Excellent!

Comments: What can I say? It's well made, cheap, and definitely looks superior to any DIY I could ever make. This is my second one, this time for GFO. I can buy a lot of these and still be happier about it, i.e. for GFO, carbon, bio pellets, zeo, matrix or de-nitrate, etc. Not so sure about Purigen though, which is like fine sand. It will probably just go through the sponge and into your tank.

Excellent!

Comments: So I bought the Phosban 550 bec I have a 300g reef system.
It is a nice product and I assume it will help lower my NO3 and PO4 quite a bit. I am using Carbon and GFO. I will make one recommendation. I used a little 40gph pump and it wouldnt do squat for the 550. I use a MaxiJet 1200 and it works like a charm. The turned the valve wide open for the carbon but I used the valve on the GFO to tumble the media as desired. It is important not to grind the GFO as particles will be released back into the water column. Great product. Looking forward to the results.

Great!

Comments: This is a good product, espcially for the price! I used rowaphos in this reactor and is very easy to use. The ball valve that comes along with this is handy, just keep in mind that you need to purchase your own hose and pump. Using a Maxijet 400 and is perfect for it. Read the instructions, make sure you fully open the valve at least once a week. As far quality of parts, I've had this for only two weeks, and not nearly long enough to really give a detailed review.

Great!

Comments: It is simple to use, easy to connect, had everything to get start other then pump and yes it does show improvement on my saltwater reef tank. I normally have algae build up on my glass and have to clean it everyday. Since I have the phosban reactor on for three days I didn't have to clean my glass anymore .

Excellent!

Comments: This is a review of the reactor not it's effects. It is built nicely does not have all the tubing you need to get started so don't forget to have some 1/2 in tubing and a pump. A note for the pump, be careful not to have too strong a pump or you will be using the ball valve included and causing the pump to create excess noise. Research your needed flow for your type of media you are using for this reactor.

Comments: Truly a life saver. I have two of them in my 90g reef - one with carbon and one with GFO. They're small enough to fit almost anywhere and work flawlessly. The price is great; you get way more than what you pay for here. Fully satisfied. Thank you TLF for this great product!

Comments: The unit came with most of the parts needed to operate except tubing, clamps and water pump. After assembling and installing on the outside of the sump I noticed that the base had a small leak where the acrylic meets the plastic base. After sealing the unit with silicone on the interior and exterior and allowing to dry - I was worried about the leak so I installed the unit in the sump. Good thing that I did because the unit is still leaking. For $60.00 it is not built to hold up to 1000 gpm water flow but it should be able to hold water with a 200 gpm power head. DON'T TRUST THE SEALS!

"550 reactor." - Product Review by Agustin Villegas (Posted on 4/2/11)

Excellent!

Comments: I have four Phoban Reactors two 150's & two 550's I'm using ROWAphos media in both 150 reactors in two of my fragging tanks, & running both 550's in my main tank. I have one with the ROWAphos media & one with the NPX BioPlastics, & they both work perfectly, if anyone out there is planing on getting the 550 reactor with the BioPlastics I suggest you get at least a 400GPH pump in order to ensure you have proper media tumbling. At first I had a MaxiJet 1200 for the 550 reactor with the NPX media & it was berly enough to tumble the media. So if any one out the is planing on using this product with the NPX media make sure you have or get a pump rated for at least 400GPH. Also make sure you wash the pellets very well with water before putting the reactor into service it will prevent the media from clumping which is very bad & start of by only using about 25% of recomended media for volume of water in tank then slowly add 25% about every week or two weeks (depending on bio load) it will prevent the water from clouding up & looking like milk. One last thing all my Phosphates & Nitrates are undetectable.

"Phosban 550" - Product Review by Gary Faulkner (Posted on 3/31/11)
Rating
Excellent!

