />I wish someone out there would come in with a decent product in this niche.

"Tunze Nano isn't."
- Product Review by Paul Polak
(Posted on 3/2/11)
-
Comments: It is my own fault for not visualizing this before, but the skimmer is way too big for my small tank. It should be placed in a sump or much larger tank behind structure so it isn't seen. That said, it is very quiet and resolved surface foam issues in 24 hours by removing a containerful of brown foam. Now the maintenance amount is reduced to 1/10th that rate but surface is clean again!

"Tunze 9002 Protein Skimmer"
- Product Review by Scott Bronk
(Posted on 1/20/11)

Comments: I own a JBJ 28 Gallon nanocube. This is my 3rd skimmer for it and by far the best! No micro-bubles after the skimmer breaks in. I can save you another $40.00 by not having to purchase the media basket(InTank)collection cup. Simply use a Dremel and shave off the back plastic trim on the inside of the middle overflow chamber where this skimmer fits. I also only had to use a razor blade and sharp knife to remove the magnet that must be removed from the skimmer housing prior to fitting the rear center chamber. Not too big of a deal! If you dont wish to shave the inside plastic trim of the tank off, I would buy a new collection cup on mediabaskets.com. Otherwise cutting the hood is your other option and I wouldn't suggest that w/ wires that are under the hood! This skimmer removes a good amount of broken down organic waste and so far is easy to use. The only other thing I would suggest is using some duct tape or Gorrilla tape to tape the top and bottom of the skimmer's detatcable pieces. The fit is so tight in the bottom chamber that it will pop off otherwise. Enjoy!

"Great Skimmer"
- Product Review by Vincent Novak
(Posted on 12/16/10)

Comments: I've used my Tunze Nano Skimmer for almost three years. I recently replaced the pump, but I have been more than pleased with its operation in my 24g JBJ NanoCube -- and it is the only one I've found that fits into the back compartment. So I took a chance but well worth it. Made a major difference. Easy to clean; easy to adjust; always working.
<br />
<br />However, for those that own a nano-cube-like tank with a hood/built-in lighting etc -- be prepared for major customization.

"good compact in tank skimmer"
- Product Review by Michael Atwell
(Posted on 12/4/10)

Comments: This is about the best designed in tank skimmer I've seen. I don't have a sump and have no room on the back of the tank. I didn't have a lot of options so I went with 2 of these. They are reliable, quiet, very few bubbles in the tank, and the black box blends in well in the tank. I've had two of them running over a year now. I have no issue with the parts. Coraline algae is making the plastic thicker anyway. It's not like its going to wear out. I don't have any issues with the covers staying on either.

Comments: It may not appear to be the best construction but it skims great. Mine was pulling in less than a day so break in is super quick. Fits in the back of an aquapod 24 with no hood. Spend the money and get this quality little skimmer instead on something far less effective for cheap.

Comments: I have owned a Remora, and ASM skimmer both great skimmers. I was surprised at how quiet the Tunze operated. It is hard to tell that it is running. All skimmers need an adjustment period. This one was producing skimmate after about 24 hours. After a few days it is producing nicely. I am using it in a seperate refuguim for a biocube 29 HQI. I would give it a five if the top and bottom caps were made to fit better and the instructions are lacking.

Comments: The skimmer works as advertised once you break it in. It was REALLY noisy for me at first, but after a few days it is dead silent :). The skimmer took about 2 and a half days to break in with the steviet collection cup, but it works perfectly now. If you are going to run this on your jbj 28 , then be prepared to spend extra money on the steviet cup and make some modifications to your rear sump. IMHO it is to tight of a fit to try and force in, so you will have to cut the silicone on one of the baffles to give you wiggle room. I also had to cut a notch in the rear brace.... all is good now :)

"Definitelt not for Nanocube 28"
- Product Review by Kwok Cheung
(Posted on 5/28/10)

Comments: If you have an JBJ Nanocube 28 like me, be prepared to make some major modifications!!! 1. Get a saw to saw off the attached magnet (carefully not to break or crack the skimmer body because it's very likely you will do so) 2. The foam cup will not go into the skimmer at all unless you cut the back lid of the tank, or saw 50% of your cup to make it fit. Or you can buy the "Skinny Tunze Cup" from Intank online which is always in backordered (so buy the cup before you buy the skimmer), but that's another $40 to spend.

"Worst skimmer ever!"
- Product Review by Javier Hinojos
(Posted on 5/5/10)
-
Comments: Out of all the skimmers I have owned this is the worst one. This skimmer appears to have been designed by mentally challenged monkeys that were using materials selected by accountants. I am throughougly disappointed by this mass produced garbage. The top plate and bottom plate of the "box" section of the skimmer fall off very easily, I had to tie a string around the assembly to get it to stay in place. The design flaws on this skimmer are glaring and horrible. Bottom line, this is German made garbage, I will never buy another Tunze product again.
<br />
<br />Lesson learned, don't make the same mistake I did.

Comments: Great skimmer and is working well in my JBJ 28. I see only two problems with this skimmer. The first one is that they are extremely sensitive to water levels and the second is the magnet that is attached to the side had to be sawed off in order to fit in my JBJ (GET RID of the MAGNET TUNZE, or make it something you add after the fact, not factory glued on).

"Fit in my NC24"
- Product Review by Travis Hill
(Posted on 10/19/09)

Comments: This is a great little skimmer, I bought it for my nanocube 24. It's a ton better than my Prism skimmer. if it does overflow it goes back into the tank rather than allover the floor with the HOB Style prism. It only took 24 hrs to break in and get nice creamy foam. It's easy to adjust, get it in the sweet spot, 3 turns past fully closed with water level about 1/2 from line, then make very small , 1/4 turn or less, adjustments to get it where u want it. Mine skims best a little wet, I get 100-150ml tea colored skim per day, with 6 small fish. The build quality isn't the best for tunze, it's made of cheap extruded plastic, but it is basically ment to be put in AOI tanks, in a back compartment where u can't really break it. How ever for $125 you can get a sapphire skimmer that is cast acrylic & uses itialian sicce pumps....still a very good skimmer!

"Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer"
- Product Review by Daniel Turley
(Posted on 7/1/09)
-
Comments: The skimmer works great. It pulled more skimmate in two days than my previous skimmer did in two months. Creates a nice dry foam that pulls very dark gunk out of the tank and I only have a small clownfish and pygmy anglel fish. The skimmer is fairly quiet and can be run in a bedroom with minimal disturbance. I run this skimmer in the Jbj nanocube 28 gallon. It just fits in the center chamber. You do however, have to cut the magnet off in order for it to fit and buy a custom collection cup from mediabaskets.com in order to use it without having to modify the lid of the tank. After running it for a week I have noticed that the water quality is a bit better, having less particulate matter floating in the water column.

"10 STARS!!"
- Product Review by Aaron Mullins
(Posted on 5/1/09)

Comments: Tunze skimmers are the best bet for reliability, low wattage, and unbelievable performance! This is my second Tunze skimmer. The first one is an amazingly 14 year old Classic and is still going STRONG!! I just had 3 adult T.Crocea clams spawn in a 29gal. nano and the stock skimmer was a joke under this load. After break-in period (4hours) and over night the water is clearer than the six 50% water changes done over three days! Super quiet and very easy to dial in skimmate for desired results. Forget the rest go with the BEST! This is not just a box with a pump, it incorporates a lot of hydro-dynamics for maximum performance and contact time. This product really should have 10 stars.

Comments: Given my experience with other "nano" skimmers on the market (I routinely perform saltwater aquarium maintenance on several aquariums in my area), I've found the Tunze 9002 to outperform all other nano skimmers in its class. Though it is relatively expensive compared to these other models, I feel any reef enthusiast should seriously consider it. It is compact, easy to adjust, simple, and efficient for its size. A great skimmer for aquapods, biocubes, nanocubes, etc.

My other stuff is getting moved soon and then the skimmer is going to have to work overtime.

Comments: I use this on my JBJ HQI 28g. I had to cut in to the aquarium hood and I had to remove the magnet that was molded on to the skimmer to get it to work. I have it in the center chamber, which means the filtration normally stored there has been moved. However, I just have to say that this works perfectly and is very quiet! It's very powerful and should last a long time.

Comments: I think this skimmer could be manufactured better. It is pretty flimsy black plastic and seems pretty cheap. The top does not stay on the skimmer well. The internal air tube has to be adjusted to keep the top on. I would have expected better for $152. Regardless, it still skims very well, even with rubber bands holding the top on.

"Great skimmer"
- Product Review by Tom Ribero

Comments: I purchased this skimmer to replace the nearly useless one that came with my Red Sea Max. It's very quiet, works very well, and since it's only one quarter of the size of the Red Sea skimmer, I now have room for a refugium.

"Attention RSM Owners"
- Product Review by Andrew Wright

Comments: I have a Red Sea Max and the skimmer it came with didnt seem to be doing the job that i wanted done, so i purchased this bad boy and i was shocked at the difference. The Tunze pulled more skim in a day than the RSM stock skimmer did in a week and the water clarity was crystal clear. And the best part NO MORE MICRO BUBBLES which should make any RSM owner very happy. The Tunze DOC 9002 was very easy to install and very easy to clean. But to all RSM owners you will have to keep the back lid open for the collection cup sticks out about a inch to far, i just took off the rear lid all together. Haveing no more Micro bubbles in my tank was enouph for me to rate this 10 Stars haha goodluck and have fun with it.