Comments: I really like the 550. I was running 2 of the Phosban 150s and they just didn't have enough capacity for my 400 gallon system. With the 550 I can run enough GFO for my larger system. Once I get the P04 where I want it I'm going to convert the 550 to a pellet reactor. It has a cone shaped bottom and you can chose the output and input on the cap of the reactor. The 550 is a good reactor for GFO, carbon or as a pellet reactor.

Comments: I bought this for a pellet reactor. It is working fine for this but I had to get what I believe is quite a large pump (Quiet One 2200) to get the pellets rolling. It is a good average unit cheaply made IMHO but it is somewhat cheap in cost also. "Get what you pay for".

Unsatisfactory

Comments: Thought I would save a few bucks and buy this.... BAD IDEA!
After receiving my new reactor, a NextReef MR1 I realized just how much that extra $10.00 bucks really gets you. I wouldnt GIVE this TLF reactor to a fellow hobbyist, it is now a pencil holder.
If you buy this over the NextReef product just be ready to deal with leaks and spending more money.

Great!

Comments: This is my second reactor. I am currently using this one so I can run GFO. I honestly think it is a little more than needed for my size system (240g + 75g sump). IMHO I believe the 150 would be more than large enough. The reactor did bring my levels down my phosphates to almost zero in a matter of hours though.

I also use the same model reactor with Vertex Bio-pellets about 1000 ml. I had to get a larger pump and add screen netting over the top and bottom of the reactor. I also used a larger pump than a 400 or 1200 Maxjet that is recommended.

Excellent!

Comments: This is a great reactor for many things. Of course it works well for Phosban, but I fill it with Seachem Denitrate and it works great for nitrate removal. You might consider some biopellets for even better results.
The combination of Denitrate, biopellets and this reactor makes a great denitrification system.

"Great Reactor!" - Product Review by Joseph Fernandez (Posted on 8/31/10)

Excellent!

Comments: I bought 3 of these reactors (150 model) to battle a green hair algae problem. I was overfeeding so my fault but now I need to stop this algae quick before it overflows out of my tank and turns my neighborhood into the swamps! One is running Hydrocarbon2, the other is running Phosban, and the third is running RowaPhos. The Rio+ 800 Pump is perfect for these reactors. No leaks at all but I used 1/2 inch plactic clamps on all connections to be safe. After 2 weeks the green hair algae has started to die. No negative impact on any of my livestock or PH level. Hopefully in a few months (or sooner) it will all be gone. Be careful to make sure no media is in the way as you screw on the cap otherwise it may not seal properly. I have a 120 gallon tank. I'm the type of person that is willing to spend more for better quality. I feel these reactors are built with quality materials.

Great!

Comments: very well built, for carbon or GFO (or both, just put the GFO at the bottom). comes with all the plumbing connections, big plus. it isn't built like a tank, but gets the job done VERY well, especially for the price. unless you have a long distance to pump, stick with a smaller maxi-jet pump, you'll want slower speeds for longer contact time and the pump can start to vibrate if you throttle it back too much with the included valve.

"love it" - Product Review by David Ainsworth (Posted on 4/21/10)

Excellent!

Comments: I love the extra space in this model reactor. It allows me to use as much or as little media as I need. The connctions seem a little flimsy, but after hooking it up and seeing if it leaks...turns out those connections are quite strong...even after wiggleing them around while the unit is in use. NO LEAKS.

My only gripe is that I am using a Maxjet 1200...and it doesn't seem like enough pump to get the media I'm useing to move around much...but it sill new...so maybe it will all break in in another week.

Great!

Comments: This is a decent unit considering the very reasonable price. It functions well and very easy to setup and get going. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five is that it's not the most solidly built unit. True, it won't take much abuse in my 100G sump but still, there has to be at least one reason why you might spend 2-3 times more for another unit.

Excellent!

Comments: As far as reactors go.....this one takes the cake! Nothing fancy...and that's the best part! I've used several other brands, the Aqua C XP Plus being the worst, and they all lack features that this one excels at. the fittings are all perfect, no fiddling around so the media doesn't fall into the tubing, ect. Plan and simple! I just put the media in and connected everything....works like it should! I'm running Rowaphos in the 150 w/ a Mj600 and ESV carbon in the 550 w/ a Mj1200. If you need a larger capacity go for the 550. Don't waste your money on anythings else!