Comments: The Tunze Nano skimmer works great! I bought it for my seahorse fry setup. It takesa day or so to get started but then it cranked up and skims out the crud! I recommend it! It has a nice small footprint too! The magnet holder works great! Easy to clean for once! I would definately buy one again.

Comments: I've been running Tunze's Nano DOC Skimmer for two years now. The first year of which I had it running in-tank in the back of a 10g nano. There it took up little room and never did it release micro-bubbles back into the tank. Now I have it sitting in a 10g sump of my 15g high seahorse tank. It's small design made it especially perfect to fit into the baffled sump. It is VERY quiet, especially with regards to my ASM and Bak-Pak skimmers. Plus, it has consistantly been pulling dark foam from my tanks for two years solid. It also happens to very easy to clean. I did find upon setup that the included instructions were a bit unclear, but the parts were all there and were easy to assemble. Other than that, despite the high performance quality I have to say that the materials do feal a bit cheap for Tunze. Reguardless, now I'm looking at one of their larger models for another upcoming tank of mine. Good stuff, I'll stand by them.

Comments: The Tunze Nano 9002 protein skimmer works perfectly. I replaced the Red sea max skimmer with this product and since it has been installed it has pulled a ton of junk out of the water. The skimmate it pulls out is watery sometimes and fills up the cup in just one day. If you are looking for a skimmer to replace the one in the Red Sea Max this is it. Awesome produst.

"Great Nano Skimmer"
- Product Review by Gordon Chen
(Posted on 6/16/08)

Comments: I have used this skimmer for 2 weeks now. It took about 1 week to break in. It makes great foam. I have a Aqua C Remora before this and I have replaced it for this 9002 mainly because I have changed a new tank and there's no room in the back to hang the remora nano. IMO, remora is louder (even with mods), has minor micro bubbles, produce less foam but it has better build/material quality. 9002 has great foam, no micro bubbles but the material can be imporved. I would pick this 9002 over remora nano if I have the space in sump or tank.

"Tunze Nano DOC Skimmer"
- Product Review by Jason Glazer
(Posted on 6/9/08)

Comments: This skimmer does fit in the rear sump of the Current 24 gallon AquaPod aquariums with the HQI lamp. If you have a florescent hood then I don't believe it will fit. Tunze indicates the unit may need 1 day to establish skimming. Mine didn't start after 3 days so I eventually force feed it air by pluging off the inside hole that is exposed if you remove the collection cup/tube with tape. Then feed an airline into the hole where the adjustment screw is. Used a valve to control airflow. Eventually it started sucking air on its own and I removed the plug and airline after a few days. It does produce a fair amount of green/brown skimmate if properly adjusted. Overall I am very pleased with its function and design. I don't think it is very loud but if your sleeping in the same room it may be bothersome. One benefit to force feeding it with air was that it was quieter (i.e. no gurgling or vacuum hiss on the intake).

"Great but takes a little while"
- Product Review by Rebecca Cortese
(Posted on 5/28/08)

Comments: I bought this skimmmer to put in my sump for my 29 gallon tank. For the first couple days, it was only pulling in water and very quickly, which is expected for a new protein skimmer. After several days, though, it was skimming some dark murky stuff - thick and wet. Overall, it's a good skimmer and does the job. It takes a little bit of tweeking (which is to be expected) but is worth the money.

"Squeaze.."
- Product Review by Lee Nicholls
(Posted on 5/25/08)
-
Comments: I have a BC29, many of the reviews have said the Tunze 9002 is a good fit for the second chamber.. it does fit, so that's at least true, but it's a tight squeaze and the canopy won't sit properly on afterwards due to the 9002's large collection cup.
<br />
<br />Aesthetics aside this thing is working great. It replaced my Oceanic skimmer made for the tank, the oceanic one obviously wasn't doing it's job very well.. within a few days the 9002 has accumulated brown mess nicely in the cup.
<br />
<br />Installation was easy, shipping quality was very high, the power cable is very small, so be warned you might need an extension lead for any "tall" tanks, it's hard to make a drip loop with it..

"Awesome"

Comments: This skimmer is AWESOME. It really works great. I had a hard time with it initially, only because the the 90deg elbow that runs the vent tube to the pump for aerating was not pushed in all the way so I had poor bubble production. After pushing it in a bit more it took off. I definitely recommend this product to anyone who has a Nano or Aquapod. I have the Aquapod and yes if your using the foam filter you will need to trim it but I'm running a canister filter so no problem there. You won't regret this purchase!

Comments: I replaced the stock skimmer in my Red Sea Max with this skimmer. It is about 1/4 the size of the stock skimmer, it doesn't produce the micro bubbles as the stock skimmer, it producing more skimmates, and it runs quieter. I recommend this skimmer as a replaced to the stock skimmer in the Red Sea Max.

Comments: I have this Skimmer in a 10 gallon FOWLR. the tank is in my room with me and i purchased this skimmer based on how quiet it was said to be. this unit is very quiet! the only noise this makes is a soft bubbling sound, and i still sleep great. One word of caution, the unit is bigger than it appears in the photos. the collection cup is a little bigger than a 12oz soda can.

Comments: I thought I would give this Skimmer a try sense my other tunze products work great. No suprise here this skimmer is great. I placed this simmer on a 20gl tank with 2 clowns that are heavely feed. The skimmer pulls out a good amount of gunk, pretty quite and yes small size. I would recomdend this skimmer to any of my friends that had a size tank that this is for.

Comments: Extremely satisfied with the 9002. I retrofitted my JBJ 24g and slid it into the first chamber. It has been running now for a month. Very effective. Saw the results within one hour after installation. Easy setup. Easy to remove the cup for cleaning. The best thing I could have done for my tank.

"DOES NOT FIT 24G AQUAPOD!"
- Product Review by Victor Brienza
(Posted on 2/12/08)
-
Comments: I purchased this product after reading some of the other reviews which stated that it fit in the overflow compartment of the 24 gal. Aquapod. However, this is extremely misleading. Yes, it most likely fits in the HQI Aquapod models with the open top, however, it DOES NOT! fit the Aquapods with power compacts and a closed lid. Also, even on the HQI units some modifications are neccesary for the skimmer to fit (the filter sponges must certainly be trimmed a great deal, etc.)It was a very rude awakening for me when I brought it home, so don't make the same mistake and be wary of reviews.
<br />As for the operation of the product, i can't say much as I was never able to see it functioning. However it appears to be a well built machine and I am sure it works well (if it fits).

"Nano?"
- Product Review by William Fraser
(Posted on 2/5/08)
-
Comments: The Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer 9002 works well, however, please be aware that the dimensions listed are for the submersible part of the unit and do not include the collection cup. This unit will NOT fit in the sump of a JBJ Nano Cube 24g without modification to the tank's lid due to the diameter and elevation of the collection cup. I did extensive research before selecting this unit and had I know the true dimensions I would have chosen another make and model.

"Good Skimmer"
- Product Review by Steve Killebrew
(Posted on 1/21/08)
-
Comments: I have a 24 gallon Aquapod (halide light) and bought this skimmer because of reviews I've read and its small size. It fits nicely into the right side (blue sponge side) of the tank. The skimmer is so quiet that you barely notice it running.
<br />
<br />
<br />I trimmed the Aquapod's sponge down to about 1/2 inch and am still able to squeeze the sponge between the skimmer and the Aquapod's false back. The first 3 days produced very little skimmate. The skimmer has been running 10 days now and produces a dark tea color skimmate. In my opinion this is a great skimmer, especially considering the price.

"Glass canopy has to go"
- Product Review by Alexander Alas
(Posted on 1/15/08)
-
Comments: Decided to try out a Tunze since I have heard they worked very well. The mounting instructions are kind of tricky, but one should be able to figure out how to get it mounted. The skimmer is designed for tanks without a full glass cover as it protrudes a bit in my 29gal tank, and the cup will take up room on top pushing my lights to a more forward location. The skimmer itself works great, pulling some thick crud from the tank. I may not have it set correctly because a thick covering tends to coat the sides of the collection cup before it is filled making me clean it prematurly. It is pulling a lot of stuff from the water none the less. It is dead silent, and I have not seen any bubbles. I give it 5 stars on just the amount of gunk it removes and its quiet and easy running. I rate it at 4 due to the tricky mounting instructions, and having to remove half of my glass top. It is definatly better than my old Redsea berlin model skimmer.

Comments: I have the Tunze Nano DOC Protein Skimmer 9002 setup on my 29 gallon JBJ Nano Cube HQI SPS Reef Aquarium and its results are amazing. The Protein Skimmer runs ultra quite and produces a fine mist of bubble that in two days has managed to remove some very dark brown waste from my Aquarium water. Also cleaning the collection cup is simple no twist and fighting against solidified salt to remove the cup it just pulls out easily. Best of all NO MICRO-BUBBLES returned into the Aquarium.

Comments: This is a very good unit, once the break in period was done it started pulling skimmate so dark out of my system that I was extremely impressed.
<br />
<br />Nice and compact and it does fit in the right rear compartment (overflow area) of my 24g aquapod so if you are looking for a great nano skimmer at a great price and one that fits in your rear chambers of the aquapod this is the one. The only thing that kept it from getting a perfect score from me were the mounting bracket instructions and construction could have been easier to read and easier to do.