Comments: This unit was super easy to setup and is working perfectly.

Pros- size, fittings, and cost.
Cons- No indication on pump needs.( I used a magdrive 190 worked perfect), also directions were wrong as far as input/output you need to have the water flow up from the bottom for best results. these were minor

Using unit for activated charcoal in a reef tank. When using a 660gph pump for testing the flow did not look as if it increased any so I stuck with the 190gph.

Comments: I have a single TLF Reactor running 500mL of carbon w/ a Maxi-jet 900 on a 150g African Cichlid tank. It has certainly been sufficient enough to keep the water clear and the levels down thus far. I had read that several others here have had problems with leakage around the seals and joints. I instead reinforced each tubing connection with large zip-ties and have not seen a single leak yet. Great product, easy to install, easy to service, no more filter bags!

Comments: I actually own both this one by Two Little Fishies and the one made by Kent called the nautilus phos reactor and I prefer this one. The screw on lid makes changing media easier. Be careful though because if you have the pump running and try to adjust the unit or accidently bump it you can pop off one the hoses and make a mess like me.
One thing to keep in mind is that if you have a phosphate problem, you can not just hook this thing up and expect your problem to go away over night. By this time, the phosphates have leached their way into your rock and sand. You will need to use more than usual amounts of media and change as soon as exausted to get phosphates in check. Test water exiting reactor to know when to replace media.

After reading, I am using ROWAphos, which is a Granular Ferric Oxide (GFO). It has a much higher capacity than other medias and will not release harmful metals such as aluminum into the water or anything for that matter. There are a few different brands to go with and after reading some comparisons, I just got more confused. So pick one a try it and don't get cought up on prices!

Another problem are test kits! It is very difficult to find a kit that measures low enough to track this problem. If the phosphates are in the roch and sand it wont even recognize it. To get a good kit capable of measuring down to the levels to erradicate problems, it will cost you an arm and half a leg!!! Do some more research.

Initial setup was really easy and I was reading trying to figure if I should flush the media prior to use to get rid of the tiny particles. Even though they will not harm anything (corals, fish, ect.), it clouds the water something awful and will leave a coating on everthing in your tank. Your should run a couple gallons of ro water through and discard.

Due to the size of the reactor, you only need a small pump to run this. I got a mini-jet 404, does the job and fits anywhere!!! Cheap too!

Great alternative to huge, expensive reactors. But remember, this is not a set it and forget it type device. You need to stay on top of it or it is just another waste of your hard earned money and time.

Excellent!

Comments: I just installed this product with phosban on my 46 gallon mixed reef yesterday. Po4 was reading ~1.0ppm and this morning read 0.03ppm. If the directions are followed it seems to work very well and I don't have leaks...even without clamps. I am using a maxi-jet 400 and it works great. I am thinking of purchasing another one just for carbon on my other tank. Great filter for the price.

Great!

Comments: Works great, but I did not use the flexable 90 degree
connectors. I connected the tubing strait to the Phosban reactor and secured the tubing with stainless steel clamps. It leaked with the flexable 90 degree connectors.

Comments: I set up a bank of 3 of these on my reef tank, for Phosban, Carbon, and an "auxillary." They work great no matter what media I put in them. Sharp looking product, and easy to get into and maintain.

Unsatisfactory

Comments: difficult to keep media circulating, even with dedicated maxijet pump. as a result significant drop in efficacy after a couple of days of usage, media blocks water paasage even when mixing with carbon, do not recommend.

Comments: Performs well and does the job at a good price, and compact, too. My only complaint is that it's a bit tricky to get the o-ring to seal. I've learned to put a little olive oil on it before I crank it down. Also, make certain that the threads are totally clear of media.
